Wilson Street in the Merchant City area of Glasgow.

@thisismyglasgow The original police box sat above disused public toilets on a traffic island in the middle of Wilson St. The street was paved in granite blocks and the renovated police box was returned to its new position on the pavement. It was forever being photographed by tourists, quite an attraction.

Laurieston House on Carlton Place in Glasgow. A sadly neglected Georgian gem in a primarily Victorian and Edwardian city, Laurieston house was designed by Peter Nicholson in 1802 as a showpiece for John Laurie's development of a high class residential area on the southern banks of the Clyde.

@thisismyglasgow Laurieston House is an iconic building I’ve been in. The stunning cornicework was in amazingly good condition, despite the odd hole drilled for cables when in MOD use. Conservators had been at work and had exposed patches of walls and annotated every layer of paint that had been applied since it was built since 1805. It reminded me if Moatbrae in Dumfries. Poor internally but wind & watertight. Originally two almost identical houses, the inferior one was for Laurie’s brother.

The former Gordon Brothers warehouse on the corner of Glassford Street and Wilson Street in Glasgow. Built in 1908, it was designed in the Glasgow Style by Robertson and Dobbie.

@thisismyglasgow Former Gordon Brothers warehouse became a Peckham’s for a while. Deli and cafe on ground floor (had many a fine breakfast there), and pilates and martial arts on first floor. The two upper floors were empty, to be converted to B&B but it never happened. The view is from the Chrysalis Building diagonally opposite. Looks like a Pink Ribbon walk was passing.

Dizzy Corner, Glasgow.

In the days before mobile phones, if you were meeting someone for a date, you had to arrange a time and place in advance, and then hope they turned up. This corner between Argyle Street and Union Street, close to Central Station, was one popular location for such meetings, in part, because it was an easily recognisable landmark to meet at. It also used to have a large clock, so you could easily know whether or not your date was late.

@thisismyglasgow I always thought dizzy corner was the BHS corner of at Sauchiehall Street-Renfield Street. Maybe there was more than one? I’m not admitting it happened to me. BTW the spot is very near what was The White Elephant, a great disco in the senenties. Latterly a cleared gap site after a fire, not sure if redevelopment has started, it’s been a while since I passed it.

The Screen Machine service has been in operation for 25 years.

It was due to be taken off the road next month because the lease on the current vehicle was coming to an end.

Operator Regional Screen Scotland has secured £350,000 funding to keep it going another two years.
Which is a great thing. I have seen many, if infrequent screenings on board.

chrysalis,
@chrysalis@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen It was about 25 years ago that I came across the Screen Machine when it was quite new. I was working on Islay and came across the vehicle stuck on one of the hairpin bends above Port Askaig.

A blue plaque on Ruskin Terrace in the West End of Glasgow marking the birth place of the actress Deborah Kerr. Born in 1921, she was the first Scot to be nominated for an acting Oscar, and she appeared in films such as From Here To Eternity and An Affair to Remember. In 1994, she was given an Academy Honorary Award for her dedication to acting.

@thisismyglasgow For years Helensburgh claimed Deborah Kerr as one of theirs, but it turned out she only lived there. I was quite chuffed thinking I shared my birthplace with a Holywood star and John Logie Baird 📺🎥

Love this stained glass on Ross's Original Bar on Mitchell Street in Glasgow. It's housed in Gordon Chambers which was designed by Burnet, Boston and Carruthers. It was built in 1905 and I presume this is also when the stained glass dates from.

@thisismyglasgow @ncdominie Yeah it’s a good one, one of a pair in a very ornate wooden panelled dining room. Mansionhouse was built around 1875, in a nice setting, now a care home. Trump is almost the neighbour.

The Logan and Johnstone School of Domestic Economy overlooking Glasgow Green. Founded in the 1890s by William Logan and his wife Jean Johnston, this school provided assistance, education and upbringing for poor or destitute step-children and orphans.

chrysalis,
@chrysalis@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow The School of Domestic Economy was converted at some point into the Dolphin Arts Centre. Now converted to flats I think. I inspected it in 1999 just after a huge showfall that paralysed the city centre, so I put on ny wellies and walked there and back. It was in a sad state at that tine.

Glasgow is famous for architecture and music, so for a bit of Christmas Eve fun, I've combined the two. These are nine Glasgow locations name-checked in songs by well-known artists or groups. Can you name all nine locations and songs?

There's no prize on offer, just the opportunity to show off your knowledge of the city.
Feel free to post your answers below. There's bonus points on offer if you come up with different songs for these locations to the ones I did.

The former Kelvinside Parish Church on the corner of Byres Road and Great Western Road in the West End of Glasgow. Designed by J.J. Stevenson in an Italianate Gothic style and built in the 1860s. It's now Oran Mor, a bar and arts venue.

chrysalis,

@thisismyglasgow I remember 50 yrs ago there was a sign fixed half way up the front elevation of the then Kelvinside Parish Church, now Òran Mór arts and entertainment venue, on the corner of Byres Rd and Great Western Rd in the West End of Glasgow. The sign was a protest indicating the height of the then proposed flyover at the top of Bryes Rd, one of many abandoned road proposals in the city.

Five-storey Partick Tenement on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow. Built in 1903, it was designed by F. Burnet and Boston. The corner turrets with their pepper-pot roofs makes this one of the most distinctive tenement buildings in the local area.

chrysalis,
@chrysalis@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow There was a serious proposal years ago to build a 14 storey block of flats on the vacant site directly behind this fine tenement. The site used to be a ships chandlers, in Dalcross Street. It was very odd to see boats so far from water. Proximity to the underground station was one of the issues with the proposal.

I’d booked a Glasgow city centre hotel in July but my car was banned from the new LEZ, despite being a low emission diesel. So I parked in Laurieston, Southside not in LEZ & used footbridge over the Clyde to the city centre. At 143 Oxford St I spotted this potential Art Deco masterpiece. 1937 6-storey 4-bay Art Deco former drapery warehouse. Unfortunately it’s a building at risk, in poor and deteriorating condition. #glasgow #architecture #glasgowbuildings #tradeston #laurieston #scotland

@fluffgar @thisismyglasgow Here’s an example of what can be done to rescue a Deco masterpiece: The Chrysalis Building at 59 Hutcheson Street, at the corner with Wilson St in the Merchant City. Former warehouse converted into an award-winning block of 36 flats. Stunning flats, views and location. All wheelchair accessible. No car parking, but cars not essential when everything is on your doorstep. Markies is the corner shop.
