On the topic of brakes. It's also been my experience that disk brake pads will need to be replaced each year. I can afford it but I can't help but think about regen braking whenever I see the bill. I understand why it isn't really used, but I still wish there were an option.

"The ultimate test to prove what cars have done to the American psyche only requires that you walk out your front door. Take a photo with your phone. Now highlight in red the places in which it would be fully legal for a car to strike and kill you. Now highlight in yellow the places in which a car could strike and kill you and you would have to make a legal case that it was not your fault. Now highlight in green places where you believe you are safe from cars." - Dan Sheehan #fuckcars

The contrast with failed plans like 's seems pretty basic: "They said: 'You as provider of the road transport system are no longer allowed to kill people on that mass level that you've done'

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240517-vision-zero-how-europe-cut-the-number-of-people-dying-on-its-roads

tk,

@enobacon This thought often comes to mind: "If driving is so 'easy', then why are there so many car crashes each year?"

Always stop for pedestrians. Because it may be your workplace’s IT guy trying to cross the street. And they may see you stop and then remember to sign-off on your new work laptop.

Dual-motor ebike report: Temperature of rotors + motor after 1 mile of steep descent.

Bike: R&M Packster 40 cargo e-bike
Total weight: 330 pounds (bike + passenger + rider + cargo)

Braking:
front wheel: 70% regenerative braking / 30% rotor braking
rear wheel: 100% rotor braking

Front rotor: 91F (warm but not too hot)
Motor: 95F (warm but not too hot)

Rear rotor: 211F(!) (don't touch!)

Conclusion: Regenerative braking saves a lot of wear and tear on rotor brakes.

To all the supporters of universal basic income out there, what happened to make you support it even more after you already came to support it?

For me it was learning the many dirty details of traditional welfare benefits and how programs like TANF are designed and treat people, and how many people in need they don't help.

Wild how it took so long to do something so simple. Not that I long to visit the byward Market but Majors Hill or Rideau Falls were rarely on the list of destinations if this was the direction of travel. But this makes basic access possible especially with the bridge open and the new NCC lookout on the +50% complete?? status

And the last question (hope it's okay that this ended up being a Q8, @trouble)

Q8. What's the most recent thing you bought/added to your bike? Or clothing, or any cycling related thing. Anything new or fun?

@ascentale @trouble A8. Uhhhhhh I added a bubble machine on the back of my bike trailer. 🫣🚲🫧 My friend Molly had one and I asked her about it. It was very popular at and at ! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019QDNC92

A good enough install of the Grin All-Axle v3 on a Tern GSD v2. The motor controller tucked snugly under the rack, excess wiring is spiraled around whatever is handy. The battery looks ridiculous but will do until I order something meant for this bike. Adding an all throttle system to an all pedelec e-bike feels very peanut butter and chocolate.

I'm looking to contract with a consultant to make a Drupal 7 site as reliable and bug-free as possible for the next 6 months while another team (already in contract) builds its Wordpress replacement.

(Context: I'm the IT Manager at a research nonprofit)

Recommendations? Hoping for someone with integrity, who has suitable Drupal skills, who works well remotely, and who is OK with the fact that this is a relatively small bugfix/maintenance gig - we're not going to build anew on Drupal.

The power requirements for an air resistance of 0.5 and frontal area of about half a square meter are 117 million horsepower to go this speed.
For reference, I can produce 1.2 horsepower for about 4 seconds max on a good day.
