What is something you know a lot about, yet it's not your job or anything related to your other hobbies?

I can identify every kind of cloud, tell you how a t-storm, hurricane, and tornado work, and I watch every meteorological documentary I can find. 🌧️ 🌩️

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi Typography. I was a typesetter in a former life and it’s still pretty much my first love.

Another thing I will not miss about living here - the HOA. The annual Halloween "forbidden" list was tucked into my storm door. No decorations on lawns, trees, shrubbery, cars (that's a new one), loud Halloween music, large gatherings outside (they define 'large' as more than five people), loud parties, and trick-or-treating between 7 and 8 pm only. Decorations on porches and patios are subject to fines unless they meet the following requirements: etc. etc.

Ok, Stepford clipboard people 🙄

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi I have absolutely never understood the people who rail endlessly against government, but live where there's an HOA. When I first moved here we were in a community garden, and one of the other gardeners came there from the neighborhood next door because they weren't allowed to have perennials in their planters. Perennials!

My parent's financial advisor just called and asked if we could do a virtual meeting later today instead of in person. He's home with -take a guess - COVID. He was just a week away from getting his booster, too.

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi Unfortunately my kid got it last week (hey, weird, the company dropped their masking requirements and everyone got sick), and is really struggling. Used all their sick time, too, of course, eating into next year's.

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi Yeah, unfortunately both my kids have been hit with it this year, and it's been substantial for both of them. But, ya know, you usually end up at urgent care and the ER, several times, when you have a cold, too, right?

Good afternoon (just). I seem to be very anxious at the moment, I was awake worrying in the night then I had anxious dreams. My excitement at starting my PhD has given way to nervousness about the trip down to Surrey, which is ridiculous. I have travelled to America by myself, I can certainly travel to Guildford. I know it’s natural to feel nervous before starting something new, especially when it’s something I’ve wanted for so long. I’ll go for a run later, that will help. My brain is so unhelpful sometimes. What’s everyone else up to this Sunday?

cjonthehudson,

@cobalt @dancinyogi @purplepadma Just popping in to say sorry to you both . . . so hard to deal with.

(Weirdly, my grandfather, who was a mentally ill abusive bastard his entire life, became his sweetest self at times in Alzheimer's. He raged, too, but it wasn't so different from before.)

This may be an incredibly simplistic and possibly stupid question, but if drugs like Sudafed don't work (which I've known for years, and why I don't bother taking them), why did the FDA approve them in the first place?

cjonthehudson, (edited )

@dancinyogi in the original formulation, worked just fine.

The reality is that nearly all health and medical studies are done on a frustratingly small number of people. Results are easily skewed, and nearly always biased. A single case study of a handful of people can stand for years (decades) before further analysis is done… largely because the only funding for most studies is profit-driven.

We had dinner with another couple and one casually mentioned that he’s had “many” open relationships in the recent past. This was news to the other, who was shocked. The rest of the dinner was —- awkward 😬

Last night's 'interaction' in the Giant parking lot stuck with me. It's not because it scared me (please, I"m used to it by now), but it frustrates me more than anything. How can people be so ignorant? I just cannot wrap my head around it.

Either way, stand your ground if you find yourself on the receiving end of 'Take that mask off" bullies. You don't owe anyone an explanation for wearing a mask, and you sure don't have to back down. Most of these cowards just yell stuff and run off anyway

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi I’ve tried not to focus on it , but an actor named Will Keenan was attacked from behind, somewhere on the Jersey shore, and hit with such force that he lost sight in one eye. This was 9/3. His family believes the assault was because he was wearing a mask. As we’ve been traveling and trying to stay well (and our kid just got COVID at work), being a little extra aware of the people around.

According to US law, Coco Gauff can be trusted to decide to marry and have kids, vote, work, drive, carry a concealed weapon in her home state of Florida, pay taxes, and win the US Open Women's Championship - but she can't have a beer to celebrate her national championship for another two years.
Take a second and marvel at how weird that is.

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi There is quite a bit of evidence that alcohol and drugs have a disproportionately damaging impact on brains of those under 25. Now, I'd make the same argument for guns. I think the move to the 21yo drinking age had the most impact on acessibility for 14-16yos – when it was 18, I had zero problems getting booze (and getting in bars) from 16 on. We used to get drunk in Pizza Hut!

