There are many things about git submodules that are more unpleasant than they should be but one of the most frustrating is that you have to decide early whether to add the submodules as git+ssh URLs or https urls. If you pick ssh URLs, your Windows users using GUIs will not be able to check out the submodules. Whereas if you pick https URLs, your Mac and Linux users using the command line will not be able to check out the submodules. Once you have picked one of these choices, you can't change it
@mcc "Whereas if you pick https URLs, your Mac and Linux users using the command line will not be able to check out the submodules. Once you have picked one of these choices, you can't change it" What?
Our goal is to make GNOME OS a daily driver for QA and finalize the migration, but this work will be fundamental to the future of all secure image based / immutable Linux distributions.
You know why I like @forgejo so much? I just did a "fly-by" patch on the documentation because I was annoyed with how complicated that one page was written. So I forked the repo, cleaned up that page and submitted a Pull Request. And guess what? No discussions, no back and forth, it just got merged! Now THAT is how you attract new contributors to your Open Source project. Thank you! My first contribution!
I feel like excellent research can be made on this topic, "Territorial Defense in Source Code Maintainership".

My first apps pushing real memory requirements, "hundreds of KB to MB", were on Unix systems. The second was Windows 95. The peculiarities of PC memory issues were just running config tools to get Tie Fighter running. Seeing it spelled out so painfully makes me glad I missed all that. #history#ComputerHistory#programming#RetroComputing From 0 to 1 MB in DOS
I was looking into adding a “simple” feature to a core GNOME app and backed away slowly as I realized how seemingly overcomplicated the codebase is. 😬
It’s probably mostly due to me being unfamiliar with both the codebase and the language bindings, but it makes me feel sad. I thought it would be a pretty simple addition… but I’m in no place to rewrite the app, either. 😝
@gamingonlinux@gabboman so reddit mods, the users of a platform, that sells their text data to generative AI companies, which provide services to spam sites, which flood the internet with AI generated spam, which then regurgitate back into reddit.
