Writing, education, people-watching, swearing and absurdly long showers. '90s music > everything else.

P.S. Sorry, but I don't like cats. Except maybe the one in Red Dwarf. He was alright.

OK, it's happening. I'm attempting . Somehow, in the last week or so, I've managed to come up with an idea and a rough plot.

50k words done, baby!

I'm shattered, I have chronic bum-ache from sitting at my laptop so much, the husband forgot what I look like, and my exercise routine went out of the window. However, I have a whole draft of a new novel, which would normally take me years (going by previous efforts). I also learnt loads.

After 28 days of NaNoWriMo, I kind of feel like I've been hit by a bus. (Funny, as buses are a theme in what I'm writing.)

Anyone else? This normal? It's probably a lot to do with the fact I'm a perfectionistic, detail-oriented, edit-as-I-go type, so this has been HARD.

Anyway, just over 5k words to get down in the next two days ....

And that wasn't today's only win. I popped into Sainsbury's on my way home from a work thing earlier. I was feeling confident with just 800 words to go at that point, so I picked up a celebratory advance bottle of fizz. AND I ONLY GOT ASKED FOR ID! 😱🍾🏆

Hit another landmark, but I'm still two days behind because work was crazy last week. It's touch and go now ... 😬

Well, shag me sideways, upside down and all around. I caught up! 1,590 words to write tomorrow and I'll have done it! 🙏😬👩‍💻

Met today's target by the skin of my teeth following an existential - I mean, plot - crisis. 😥

cathitza,
@cathitza@mastodon.world avatar

Should have hit this milestone yesterday, really, but a busy weekend messed me up. I don't how the hell I'm going to come up with another 25k words, though. I don't have enough plot left! 😩

Caught up on my missed day! Feel so much better for that.

With ‘bro’ being increasingly used in a particular way, I think it’s time to hail the originals.

cathitza,
@cathitza@mastodon.world avatar

@mxtthxw I used to stalk them round London when I was twelve. 😂

@mxtthxw @DJDarren Claim to fame: teenage me is in that documentary. I look like Kevin from Kevin and Perry.

@mxtthxw Craig wasn’t really on the scene by that point (he ended up doing well behind the scenes in the music industry, I think). I liked Luke because I always went for the underdog, but saw (stalked) Matt more as he lived a bus ride away. I have some funny stories from that time.

I saw this on FB earlier and immediately thought it was a comment on spiritual bypassing (the tendency for some spiritual folk to use their beliefs as a way of avoiding challenging personal or political realities).

Then I saw it had been shared by the meditation teacher Tara Brach with the caption, 'the wisdom of elders 💕'. She clearly took it the opposite way.

How do you see it? Curious what the cartoonist intended.

Things I've Googled for my current chapter:

  • Prozac
  • Videos of people falling down stairs
  • Sunrise and sunset times by month in the UK
  • When did the National Lottery start?
  • Synonyms of 'illegal'

And this is why I'm not managing to catch up on my missed day.

cathitza,
@cathitza@mastodon.world avatar

Also, Google has a dire selection of 'people falling down stairs' videos. Loads of staged efforts by stuntmen and one absolutely terrible scene featuring Jeannine from Eastenders.

And I could have added what I've been asking :

  • Can a bus be considered a liminal space?
  • Can you suggest some cheesy names for a facial aesthetics clinic?
  • What can you compare someone to when their eyeline is overdone - other than a panda?
  • Can you suggest a good name for a fictional '90s jungle rave?
  • No, I mean drum 'n' bass - not a rave in an actual jungle.
  • How the fuck do I stop MS Word trying to make me write like an American once and for all?

cathitza,
@cathitza@mastodon.world avatar

@philheppenstall Yeah, but it doesn’t matter what I do, it still tells me certain common UK spellings are wrong. Drives me mad!

And keeping with the theme of mellow efforts from drum 'n' bass producers (although a few years earlier) here's the stunning 'Mind Games' from DJ Crystl. I can never listen to this just once.

And turns out that all these years later, he's offering the wav version on Bandcamp for a limited time:

Ooh, just remembered another one. Another chilled effort from a drum 'n' bass producer: 'Love is not a Game' by J. Majik featuring Kathy Brown. Remember making this a tune of the month back in my journo days.

Probably my current favourite band - well worth catching live. Their sound reminds me of early .

'Dreambuilding (live)' by Goat: https://inv.tux.pizza/watch?v=g4DrXpvD2ZI

This is from their legendary gig ten years ago at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. I was there and am smug AF about this, as it was ridiculously good.
