Hey team, as a reminder, we've got the mastodon fork standup tomorrow. Nothing formal, just a quick status update. The big thinkers up top are excited to see their vision being built.

    @BoscoZebra In an existential sense, I can’t say that a single thing I do is “important” in the big picture. Some days, I get hung up over the idea that nothing I do actually matters. But, that could be said of any person, any effort, any dream.

    There certainly won’t be statues built of me, or plays written in my honor. I probably won’t even have a Wikipedia page. But, I do feel that I’m writing about a significant development in online communities, one that could change the Internet as a whole. Being a part of that gives me drive, and a sense of purpose.

    I’ve been writing a novel and I think I might just chuck it all out.

    My problem is that I always start with a simple premise. And then things get more and more fantastical until the whole thing gets weighed down by the bizarre plot line.

    For example, in my current novel, what starts off as a simple connection between two people turns into a metaphysical journey into the transcendence of ecstasy.

    I can’t just let my characters be happy. I have to launch them into an entirely new plane of existence where their minds become subsumed by a universal consciousness.

    I’ve gone overboard. Again.

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @atomicpoet You’re not alone! I have a similar problem with scope creep, although it often happens in the planning stages.

    For a while, my cloud drive was a graveyard of great ideas. I kept biting off more than I could chew, with not enough breadcrumbs to move from the start of the story to the central idea.

    I may actually pick up trying to write stories again, though. Part of me desperately loves world-building. A challenge I have for myself is to start by writing things that are comically low-stakes, like a plot to buy a coworker a cake to take advantage of their Costco membership.

    For our first article on , we wrote a crash course guide on the protocol and the network, along with what it is, how it works, and how you can get started.

    https://wedistribute.org/2024/05/nostr-crash-course/

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @Huubje I don’t blame you at all. I still think the peer-to-peer aspects of Nostr are interesting and worth writing about, and I do like how they rely on multiple relays, rather than being tethered to a single server.

    I’m doing my best to find the diamonds in the rough, as I think there’s good work happening there, just as there is with Bluesky or Secure Scuttlebutt or wherever else. My whole thing is taking notes on different ideas, and seeing if anything that seems good might help us somehow.

    Fediverse has been, and always will be, my number one place.

    atomicpoet, to bluesky
    @atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org avatar

    So I just tried opting into (https://brid.gy/mastodon/@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org).

    I found it confusing. For one thing, it asks me for my Mastodon account. Though Akkoma uses Mastodon’s API, not all sites recognize this nor support it—I don’t know if BridgyFed would reject.

    Secondly, it’s not clear how to opt in. I think I opted in but there was nothing to say “Congrats! People from can see you!”

    Also, how do I receive posts? That’s not apparent to me.

    @fediversenews

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews Akkoma seems to be a little bit broken for the time being, although the situation seems to be improving.

    Basically: on the Fediverse side, you need to follow @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy. Right now, the follow seems to be at least a little bit broken with Akkoma, stuck in the “Awaiting Approval” state. But, the profile still shows up on Bluesky’s side.

    I’m building a Bluesky list of bridged accounts for testing purposes: https://bsky.app/profile/wedistribute.org/lists/3krwhq36tjs2r

    Unfortunately, Bluesky users have to also opt into the bridge in order for you to see them. Unless we can get the Bluesky team and a bunch of accounts to opt into it, we might not be able to see many people on this side.

    Really annoyed that our server sometimes just drops replies from mastodon.social users. I’m still not totally sure as to what’s causing it!

    Some servers work just fine, others are super janky at the most random times.

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @piggo That’s an interesting idea. Our server runs on Phoenix, Arizona time, maybe it’s better to align that to other servers?

    It’s just weird, some statuses end up being literally unfetchable. I had some luck in the past by disabling Authorized Fetch on the backend, but why that even worked was beyond me.

    deadsuperhero, to fediverse
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    One of the ideas I’ve been kicking around for the is promotion of small businesses by Fedizens. This includes tools, apps, and services, not all of which have to necessarily be super developer-focused.

    If you’re interested in being featured on some kind of directory, or know of a really good candidate, let me know! I have a little list going already, but would love to actually turn it into something.

    rabble, to random
    @rabble@mastodon.social avatar

    Is it true that if two people reply to my this post from different servers they won’t see each others reply?

    Doesn’t that make user and community discovery really hard? How do you have emergent conversations with new people?

