@andycarolan I've been using Flare, which also block out a lot, but these are SO much more comfortable.

What this headline fails to say (although it's stated clearly in the first paragraphs of the article) is that this only applies to people who get multiply vaccinated before their first infection.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/vaccination-dramatically-lowers-long-covid-risk/

(You have to read a long way into that article before you get to this line: "The prevalence of is currently 11% among those who are unvaccinated and 5% among those who have had two or more doses of the vaccine." Is a 6% reduction "dramatic"?)

Watched a bit of Disco at the BBC last night with the kids. We were really enjoying it... and then of course, after 20 minutes of light and noise, I felt sick and poisoned and couldn't form words and had to go and lie in the dark on my own for the rest of the evening, with just the faint sounds of my family having fun downstairs. And I still feel crap this morning.

(If you're still trying to avoid getting Long Covid yourself or giving it to someone else, you're doing the right thing.)

"...while deaths from acute infection and the risk of the NHS becoming overwhelmed have been an indisputable political focus, the slow, rumbling ruin of lives, healthcare planning, and economies by years or decades of chronic disease is perhaps harder to grapple with and easier to kick down the road for some other, future administration."

Good summary by @chrischirp and Danny Altmann.

One of my kids is non-binary. Both their old school and their current college have been brilliant about it - positive and calmly supportive. I'll always be grateful for that.

There was also a trans kid in their class at school whose family refused to accept his transition and were aggressively hostile and mocking. At school, among his friends, was where he felt safe and free to be himself. It's horrifying that these Tory culture-war bullshitters want that taken away.

Some people are claiming the recent Canadian Long Covid study shows that if you have three or more Covid infections your chance of getting Long Covid is 37.9%.

What the research actually found is that 37.9% of adults with Long Covid (about 11% of the total adult population) had had three or more infections. So 4.1% overall.

4.1% is still bad news when you're looking at a disease that can ruin your life. But it's not 37.9%.

Is there anywhere to buy Studio DVDs online (in the UK) that isn't Amazon or Ebay?

This one looked promising at first but all the links are dead https://www.studioghiblidvd.co.uk/
HMV and the BFI each have a couple of obscure titles, but I'm looking for the big hits (Totoro, Spirited Away, Kiki, Howl's Moving Castle...)
Zavvi has expensive limited-edition "steelbooks" but I just want bog-standard DVDs.
Are they genuinely rare now or am I missing something obvious?

Humphrey Lyttelton, the musician and presenter of , who died in 2008, used to have a nice personal website at humphreylyttelton.com. Something weird has happened to it recently: some of the old homepage text is still there, but merged with nonsense about scratch cards & an 'iGaming entrepreneur'. AI-generated spam presumably?

Anyway, it would be good if someone could edit his Wikipedia entry to change the website link to the Wayback Machine archive version https://web.archive.org/web/20080209212511/http://www.humphreylyttelton.com/

Two years ago today I tested positive for Covid. I was fit and healthy and expected to be back to normal in a few days. It's been two years and I still can't walk 50 yards.

The only people who think is no big deal are those who don’t know enough about it.

    eleanorrees,
    @eleanorrees@mas.to avatar

I missed my mother's wake and my friend's entire funeral. I tried to go to my husband's sixtieth birthday party and had to be taken home. I've missed my kids' school events, chances to see friends, god knows how many more simple normal things. It's taken away the job I loved and the pastimes I loved even more.

I don't want to whinge on but I do think there is still a vast lack of understanding of how much this disease can take from you. It's not just "being a bit tired".

    eleanorrees,

Governments are firmly in the ostrich position on Long Covid: denying funding for research and support, refusing to count cases, and praying that it will somehow go away if we pretend it doesn't exist. We've got to watch each other's backs, babies, because no one else is doing it.

Anyway, I'm supposed to make a list of recovery goals. No. 1: get well enough to go out and find Boris Johnson and kick him in the nuts.

What's your approach to Black Friday sales? Do you buy things in them? Do you share posts against Black Friday as an evil capitalist con?

I guess if you happen to buy a thing in the sale that you had to buy anyway, your best judgement may decide between do or don't buy.
