I often think one of the best arguments (but least discussed) for individual action against climate change (like a plant-based diet, or using public transit) is that it makes you less reliant on the thing you're trying to fight, and therefore makes it easier to fight.

I do wonder how many people are staying on Twitter due to follower count alone. Having had an account for over a decade, I'd have previously estimated about 20% of my followers were dead accounts. Based on now leaving and making new accounts on other platforms, my estimate is closer to 90%.

As a blogger I've always known only like 1% of people who retweet/like a post actually clicked the link and read the article, but I assumed that was just a social media thing. Having experimented with basically every other platform, I learned it's more likely that a significant number of Twitter engagements are fake, and those that aren't don't really care enough to read your work, they'll just give you a retweet/like for appearances.

enkiusz,
@enkiusz@is-a.cat avatar

@malwaretech It wouldn't surprise me if Twitter themselves were creating fake accounts on their own platform in order to drive fake engagement to keep people convinced that they need to stay active on the site.

Even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as during the pandemic lockdown, we wouldn't achieve our climate targets.

While individuals made huge sacrifices, the system remained. This shows that individual action will not solve climate change. We need the system to change.

Anyone noticed that when folks get even a little specific about the supposed benefits of "AI" the call outs are frequently "curing disease" (sometimes specifically cancer and/or Alzheimer's) and "addressing climate change"? I'm hearing it enough to wonder where these talking points come from.

>>

enkiusz,
@enkiusz@is-a.cat avatar

@emilymbender

I think the case for "AI" helping with medical research might come from the work on protein folding--crucially a supervised machine learning project with extremely high quality data behind it--but I've never even seen the case re climate change expanded.

^^^^ this, I have seen this specific argument about AI supposedly being hugely beneficial for medicine because of alphafold.

Well it had to happen eventually. is retiring FLIP (FLoating Instrument Platform). This is an amazing piece of engineering (and soooo weird on the inside - everything pivots, so walls become floors). The to be towed out to a location, and it would literally flip, sinking most of the ship directly down to give a *very stable platform for research. Launched in 1962.

    No, guys, they have not achieved "net energy gain" (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/06/us-scientists-achieve-net-energy-gain-second-time-fusion-reaction) because you're only counting the energy IN the laser, not the energy it takes to FIRE the laser, which is hundreds, maybe thousands of times more.

    It's misleading and irresponsible to let people think we're anywhere near break-even in fusion.

    enkiusz,
    @enkiusz@is-a.cat avatar

    @cstross @robpike that's because the nif is largely about nuclear weapons research not fusion as energy source.

    I’ve tried to say this a couple of different ways over the past few weeks, but I am extremely uncomfortable with the emerging line of rhetoric on the climate left that casts strategies of adaptation to the circumstances of heating as somehow acquiescing to the extractive industries and/or their enablers in rightwing politics and the mainstream media. Adaptation really is all we have now. It’s up to us to ensure that it’s liberatory in conception and practice.
