I think I will start a thread.

A movie I watched this week (by happy accident!) was Swallow.

Incredible, beautiful artistry, direction, acting, sound, color, everything, in this film. Haley Bennett was truly extraordinary as the lead. I prefer her performance to any of this year's Oscar nominees. She held me completely in suspense the whole time, bizarrely relatable.

Highly recommend watching this one, even if only for its spectacular ending!

Best feminist special I've seen since , was Jacqueline Novak's . She's a genius, the way she playfully yet surgically flays open everything we were raised up to believe about gendered sex & bodies.

If you grew up as a straight or straight-passing girl in the 70s, 80s, 90s, chances are you will feel incredibly seen. Also, have I mentioned that she is a genius?

It's definitely a ride. I wouldn't call it gruesome, but it is disturbing.

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

Bottoms, obviously.

If you haven't seen it - go see it! It's really fun and funny.

In that same vein, is Polite Society. Personally I think I liked Polite Society even more than Bottoms, but I'll have to re-watch both.

I also really enjoyed Moxie. Lighter fare, in a kind of teen high school movie way, but I like how it confronts the complicity of adult women in positions of power, & treatment of dating, teen love, sex.

(What's a ? IDK - I guess something I wouldn't be embarrassed to serve up to my son at an appropriate age, & wouldn't need to do clean-up to counteract the sexism.)

By the way, my 10 yo boy said yesterday: "You know how movies often have a lead guy, & he's kind of or very sexist, & then they give him a redemption arc where he 'learns something'? Those movies almost never have him do repairs to the people he hurt. He changed, that's it."

Yeah. Yeah, my dude.

That looks amazing. Definitely putting it on my list.

That trailer makes me think of kind of a hybrid between Ruby in Paradise (amazing movie) and Yes God Yes.

Yes, he liked Ms. Marvel - we both did - and I think Arrival is maybe too heavy given all he's needed to process over the last 4 years, but I think he'll like it later! Thank you!

We also really loved We Are Ladyparts. You might like it if you haven't seen it...

So…re-watched #VforVendetta (2005) after almost 20 yrs & let's just say the Wachowski sisters-McTeigue adaptation of a Thatcher-era comic, swims in a sick miasma of #DejaVu, bolding how our current fascism was previewed by progressive/POC critics of Reagan, Thatcher, Bush(es). Set post-fascist takeover, w/a choleric Hitlerian dictator enriched by corruption & profit off a plague released to scapegoat "outsiders" & spread fear.

The news reports American civil war & #AvianFlu.

A thread: https://progressives.social/@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes@treehouse.systems/112158149698062526

When US responded to ruling of plausible case, by stripping all funding from , I argued that was active US execution of against . New spending bill defunding it until 2025 outstrips that in viciousness & scope.

ALSO NOTE her citation of CNN reporting from 3 wks ago: UN clearly says Israeli govt used torture on UN staff to extract false confessions.

cc @AnarchoNinaAnalyzes

So let's review here: the U.S. and much of the so-called West, cut funding to a UN aid organization that represents the only way to to prevent a literal famine in Gaza, based entirely on unverified accusations from a government engaging in a literal genocide against Palestinians in the territory. Additionally, Israel has never presented any hard evidence that these allegations are true, and that UN agency says Israeli officials extracted flimsy confessions of a UNRWA relationship with Hamas using literal torture. Finally, despite this lack of evidence, Israel's long history of attempting to dismantle the agency that feeds Palestinians, and a UN agency's report that torture was used to extract confessions, the American government's bipartisan position almost two months later is that helping Israel engineer a famine in Gaza by suspending UNRWA aid for the next year at a minimum, is cool and good actually. In fact, we're also going to keep funding Israel and we continue to ship weapons to Netanyahu's military during an ongoing genocide. At what point does this stop being Israel's genocide in Gaza, and start being a joint American-Israeli genocide in Gaza? Because frankly, I think we're already there.

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

Anyway the point is:

With this new spending bill stripping all funding away from , the UN agency that feeds – a population of 2.3 million Palestinians that our ally has openly admitted to intentionally starving to death for the past 6 months as a collective punishment for murdering over 1000 Israelis –the US government has now definitely adopted an official policy of genocide against .

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

My god, this makes everything so much worse. From @nav "That same bill also threatens Palestinians with a cutoff of aid in response to any attempt to seek justice via the International Criminal Court, for alleged crimes committed against them by any Israeli national."

This is another level of evil: basically, if you people ever try to seek the protection of the , or hold us accountable in any way, we will help starve you permanently.

I assume most Israelis, the vast majority of whom distrust & loathe & want him replaced, are picking up what Gantz is laying down about 's real natsec interests (i.e., maintain diplomatic respect & trust with the US –which is obviously impossible w/Bibi calling the shots).

Serious Q: Have Israelis decided keeping in power forever is worth pushing US power to the "Jews Will Not Replace Us" party (GOP) for keeps? B/c that's where all this is headed in 2024 election.

I am now truly concerned that people in Israel do not understand that insisting on letting Netanyahu run a forever war is going to come at the cost of delivering the US government into the hands of the fascist Republican Party, which likes to use Christian Zionism to whip up its most fanatical & racist base, but which builds its electoral strategy around intentionally increasing terrorism & scapegoating Jewish people globally & in US.

Do most Israelis think this is wise? Not care?

/ UN security council passes [a draft] resolution calling for immediate ceasefire, as US abstains

The UN Security Council voted today (Monday) in favor of a draft resolution including a "demand" for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, which ends in about two weeks, and for the "immediate and unconditional release" of the hostages. 14 countries supported the draft resolution, the United States abstained, since it does not include condemnation of - but did not use its veto.

His subtooting of hints at a govt improvement in -Israel relations (vs rule).

"important to remember…direct dialogue with the U.S. administration is a vital asset that must not be given up...the Prime Minister would do well to go to the U.S. himself, & hold a direct dialogue with President Biden & senior administration officials. This is true routinely [&]certainly true now, when the weight of U.S. support for Israel is so critical"

In 2018 #Netanyahu's govt "pushed through Parliament a new law calling Israel the 'nation-state of the Jewish people'…its primary function is to build a formal foundation for Israel’s annexation of the West Bank—& for a Jewish state eventually to stretch over the whole of Palestine"…In 1948, the Declaration of Independence…created a Jewish state that would ensure 'complete equality of social & political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex'"

"Which means that the return of Palestinian refugees—far from necessitating Jewish exile—could be a kind of return for us as well, a return to traditions of memory & justice that the has evicted from organized Jewish life.

By facing it squarely & beginning a process of repair, both Jews & Palestinians, in different ways, can start to come home."
