Editing an interview, and it just hit me that "abortion bounty hunter law" is a real thing. The people who shamed everyone over the Supreme Court in 2016 were right as hell.

It's exceedingly hard to write good cryptography.

It's even harder to make it usable for its intended use case.

It's even harder to make it fit a wide range of use cases and threat models. (Do you care about metadata resistance? Cwtch is better than Signal for that.)

This is not a space you can just meander into and give it a good college try. You have to be deliberate, meticulous, and highly self-critical to succeed.

Apple apologizes for iPad ad

“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” said Tor Myhren, the company’s VP of marketing communications. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

Interestingly, Google used the same language to conclude its apology for its generative AI’s historical depictions of race. It explained its intention with flowery language and then said “But it’s missing the mark here”.

I wonder if we’ll be seeing more of this type of response to corporate tone-deafness (a generous term) going forward. Big “I’m sorry you feel that way (but this isn’t indicative of any problems with me)” vibes.

@Seirdy@pleroma.envs.net avatar

bangs head on wall

The problem isn’t that people didn’t like something you did. the problem you need to address is why they didn’t like it.

Corporate apologies like this prove that they observed people unhappy about something. It reads like an apology to investors for making people unhappy, not an apology to the people who got angry. It would be ten times better to say nothing at all.

Why do PR departments keep doing this? Do they think statements like these work better than actual apologies?

Now there is a similar weaponisation of these topics… to create friction & conflict & division where it needn’t be. It’s just about people being themselves. You don’t need to be bothered about it. F**k off & let people be”

I was very eager to make the whole Kotlin/js thing work, but this project suffers from what a lot of these niche projects do:

  1. Early adopters published example projects 4 years ago
  2. The project itself doesn’t seem to maintain their own examples
  3. The project has changed fundamentally over the past years, which means that most posts, talks and examples are no longer correct
  4. One of the selling features was automatically generated Kotlin types from Typescript, but that was turned off a year or so ago and there are practically no docs on how to do it “manually”
  5. The tool that does it has been sitting untouched for 3 years.
  6. I need to wrap a node lib, but it seems all of the effort for the past years has been to support writing React in Kotlin.
  7. The debugging experience across the Kotlin/Js boundary for node is painful.

Sorry for being negative, but I thought I had to balance out my earlier enthusiasm.

I think I should ditch this in favor of just writing TypeScript/JavaScript.

All docs for node libs assume that you are writing in JavaScript/TS. When the experience of doing it in Kotlin is this painful, I don’t really see any reason to do it.

I think I’ll wrap up my node stuff in a container and live my life outside of this solution 😅

Google and DDG are being equally crap on this: does anyone remember who that person was//where the github was that had created a bunch of charts for basic life skills? They were hex grids with each hex being some milestone for the skillset, like the baking one had "prepared a yeast-risen dough"

EDIT: Fortunately I slacked a colleague about it once and we talk so rarely it was still in the history.

They were hosted at: https://github.com/sjpiper145/MakerSkillTree

In a bill was passed to end child marriage and raise the min. age to marry to 18.

The bill passed the Senate unanimously and in the House it passed 192 to 174.

ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY FOUR!!! voted to sustain child marriage! WTF? And they say they need to protect kids from trans people!

One GOP representative argued this would restrict the freedom of those who are of “a ripe and fertile age”.
This is the modern day republican party folks.

"During oral arguments in December, Justice Samuel Alito presented a hypothetical where “somebody graduates from school and starts up a little business in his garage, and 20 years later, 30 years later, the person is a billionaire,” and asked whether the government “can Congress tax all of that.” "

Yes, at a minimum, because you don't start in a garage and get to be a billionaire without committing crimes like wage theft.

Treat it like Civil Asset Forfeiture. That much money is crime.
