software building types of people often talk about friction in context of something to remove, an impediment to the "smooth" use of the system in question, but that's got me thinking about how useful friction is, a key to building traction and not sliding around all over the place, and how that utility could be leveraged to a computer operator's advantage in a humane and literate environment without turning it into an impediment.

I think we need to scale down, get the basic stuff right, and stop worrying about getting 2 million followers on Instagram. Let’s start with a thousand people who are willing to chip in a couple of bucks and see where that gets us.

@ernie is talking about journalists, but could just as easily be talking about musicians, or actors, or novelists, or programmers, or just about any of us working class folk.

Listening to Kareem Abdul Jabbar talking with Ben Sidran from Ben’s NPR show from back in the day, “Talking Jazz”, and it’s wild to realize that Kareem was trying his hardest to start a jazz label in the time leading up to their interview, and he had to tell Ben he’d decided to not do it, because he couldn’t do it justice without leaving basketball, and because he was concerned with making sure the artists got paid, which put him at odds with the industry at large.

The squishy concepts around as it exists in my mind are starting to unwind into structured data and flows and I suspect we’ll have a nice sparse scaffold within the next few days from which to start bolting things together and so forth. Lots of eager assistance has made itself available with a delightfully diverse set of skills and backgrounds and we’re hard at work trying to ungate them and set them on their own paths ASAP.

So, as I alluded to yesterday, I've been chatting with folks about the current state of affairs regarding Bandcamp's acquisition and, most recently, massive layoffs. While it's been a good platform for a lot of independent musicians for a number of years, I don't trust the motivations of the new ownership to continue to operate the platform in a way that benefits those same independent musicians, and I don't believe going to yet another corporate-owned-and-operated silo is in anyone's best interests.

In order to provide an alternative that respects musicians, reviewers, and fans alike, MountainTown Technology is undertaking the creation of Aural Isle, a server platform that will provide a self-hostable Bandcamp-like interface for artists, labels, curators, and fans.

Our initial goal is a barest minimum implementation of the functionality needed to get things off the ground, but we have a much longer vision of how a distributed, federated network of Aural Isle servers could work to develop the network effects that are an important part of making sure art finds its way to its audience.

We have set up the barest of code repositories to hold this project here:

    https://code.communitymedia.network/MountainTownTechnology/aural_isle

As you will see, it is simply a README and a LICENSE at this stage. Actual coding begins later today as I scaffold out the basic structure of the repo and project.

We expect to have something in folks' hands that's useful and usable within the next month. Obviously our longer term goals will go beyond that timeframe, but we're eager to get this out into the world and get people jamming with us on where it could go.

If you're interested in helping, great! We are definitely looking for collaborators to work with us, and are currently holding discussions about the project in one of our matrix channels - reach out to @ajroach42 via DM if you'd like to get access.

If you'd like to support us, also great! We'll be setting up an OpenCollective project shortly to ensure transparency and provide a way for us to pay contributors along the way.

Prior to that, feel free to back @ajroach42 's Patreon if you're insistent in getting financial support sent our way.

We know there are a number of other projects underway to provide similar functionality, and we welcome the confluence of ideas in this space. We look forward to seeing what the future of music distribution might look like and hope to be working with y'all on it together in the very near future.

I'm sure Andrew will have more to say about the project and the vision later today, but I'm happy to handle and/or fumble any questions anyone may have.

    Thanks for reading!