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @rabble It’s not completely true, but can happen.

    Here’s a way to understand it: there are two ways conversations are handled in the Fediverse:

    1. Replies are delegated by the author of the Thread. This is how Diaspora, Friendica, Streams, and a bunch of “long-form social” platforms have done it. The whole conversation tree can be pulled in, but a thread with hundreds of comments can potentially bring performance issues.
    2. Replies are constructed based on what the observer’s server is already aware of. The author will see everything, but that context is not necessarily set for readers from other instances.

    There are some interesting proposals coming out of Streams to basically treat conversations more like form 1 rather than form 2. I’m not sure if it’s a proposed FEP yet, but the idea is to make ActivityPub natively work this way across implementations.

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @rabble you can see every reply by viewing the thread on the original server. You will only see replies that your server knows about in the local view, plus any mentions that you appear in.

    It…could definitely be a lot better. The improvement I described earlier to propagate responses to anyone who fetches a thread could potentially fix this, but there’s still the case of loading a thread with many, many replies that’s still something of a headache.

    Do you want to help support musicians, like the ones you hear on @radiofreefedi? We are looking to increase our coverage, starting with more Mixtapes. But, we need your help!

    We are looking for volunteers interested in helping us make more Mixtapes, with the ultimate goal of releasing a new one every Friday. Don't worry - we'll be using a round robin so that different people take turns.

    If you'd like to help out with this, send us a message!

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @wjmaggos I don’t think any of this is a problem - it’s akin to a discovery index filled with accounts across the Fediverse, except it takes the form of a radio station. I listen to it when I’m driving to or from work, and it fills that niche of feeling like radio, but entirely comprised of music from this space.

    With CC Music, I mean, I get it? I’ll just say that, having poured years of my life and thousands of dollars into running a CC/PD Video hub on PeerTube, almost nobody seemed to really care about creating a community around it or supporting it. I think CC is useful, but I think it’s dead as an actual cultural movement. Taking a purist stance on how people license their own work is…less than useful.

    I do kind of agree with you on Funkwhale, I think they really missed an opportunity by not investing in social features early on. There is a CC Music server called Open.Audio, but if you look at it…there’s just a real lack of community. It’s more of a “music locker” where the uploaders don’t often seem to be the artists themselves.

    Anyway, the point of RFF is to produce a low-friction, grassroots method of building a music community, and they’ve honestly done an amazing job. The music I’ve discovered through it is often amazing, and there’s some mad talent here.

    Weird take: Midway Games should have never been sold to Electronic Arts.

    As a video game, NFL Blitz was always vastly superior to Madden. Yes, Madden is more realistic, and Blitz is almost cartoon-like by comparison, but the latter was always way more fun than the former.

    Weird thoughts about the Thumbnail / DDoS problem…

    1. What if a trusted, vetted Non-Profit ran some infrastructure, like some high-concurrency server for caching thumbnails?
    2. What if we had relays cache a thumbnail, hash it, compare it against the same thumbnail on other relays, and then provide thumbnails to instances?

    Idk, maybe I’m just wrong here. But the way I see it, we could either put trust in an entity / service dedicated to this, or we could come up with some kind of zero-trust method?

    Just passing thoughts. It’s just such a frustrating problem.

    deadsuperhero,
    @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

    @deathkitten I can understand the hesitancy a little bit, instantly trusting other instances to do it for you could result in some really weird / gross problems due to malicious actors.

    I’ve spent the last few years in Avionics for Aircraft Maintenance. While working on F-16s sounds cool on paper, it was…truly god-awful sometimes. The military, even in the modern era, is profoundly dysfunctional and at odds with itself.

    I joined because I was vulnerable and nearly homeless and had to take a bum deal. I burned out in tech, and it almost killed me. I burned out again, and I almost killed me.

    I don’t have regrets. I married an amazing lady. I lived through some incredible experiences, like jumping out of a plane. I met some of the best people I’ve ever met, only to miss them over and over.

    @maegul I think the only way around this problem is to not play that game.

    The biggest, most promising thing that I’m seeing is the collaboration between SocialHub (FEPs), FediDevs (Testing Suite), and SocialCG (documenting behaviors of common approaches, like Webfinger usage).

    This kind of collaboration is already bearing lots of fruit, and may take us to a place where projects aren’t so centered around Mastodon as a platform.
