    @krzyzanowskim try again in 18 months. It’s still an infant.

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @krzyzanowskim April I think yeah, but I’m more talking about capability than knowledge. It would have done a better job of the Swift if it was able to describe that image better and that will come eventually.

    Regarding Swift specifically I find it doesn’t do as well as other languages like JavaScript or python. I suspect that while the knowledge is available there’s more content weighted towards other languages so it just learns those better.

    Question for folks out there who use "high contrast" mode on iOS

    ... if an app is AAA accessibility compliant, does that negate the need for high contrast mode?

    Or another way of asking, if an app doesn't support high contrast mode explicitly but is AAA compliant, is it still usable for you?

    The Weather Lock Screen widget is returning a broken symbol for me, and I think(?) I might actually know what specific bug this is?

    WeatherKit returns "snow" as the SFSymbol for snowy conditions, which isn't a valid symbol. It's "snowflake." I had to write an if check for this exact problem in a little WeatherKit app I've been tinkering with.

    @michaelsteeber why bother with the interpolation though, why not just hardcode it at that point?

    Sure they would - they’d max out at about 3.5G. No worse than a roller coaster.

    If you work at a company which has fully-remote employees, just how "full" is the "fully remote”?

    I.e., are folks still required to show up in person for interviews and/or periodic onsite/offsite gatherings? [poll]

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @bitprophet we have an annual all hands retreat and an annual functional team retreat and then subsidised additional retreats as needed / desired but all optional since covid and that’s unlikely to change.

    Data mining-based machine is indeed a nightmare, but for a lot of stuff sometimes we just have to pick our poison. But recently I've seen that has also started offering this service as one of their instant answers functions.

    I have no idea what backend they are using and how privacy-friendly it is. What do you think about it? Would you use it over, say, googletranslate or would you rather use something else?

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @kzimmermann there’s a learn more link on each translation takes you here https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/results/translation/

    The key thing is though for any instant answer that uses an alternative provider we always proxy it in a way that protects the privacy of the user.

    How often do you think about the Roman Empire?

    @daniel what prompted this? I just went to TikTok and a video about it popped up 🥴

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @daniel yeah the video I just saw was like “toxic masculinity and fascism walk hand in hand down the beach fetishing the Roman Empire and WW2” 😂

    I do think about it occasionally but we leave near Roman ruins so … it’s kinda hard not to when you see signs for the “Antonine wall” and such. Americas don’t have that excuse though

    Push notifications are coming along, we’re going with a similar approach as Mastodon meaning 3rd party apps that support Masto push notifications will work with @pixelfed

    I’m working on my own APNS/GCM gateway too, using async php so it will be easy to deploy, though only app devs need to run this. I will run a community gateway for the official apps, along with a separate one for my own instances

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @dansup @pixelfed surely that exists already? Seems mad for it not to.

    We were supposed to be moving into a new build but it’s been taking so long (and still hasn’t even started) that there’s no chance it will be ready before the contract termination date so we decide to start looking around for something else.

    We found an amazing place near Falkirk that is super handy for hospital (Cheryl needs it more and more because of her MS), train and motorway. We put in an offer and it was accepted.

    So I guess we’re moving house. 🎉

    Every single ‘software engineer’ I know who has ever over-valued their own work over blue collar work has, without fail, turned out to be MAGAs or incels. They tend to be the people who have their self worth wrapped up in their compensation and status, and are quick to anger when transit workers or delivery drivers, who work long hours in ways that are taxing in every way, break their narrative for themselves

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @skinnylatte I thank the machine god every day for the fact I earn a lot and don’t have to drive hundreds of miles or lift heavy things to make money. Definitely think physically harder work needs equal or even better pay tbh.

    From the whole world of programmers I encounter, JavaScript programmers probably hate each other the most. The cathedral-scale pile of abstraction and convoluted tools makes even Java programmers look like rookies.

    brindy,
    @brindy@mastodon.scot avatar

    @krzyzanowskim funny, I was saying the same to a colleague just the other day when we checked out a JS module our app depends on and ran npm install to see 400 dependencies and an unfathomable dependency graph. I used to do JS stuff 20 years ago, it was never that painful.

    And that, my friends, has to be the worst episode I’ve ever seen.

    I was done with that shit once Buffy did it, and I enjoyed it, but no one wanted more, and certainly not in Star Trek.
