In the 80s I was denied a South African passport for political reasons. This made no difference to my excursions to other countries - for "business" or pleasure - because I had a valid EU passport.
Dual nationality was absolutely legal.
But, even though the apartheid authorities couldn't stop my trips without risking a diplomatic incident, they could've called me in for "questioning" if they'd had the ability to identify me at the borders by hotel reservations or facial recognition tech.

@CrazyMyra My Dad left SA for the UK in the sixties ages 18 because he was helping with the protest movement. He had to get on a boat and pay his passage scrubbing the decks.

An interesting article in the New Scientist about Rosalind Franklin suggesting she was not a victim of theft, but part of a collaboration (based on a recently discovered letter and an article she contributed to that wasn't published plus a couple of more things).

“It deprives her of her agency,” says Matthew Cobb at the University of Manchester, UK. “That’s not right.”

    @GossiTheDog @malwaretech I was getting hectored by a self-appointed guardian of Mastodon morality for not using a CW hashtag for Twitter-related posts.

    I've been here six years, they've been here five months.

    And, frankly, if you're too sensitive to be able to handle something in your timeline referencing Twitter, then maybe social media isn't for you. Do these people actually exist or is it just catsbummouthed guardians of morality badgering people just in case?

    @jaseg @GossiTheDog @malwaretech They can already filter, say, Twitter and Elon Musk. People are complaining about the use of birdsite and Elmo instead. Just add them to your filter then. It's quicker than badgering all perceived miscreants.

    As you are probably aware, we've got a spammer running wild across the fediverse, setting up multiple new accounts on different instances on a daily basis. They are easy to spot because each time a new one is set up, it refollows all of the same accounts, so if you've seen a bunch of follows from accounts with usernames that are some variation of "thegx", that's what's going on.

    Please report these new spam accounts as they pop up so I can get them all blocked. Also, please DO forward your reports to the home instance. They should also be informed that they are being hijacked by a spammer. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted reports on these accounts. I haven't replied individually to each and every one because then I'd be spamming you, but please know that I appreciate it, and I am suspending all of these accounts as soon as they come to my attentions.

    @mmdolbow yeah, it's been going on for a while.

    I started blocking them, but the current thinking is to report and block (using the option to notify the admin of their Mastodon instance).

    They're just annoyingly spamming with new accounts for a gambling exchange.

    I was looking for an old Mastodon post which resulted in me reading through a lot of my old posts and I thought some of them were decent, but only had like five favorites and I think it’s because it was posted back when I first started and I was pretty much talking to myself on here, so I’m going to start boosting some of the older posts to try to give them a second chance at being seen.

    There is a person trying to smear an org in my field by making new email accounts and pretending to be a bunch of different people complaining about them to people like me. They seem to be completely unaware that their writing style is distinctive enough to give them away every time.

    This is exhausting. I wasn’t trying to be difficult, I was trying to, I thought helpfully, explain why I didn’t use those tags. But this sort of thing happens like half the time I post photos, and it makes it really unrewarding to take the time to share.

    Please respect artists’ choices for how they describe their own work.
