World Central Kitchen aid workers killed in Gaza strike, José Andrés' NGO says https://www.axios.com/2024/04/02/gaza-aid-workers-killed-strike-world-central-kitchen

Not to be rude but WTF are "deconfliction mechanisms to avoid targeting aid convoys"? Is that like "having a policy not to attack aid workers"?/s/

"U.S., the UN & many aid organizations have been urging Israel's government for months to do more to improve its deconfliction mechanisms to avoid targeting aid convoys.

The Biden administration raised this issue on a very high level with the Israeli government several times, but there was little change on the ground, U.S. officials say"

Report today that 's military () just murdered 5 volunteers who were providing nourishing meals in .

's humanitarian organization feeds starving people in crisis all around the world.

The larger point is critical: What she (@seachanger) said >>>

@ World Central Kitchen @WCKitchen We are aware of reports that members of the World Central Kitchen team have been killed in an IDF attack while working to support our humanitarian food delivery efforts in Gaza. This is a tragedy. Humanitarian aid workers and civilians should NEVER be a target. EVER. 418 PM - Apr 1,2024 - 1.8M Views
reminder that if Netanyahu & the US gets away with this in — targeting journalists, targeting hospitals and schools and refugee camps, starving millions of children, mass murder on the scale of tens of thousands, shutting down press, internet and information, killing humanitarian workers, preventing crucial aid convoy, firing on people receiving aid, and planning resettlement of regions based on ethnic identity — these methods will be normalized & advanced by other western nations & govts

"Andres said that he is "heartbroken & grieving" for the workers & driver who Israel killed: "The Israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians & aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon," he said.

"A military word used since the 1970s to mean preventing “friendly fire” between allied armies[, d]econfliction is now being applied to attempts to stop aid clinics, hospitals, & schools from being bombed by warring parties."

"At best, both NGOs & armies share the same deconfliction objective: to protect civilians & patients. At worst,…armies use it to limit bad publicity & accusations of war crimes."

Ah yes. Now I see. Used by US to "limit bad publicity."

/ World court orders Israel to take action to address Gaza famine

[…] "The court observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine (...) but that famine is setting in,"

[…] The judges added that this could be done "by increasing the capacity and number of land crossing points and maintaining them open for as long as necessary".

The court ordered Israel to submit a report in a month after the order to detail how it had given effect to the ruling.

A month ???!! No. Come on. That’s ridiculous. How many people are going to starve to death in a month. They should be required to respond in a week or less.

The reporting is the court’s only official lever for accountability. Enforcement is political. Though of course it shouldn’t be that way, it is.

HUGE.

Scathing statement from Patrick Gaspard, the President of the Center for American Progress, which is closely allied with the Biden Admin.

He writes that US State Depart's official stance that is following international law is “a gross disregard of overwhelming evidence.”

was Obama's Director of the WH Office of Political Affairs & served as US Ambassador to South Africa. He was Executive Director of the DNC & in charge of its support of Obama's re-election campaign.

"The United States…cannot heedlessly deliver offensive weapons as the Israeli government continues to bombard & starve innocents on a mass scale. These actions have nothing to do with self defense; they are clearly intended as collective punishment & are resulting in the complete devastation of Palestinians as a people."

"It's a falsehood with catastrophic implications to assert otherwise."

"There is no time to spare in pulling back from this outrageous assertion by the State Department."

"Israel must take action to prevent mass starvation. If this requires a temporary ceasefire & Israel delivering & distributing the food, then so be it.

Mass starvation of human beings violates the moral code…The present government has no right to betray Israel’s national ethical code because of its internal political dynamic & desire to hold onto power.

-Yitz Greenberg, "theologian & ethicist & the author of The Triumph of Life: A Narrative History of Jews & Judaism"

"Mass starvation attacks the civilian population primarily, & mostly kills the weak, the impoverished & the vulnerable people who cannot fend for themselves, especially children. As a Jewish & democratic state, Israel cannot allow this to happen even if this means fighting Hamas with one hand tied behind its back (at least temporarily)."

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

"It is particularly disturbing to hear that the internal pressure exacted by religious voters-based parties (such as Religious Zionist Party & Otzma Yehudit) are pushing the government to inflict more damage on Palestinians & to hold back humanitarian aid. Allowing this tragedy to occur would leave an indelible historic stain on Jewish religion."

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

"The Talmud speaks of certain acts/policies that are unforgivable b/c they are a chillul Hashem, a desecration of God’s name [&] our religion. It defines such an act as one in which people who hear of it would say “I want to have nothing to do with a God or a religion that allows such behaviors.” This is exactly what decent people will say if they hear that Israel, by action or inaction, starved 1000s of Palestinians to death. This sin…would bring shame & an evil reputation on the Jewish people"

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

"Allowing such a cruel fate to be inflicted on Palestinians also would be a particular violation of Jewish ethics based on memory of Jewish history. The Torah instructs us to be particularly caring of strangers’ lives & of vulnerable people b/c we were oppressed as outsiders & vulnerable people in the land of Egypt.In the past century, Jews were tortured & murdered through mass starvation…We should be doubly sensitive & proactive to assure that “never again” is this fate inflicted on any people"

chargrille,
@chargrille@progressives.social avatar

"This issue is more than a moral one. Throughout the world–& in the US in particular–there is widespread support for Israel…Mass starvation of Palestinians could turn millions of people against the Jewish state. This loss of support could undermine the security of Israel & threaten its existential support among Western powers.

…to urge that [Israel] defy world opinion because it is unfair or biased against us, would be no consolation – or help – in the face of a catastrophic fall in legitimacy"

…from the very beginning the US administration insisted that Israel start to plan the “day after,” & present a viable plan for the fighting, w/minimal civilian casualties. [PM] Netanyahu rejected or fudged both requests"

Israel has imposed "a massive destruction of both homes & public buildings in the city of , the forced movement of over one million civilians from northern Gaza to the center & southern Strip, creating a vast humanitarian problem of homeless, displaced Palestinians…

The number of persons killed progressively mounted to over 30,00…at least a third of them children…Though Israel denied that it was on a vindictive journey of revenge, the world started to view the situation differently"

chargrille,

"Israel’s original reaction to the demand for the systematic entrance of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip was a categorical “no”…

Both the US administration & other international players are trying to get Israel to avoid a planned attack on Rafah – the last town in the Gaza Strip that Israel has not [demolished] where over one million displaced Gazans are currently living in tents & other provisional forms of shelter.

Israel is adamant in its refusal…

However, the worst deterioration concerns Israel’s relations with the American Administration in general, & between President Joe Biden & Netanyahu in particular."