I found a 1932 of on the cover of a brochure promoting that is filled with absolutely delightful illustrations (and, yes, some casual racism, which I'll leave for another post).

All by Herbert Writer, about whom I know nothing.

A portion of a map from 1932 showing Lake Placid, NY, with a steep mountain (Whiteface Mountain). A cartoon skier is sailing off the mountain to the left, wearing no hat, a scarf, a red sweater or top and blue culottes or the equivalent pants that stop at or are tucked into his boots. A toboggan rider is coming down the mountain, seated comfortably and not holding onto the toboggan at all, wearing a cap with a pom-pom on top and trailing a red scarf. To the right is a skier coming straight at the viewer, his skis a little dangerously askew and his hat flying off. Beneath them all, a golfer in a jaunty plaid cap hits a golf ball toward the skier losing his hat. In the center of them all is the legend "Lake Placid." The colors are all rendered in half-tone dots, the original printing process from the 1932 map this was taken from.
A cartoon man in a boxy suit, a narrow-brimmed hat and an enormous collar (with tie) stands before some tall buildings marked "Troy." His collar is presumably enormous because Troy, NY was known as the Collar City, where the detachable shirt collar was invented, perfected, and manufactured by various firms for many decades, and the textile business had an enormous impact on Troy and the surrounding cities. The colors are all rendered in half-tone dots, the original printing process from the 1932 map this was taken from.

Ever have one of those days when you feel like most people have their lives together and are all the 'in crowd' of life, and you feel like you're on that outside looking in? I get those days a lot. Having one now.

My point is that many of us sometimes feel like we're on the outside looking in for one reason or another. And if there are many of us, you're not alone

For what it's worth ❤️

Short story: I have curly hair. But I straighten it for work to appear “professional.” Or I wear a bun to look “serious.”

These ideas were shaped by social norms + experiences where I’ve been the only woman in the room or dealt w sexual harassment/bias.

But when my 15yo niece visited last week, I marveled at her stunning curls. “It just dries this way,” she said.

And it dawned on me - Wait, mine does too! Or would if I paid less attention to cultural expectations. So I think I’ll do that now.

cjonthehudson,

@Sheril Unfortunately you're not the first person I've heard say she thought her curly hair was somehow "unprofessional." I'm really sorry that constrained you; there's plenty of awful appearance restrictions but that was one I really wasn't aware of.

IMHO, there is too much emphasis put on being perpetually happy. Happiness and unhappiness are ephemeral, two extremes of a constantly swinging pendulum. I don't strive for a life that resembles a drug commercial with shiny, happy people because it's an impossible standard. What matters to me is that, on balance, I'm content. Being content is more of a permanent anchor that helps you take life's hits with perspective while appreciating moments of happiness.
At least, that's what I think. 🤷‍♀️

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi I'm in full agreement with this. Contentment can lead to happiness. But being content (instead of letting preconceived notions of how things should be) is a major tool.

And the drug commercials – all that socializing looks exhausting!

Funny thing. I've been in two car wrecks where my car was totaled. Each time I cleaned my stuff out, I said 'goodbye' to the car and actually felt a little grief! It's like I get attached to my car. I watched Mark clean his car out, and he had no such reaction, but I think that seems typical. I'm the outlying weirdo who gets attached to her cars! Maybe it's because I keep them until they're in nearly as bad shape as Columbo's car. 🤷‍♀️

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi I've had cars I cared about and cars I didn't. I still miss my XTerra because that's the vehicle I had throughout most of my kids' growing up, the one we took camping everywhere, filled to overflowing, the one that had hooks so you could set up a drying rack inside ;) My current car is a car. I like it just fine, but I'm not attached to it.

I suppose I am looking for a bit of validation here. I wear a mask to the grocery/pharmacy/etc. My father is very ill, my mother isn't so great, and I visit them often. I wear a mask so I don't catch COVID and spread it to them. I guess the reaction I get around here for wearing a mask is getting to me. I'm being called paranoid, ridiculous, etc. Not one person wears a mask here, from what I have seen.
Remind me, please, that I'm NOT being ridiculous. I'm surrounded by those who say otherwise!

cjonthehudson,

@dancinyogi Everyone else is being ridiculous. There's a pandemic. We're still (or again) masking most public places we go. My wife is very immune-compromised, I don't want to spread it to her or anyone, I don't miss colds, and I don't need to explain my choice to anyone....
