GASP

it took 20 years, but i finally got my dream minidisc player: a Sony MZ-S1 Sports NetMD. 🤯

a neighbour down the street listed it for sale "untested" which usually means 'i tested it and it's broken'.

i gambled and bought it on sight. i practically ran home like a 9 year old just to put it through its paces, and it is perfect. 😆

the build quality is rugged and beautiful throughout. many of the surfaces are rubberized with a polymer that is still soft (and hasn't broken down). the curvilinear surfaces feel so good in the hand, makes you want to hold it. the pearlescent white finish hasn't even yellowed yet (!)

instead of a jog dial, you get a mini thumbstick which rests surprisingly well under the thumb. the deep orange display of the Sports S2 line has always been a favourite of mine - something no other company did.

i can't wait to load up SonicStage on my iMac and start transferring music :D
failing that, i'll be using WebMiniDisc to transfer music in-browser

The side of the Sony NetMD, showing a "miffy" branded minidisc ejected from the side.

@vga256 I still have two of my old MiniDisc players in a box, both have dead batteries, I believe. Shame, they'd be fun to use in my everyday.

enno,
@enno@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 This Sony MZ-N1has one of those, but it was badly corroded inside the device, so I worry there may be additional damage. I've also lost the DC power adapter for the charging station. Still plays discs with the external AA battery adapter, but without a functioning dock, I can't record new discs.

enno,
@enno@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 This Aiwa AM-F70 is a different story. I still have the charger, but it won't take a charge. Likely a dead battery. No PC dock, only records from line in. Without a way to power it up, I can't say whether it still plays or the controller dongle still works.

image/jpeg

enno,
@enno@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Correction: The Aiwa still plays fine when connected to the charger, just does not take a charge, so it is no longer a portable device. If I'm lucky, a new battery should fix this one. It's just not a great device for recording new discs, the Sony was my favorite :-(

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

@Enema_Cowboy @skaeth @bluGill @bookstodon for me, it was both Anathem and Quicksilver. Quicksilver was right in my wheelhouse, but it took me forever to read because every few pages something would send me down another Wikipedia rabbit hole. Ironically, I own the whole series in hardcover, and never even opened book 2 & 3

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in English):
“It is inevitable — the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

@lunalein @bookstodon I've definitely stopped listening to books because the narrator was bad, or putting me to sleep. In fiction, I also try to avoid the Graphic Audio style "a movie in your mind" productions, and prefer either a single narrator doing all the characters, or at most two. How to lose the time war was a good example of that done well.

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The notification page makes it sound like they added a new privacy feature, but in actuality they automatically enrolled you into their tracking system and you have to go and manually opt out.
