Both sets of grandparents came to #Canada from #TheNetherlands shortly after WW2. My parents were both born here in #Ontario, and I live in #HamOnt (where a lot of the #Steenhof & #Turkstra clan still resides).

While most of my extended family are Evangelical/Fundamentalist, I am not part of that spiritual & intellectual dead end.

I write programs with code. That code is often #PHP and #JavaScript/#TypeScript, often leveraging #Laravel and #Vue.

@grmpyprogrammer Considering Tesla just fired their entire supercharger team I dunno if it'll be convenient for that much longer.

One of my earlier PRs was to the docs, to add a short description for a method that was overlooked in Laravel v3 or v4. I spent ages trying to make sure it was perfect. Then waited anxiously for it to be approved or commented on. Instead, Taylor deleted it and then had some one else do the issue. Iโ€™ve not bothered trying to help Laravel since. ๐Ÿ˜’ Love Laravel, but that put me off in a big way. I now spend my time doing PRs for those that appreciate them instead.

dandb,
@dandb@mas.to avatar

@outofcontrol I've seen a lot of folks with similar stories. Whatever the reasoning for the way they do things, it doesn't seem like a very welcoming environment.

One thing I don't understand is giving massively profitable corporations money to do things they don't want to do.

How about instead we just legislate that they have to do them? Why can't we do that? Have we entirely forgotten that the government also carries a big stick and not just an unlimited supply of carrots?

In an effort to subsidize large โ€œCanadianโ€ tech companies and insulate them from failed business models, the Canadian federal government has announced $2 billion worth of โ€œinvestment in AI.โ€

Thatโ€™s the revenue of the CBC.

The explanation is that doing this will help โ€œyoung Canadians prepare for a good-paying future jobsโ€.

I guess nobody has told the feds that AI is being used to reduce good-paying jobs and cut the salaries of those who are left doing them.

What a fucking joke.

dandb,

@grmpyprogrammer I'm of the opinion that the Canadian productivity decline and the amount of money being handed to corporations is directly related.

Also socialism for corporations but not for people is gross.

Folks have GOT to stop pretending is some kind of progressive paradise.

It is not.

We have the same compliment of bigots here as everywhere else, except they used to be a little quieter.

We're still driving headlong into neoliberal oblivion. Our institutions are being dismantled and sold off by Conservative premiers.

We are coasting on the fumes of our progressive/socialist past and without a course correction, we're going to crash just like everyone else.

dandb,
@dandb@mas.to avatar

The struggle continues. It is not finished. We have no laurels to rest on.

The same contingent of neer-do-wells that seek to roll back progressive reforms elsewhere are at work here as well.

Canada produces a bumper crop of white supremicists. Outside the major cities Canada is mostly white and mostly conservative.

Our electoral system is weighted in favour of suburban and rural areas. We have 1 conservative party and 3 non + FPTP, virtually guaranteeing conservative wins.

dandb,
@dandb@mas.to avatar

Our cost of living is insane, and there's absolutely no political will (mostly because neoliberal politics is unwilling to actually reign in the corporate hyperobject) to fix it.

Our grocery stores are run by robber barons. Our zoning policies are beholden to NIMBYs and single-family-home builders.

Our phone and internet costs are the highest in the world.

We have some of the highest household debt in the world.

Our entire society is beholden to vested interests, and it shows.

dandb,
@dandb@mas.to avatar

Immigration is the only reason our GDP has increased in the last 10 years. Real GDP is decreasing. Folks are getting poorer.

The NDP (our "socialist" party) and the Liberals are essentially the same thing. Yes, they're not monoculturalists like the conservatives. But they do not have the spine to actually tackle the economic problems that will inevitably lead the stupid herd of Canadian swing voters to turn to monoculturalists every time there's an economic downturn.

dandb,
@dandb@mas.to avatar

Unless there's some major course correction in the next few years, rights for women, LGBTQ+ and disabled folks, etc are all going to be rolled back by conservative majority governments, our institutions sold to foreign companies, our healthcare system turned into a profit distribution centres for Loblaws and Telus, and every single bastion of our former prosperity dismantled.

There is so much work to be done in this country. SO MUCH.

Let me show you how easy it is to create a simple counter web app using the new Streaming HTML workflow in Kitten before peeling away the magic layer by layer so you learn how to make the same app using:

โ€ข HTMX & WebSockets
โ€ข Plain old JavaScript, and, finally,
โ€ข Without Kitten in pure Node.js.

Enjoy + let me know what you think.

As a developer I love how arrays are so flexible and can be used in so many ways.

Also as a developer I hate how they're so opaque and can be used in so many ways.

dandb, to logitech
@dandb@mas.to avatar

I've been using the for about two years now.

I really like the low-profile design, the base is really solid, no connection issues, everything works as expected.

The only real problem with this thing is the keycaps. I just broke one by accidentally popping it off. They have these flimsy plastic clips that keep them in the place, and I just knew one would break sooner or later.

Also the black coating has started to wear off on common keys.

dandb,
@dandb@mas.to avatar

Overall I'd say this thing is definitely not worth the (steep) price.

I'm also not sure mechanical keyboards are for me. I tried to find a compromise with this model's low-profile, less-clicky keys and though I like the height, I don't love the feeling or the sound.

I'd much rather use something more like a laptop keyboard, but it doesn't look like anyone except cheap noname Chinese brands are making any.
