Mid-life “crisis”: as emphatically not-a-car-guy, I am possessed of a desire to build a car. This is facially absurd. I don’t possess the necessary skills, don’t have a garage to store a partially-constructed vehicle, and definitely don’t have the time or funds to spend on such a venture.
I’m not building a fiberglass facsimile of an ‘89 MR2. But I kinda want to. Maybe make the lines just a touch sharper - and the cabin a touch bigger to accommodate my height better…
No. Silly. Frivolous. Nope.

@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

There’s also an ad I saw in a magazine in the mid-90’s for a kit car and it was black with all the lines of the car (80’s styling, it had edges) were traced with thin lines. I thought it looked very cool.
Did I mention that I definitely can’t sand or paint? I have absolutely none of the required skills for this.

@scudderfish oh, I watched a video about making fiberglass car bodies. It looks like an insane amount of work - although I could probably make if less work because my desired shape includes a lot of planes and fewer swooping curves.

"zeitgeist" can be translated as "time ghost". when people talk about putting something aside "for the time being", that's what they mean.

There's a trilogy by Alastair Reynolds with the slightly clunky name of "The Prefect Dreyfus Emergencies". The books are named Aurora Rising, Elysium Fire, & Machine Vendetta. Oddly, the Toronto public library has only the second two, not the first, in its ebook app.

I think I've managed to convince myself this is because there's an unrelated book from a decade later named "Aurora Rising". I think some person or program convinced themselves they were the same book, so they didn't need both.

Writing a thread on onboarding here, because I don't want to write it in the other place.

Context:
Good engineer onboarding is DEI. Teams that have great onboarding, tend to be more diverse and inclusive. Teams that have poor onboarding, tend to be more homogeneous and less diverse.

That's because poor onboarding makes life harder for junior employees and remote employees. Underrepresented groups benefit disproportionately from remote work options. Junior employees are a more diverse group.

@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke You may have questions about pattern buffers and I must stress that we do not have time for an in-depth discussion of safety protocols, the ethics of transporter-clones, or any twin paradoxes in this session.

Is it time to ditch shared libraries? Static linked executables only?

To recap, shared libraries were invented because exes were large and storage space was small. When I was developing pbmplus, static exes for all the programs would have taken up literally half my disk. Unfortunately, vendors didn't settle on a standard for building and using shared libraries, so they were a portability mess.

Today, storage space is plentiful but the portability mess remains. How about we get rid of it?

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@not2b it can cut both ways, and which way it cuts is related in my mind to the release cadence. I wouldn’t want to be a Linux distro maintainer trying to wrangle all the package updates if we blanket switched to static linking.
