What it will take for me to no longer mask is my death.i don't give a flying fuck how few cases there are in your "neck of the woods." It would take exactly one asshole who thinks they have a bad cold to infect me and my chances of it being a big nothing are real slim.

Does not surprise me. My dad was on the War Crimes Comission on Guam after WWII. One of the primary defendants, a Major Matoba, had learned about ritual cannibalism in China and promoted it among the occupying forces on Guam. There were multiple convictions of various charges of treatment of captured American flyers.
I have detailed documentation if interested.

It is not a dogma of balance. The Times has become a right wing mouthpiece. They target a different demographic from f news, Newsmax, et al, but have the same agenda: get republicans in power; scrap democracy, oligarchy here we come!

hmmm ... Rowan Atkinson makes several valid points here, but others that make no sense to me, such as "the environmental problem with a petrol engine is the petrol, not the engine ..." What?! (fyi, "Mr Bean" Atkinson holds bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering).

he alludes to it obliquely when he writes "use it as little as possible."

Ordering food IS AN ORDEAL FOR BLACK PEOPLE here.🙄

"The customer, identified only as Kassie, said she ordered a blackened chicken panini at the Aviation Inn in Duncansville and said the bar went silent when she walked in to pick it up. As a woman of color, Kassie said she was used to the treatment.

“People kind of stare at you being the minority and not the majority,” Kassie said.

What Kassie wasn’t expecting though was to look at her receipt to see the N-word."

To my fellow whitefolk:
People can claim all they want that they are not racist but being "not racist" as in not actively hating people they know nothing about except their skin color is not enough. To stamp out white supremacy requires overt effort. Don't make "jokes" like that, and if someone else does, call them out. Other kitchen help were laughing at it. Don't do it even if you KNOW "they" won't hear. Get that shit out of your consciousness forever.

Please move far away. Not that schools in Florida should have to deal with this kind of nonsense either, but no one in Montgomery County, Maryland is here for this kind of nonsense. Or Mt. Lebanon, PA. It’s quite brazen to sue or try to take over school boards in highly-Democratic areas, but that seems to be the next front in the anti-LGBTQ materials in schools crusade.

These lawsuits should be thrown out because they have no standing to sue. Books on a library shelf are not harming them. If discussions in school offend them, they can homeschool. If rainbow colors offend them, well fukem. If their religion demands they never encounter anyone unlike them, then it is THEIR job to find isolation, not ours to change on yheir behalf. Move to a desert island.

"Men passionately desire to live after death, but they often pass away without noticing the fact that the memory of a really good person always lives. It is impressed upon the next generation, and is transmitted again to the children. Is that not an immortality worth striving for?"

Great quote. I have no delusions of some afterlife in some paradise, nor in some hell. Dead is dead. But every now and then I am reminded by something someone says that there are people who will remember what "that guy" did for them decades hence. It feels good now. Beats striving for something that won't happen, and you won't know didn't happen.

Downloaded an app that recognises bird songs the other day. This morning it has already identified 27 different bird including a Sardinian Warbler and an Icerine Warbler (both rare), Firecrest, Cirl Bunting, Great Spotted Woodpecker and many more...

(Someone on Mastodon recommended the app; I wish I could remember who!)

My daughter has it. I was visiting her in Az and mentioned a call I heard in the backyard. She grabbed her phone and replied with what it was, plus 2 others. Blew me away. I have one for id-ing plants; use it while clearing invaders from my woods. I saw an ad for one id-ing rocks a day or 2 ago. It is possible now to understand so much more about our surroundings, we can be almost as smart as indigenous people!

There are probably others. But this one is great. Gives a ton of info about where found, whether invasive, how to care for, etc.
I've tried it on multiple instances of some very similar plants and it is 100% consistent. Even told me a tree i have in a pot needed iron!

It is significant that there is such outrage over the firing of arguably the most horrible primetime talking head ever. Not admitting his duplicity was mocking them, was playing them for fools. Why? Because they ARE fools. They will never change. They are like a roombah. They will chase a conspiracy until they hit a wall, then turn and chase another, as long as it includes condemnation of some demographic other than their own.

dbc3,
@dbc3@mastodon.world avatar

@GottaLaff
Someone on our street has a robot lawnmower that works like a roomba. Just about twice the size. I guess it is programmed to know the property lines. Our dog Kaz is fascinated by it. Stops on walks to watch it meandering. One day it came straight toward us. When it got really close she lunged at it and it detected her, stopped, backed up, turned and fled. She was so proud!
Made me think of all the cowardly bullies.

their complaint falls flat if nobody is tuning in to AM anyway. I rarely turn on the radio in car. IfbI do it's FM. On long drives I play CDs or a separate player with thumb drives.

PS: I grew up on AM and am probably older than 98% of the letter writers

This isn't really on-brand with my usual toots, but I find Rod Stewart as a cultural artifact endlessly fascinating.

He's a household name, but you've never really met a massive fan of his. Almost any hit song of his you can think of is a cover. I don't think he plays an instrument. He covers a lot of like Motown songs. He seemed to make the move to covers immediately after his first hit solo album.

He's 78, but he seems like he should be about 108 by now.

Anywho, this will be my TED talk.

dbc3,

@andrew i can only think of one song of his, but I love it enough to have him on my short list of favorites from when I was listening to AM radio all day and all of the night.
