One of the things that struck me about hacking together Citadel this weekend was just how useless GitHub Copilot was.

I bought a subscription for this weekend thinking it would help me get it out faster.

But when I was working in a language I knew well (TypeScript) in a framework I'm very experienced in (React) and with a styling library that lets me move extraordinarily quick (Tailwind), it just wasn't helping. I was moving faster than Copilot could keep up.

@sam this is contingent with findings from one paper i read as well as my own experience (with a different llm though). The top use of llms in the paper was self-reported to be learning and not writing code you then commit directly. My experience was also that although llms were useless in providing me a working example of the code I was looking for (sending generic SCSI commands in python on Linux) of did show me something I did not know existed before (struct support in the ctypes module). I am pretty confident that they are (for now) of limited use for a proficient coder.

In 1974, ANSI published the Standard character set for handprinting (ANSI X3.45-1974). It proposed a uniform method of acceptable to optical character recognition technology of the day. It included only upper case letters.

It had some quirks: letter O has a tail at the top, like Q rotated 90 degrees. S has a little tail at the bottom left. U has a square base. Z has a full-width bar at mid level.

I wonder if anyone ever used it?

Take password entry. The password never turns into ••• dots — you can see every letter or number of a passcode you enter, because… only you can see it.

@miklo prawdę mówiąc argumentacja w tym artykule nie przekonuje mnie. Nie wierzę że sygnalizowane problemów we własnej organizacji wewnątrz tej organizacji będzie skuteczne. Tylko przekazanie informacji na zewnątrz uniemożliwia "zamiatania spraw pod dywan". Jeżeli RPO nie miał zasobów żeby sobie z tym radzić to trzeba było te zasoby przydzielić.

@jernej__s @ar I had seen something similar (long time ago so no screenshots tho) when I used a laptop with a flakey wlan card. On windows it would occasionally just bluescreen, Linux driver would just print some errors in dmesg, clunk clunk, reset the card and keep on working 😜​

Once libraries are nonexistent any modern fascist movement wouldn't even have to burn books, but flick one switch and they'd be remotely deleted from your Amazon Kindle or similar digital “library”.

Capitalists are already building the infrastructure to do this through DRM, so stop believing tech is apolitical - the defunding of libraries and paywalling of information are all part of this. :trantifa:
