Well, finally got the results today!

It's quite funny to me that the country's national state sponsored radio openly acknowledged daily that virtually everyone in the country is desperately unhappy at the moment and even runs features on how we might be able to artificially increase our happiness, even in the face of it all. Why has it been normalised for a whole country to be sad. If you were looking at it from a biological/ecological viewpoint you would say that system is malfunctioning, you'd then look for what was making it sick and fix it. Instead we're listening to the virus tell us what to do. Like a warped game of 'Simon Says', only Simon is an utter bastard.

If or has touched your life in any way, or if you're just a fan of good scientific evidence, please sign this petition asking for the withdrawal of inaccurate and dangerous clinical advice: https://www.change.org/p/cochrane-withdraw-the-harmful-2019-exercise-therapy-for-cfs-review

Cochrane promised to take action five years ago, then "deprioritised" it and continues to stonewall, while patients continue to be harmed. Enough is enough!

Last boost: also appearing on that list is Adam Afriyie, who broke parliamentary standards by concealing income from AirBNBing his property in Windsor for £2,000 a night and was declared bankrupt after failing to pay £1mn in tax, but is still an MP and still allowed to vote on legislation affecting other people's housing rights.

Oh! If you’re in the UK (or have access to a VPN), my actual mum is the subject of tonight’s episode of Surgeons: At The Edge Of Life on BBC2 at 9pm.

She had cancer in her jaw in 2020, so had to have a chunk of her jaw removed. Since then she’s had a bunch of surgeries to rebuild it - with varying levels of success. So when she was in last October they asked if they could film her op.

Re last boost: I've long had the rule of thumb that any piece of advice containing the word "just" (as in "Why don't you just..." or 'You just need to...") can safely be ignored, because if the solution were that simple you'd have done it already. Nice to know there's a word for it.

Eventually, others would notice and copy the movement, and whoever was last upon sticking a finger to the ear or hadn't noticed gets tackled to the ground regardless of location, and the others would yell "Get down Mr. President!!"

Not going to link to it here, but the BBC are yet again giving publicity to a non-story about the word 'Easter' supposedly being removed from Easter eggs because of Muslims and wokery, whipped up by the usual suspects. I've just complained to the BBC about them playing along with this disastrous culture-war bullshit, and I hope lots of other people will too.

  • it's a multisystem disease that can disable you and ruin your life without warning

  • even if you feel you'd be fine if that happened to you, you could still try and avoid giving it to someone else who doesn't want their life ruined (especially a child)

  • the people who want you to think it's not a problem are the same people who say the economy is great, equality has gone too far and climate change is no biggie, so that should tell you something

  • that's it really.

@Loukas Really good piece. Interested to read your thoughts on 'community diagnosis'. My diagnosis arrived as a self-diagnosis followed by an official one; it's different for my son, who's never been able to 'mask' and whose diagnosis means his experience of 'the community' is quite different from mine (attending specialist school, having therapies etc) - it's a spectrum in more ways than one!

My manager complaining this morning that he paid £300 in NI this month but can’t get a GP appointment, and how he’d rather pay that £300 into a private health provider.

And you know what, that’s a reasonable view.

But as I pointed out to him; if he and everyone else in his tax bracket took the same decision, that would be significantly less in the pot for those who can’t afford private healthcare.

eleanorrees,
@eleanorrees@mas.to avatar

@DJDarren And if he did pay it to a private provider, he'd still expect the NHS to be there for him to take care of all the things private providers don't do because they're not directly profitable.

Is there a term (English or not) for when people make something work for them in a way that is busted as hell but charmingly effective and doesnt need to be improved? Im thinking of dragging windows around in a screen recording frame as a way of editing videos rn, but also stuff like idk using a keychain ring on a pants zipper to loop around a button and keep it up, etc. The emphasis is more on the unexpectedness or laterality of approaches than them being "bad."

"Hack" or "kludge" implies too much jankiness and is usually negative, "macgyvering" or "Jerry rigging" is too specific to using only what is on hand to do something, there is a Brazilian word "gambiarra" that I think is quite close but I don't have the cultural context to tell.

Edit: I think gambiarra is what im looking for here, thanks @catzilla !

@jonny the local term for an improvised situation-specific fix is a "one-way fuck-it clip".

Ordered some walking boots for one of the kids at 10 o'clock this morning. Since then I've had texts saying "Thank you for your order. We will be in touch as it progresses through our warehouse" and "Great news! Your order is working its way through our warehouse."

This is not nearly enough granular detail. I want texts on the half-hour saying "Your order has moved another three feet" and "We regret your order will not be progressing for the next six minutes because Tim has gone out for a fag."
