The same Republicans sneering at queer people for supporting Palestinian human rights are the ones who push bills and laws in the United States to treat queer people precisely the way Republicans falsely believe all Arabs treat queer people. Also: anti-gay law in Palestine was made by white people.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@VPS_Reports Go give it a try. Go try a gay pride March in Gaza city. Then try it out in Tehran. I condemn republicans for their stance on LGBT rights, but I condemn Hamas and Iran 10x as much.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@redrozalia @VPS_Reports No, not for having the same opinion. For having numerous policies that are chilling and retrograde. I condemn Iran for its creepy public comments that sound like the ramblings of a serial killer. And for the taking of American hostages. And jailing and torturing women for not wearing hijabs. And their Orwellian morality police.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@redrozalia @VPS_Reports I condemn Iran for their unelected supreme leader who enthusiastically commingles mosque and state, and in Orwellian fashion disallows any criticism or disagreement with him.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@redrozalia @VPS_Reports I condemn Iran's sponsorship of terrorist organizations around the world and its cheerleading of terrorist attacks.

@timnitGebru When Ukraine was attacked, people put up Ukrainian flags. When Israel is attacked, it's a both sides issue.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@nev @timnitGebru It is amazing how people can take the opportunity to rally around Hamas at their most depraved, most anti-Semitic, most violent. It's like cheering on Al-Qaeda after 9/11. It is chilling.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@tob @timnitGebru Yes something very different: in Israel, it's mostly Jews- ick, they were asking for it. In Ukraine, a palatable number.

You never need to apologize for:
•Condemning killing of civilians
•Condemning killing of civilians as a response to killing civilians
•Condemning war crimes no matter the perpetrator
•Needing time & space to center yourself before speaking

This is how we build sustainable peace & justice for all people.

escarpment,
@escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

@QasimRashid What we need now is for non-Jewish allies to say "I stand with Israel." To hang Israeli flags outside their windows and show it is safe somewhere in this world to be Jewish- that we aren't all going to be hauled away to gas chambers tomorrow.

    @Teri_Kanefield It was so nice to hear Biden's full throated support of Israel. None of this ridiculous equivocation and both sides-ism that so many people fall into.

    I have heard so many "buts" when people half heartedly denounce this attack. Unbelievable to see people rallying for Palestine after this event, as if directly endorsing the attack.

    A genocide is unfolding with leaders clearly communicating their intentions and green lit by“international community”. Announcing a siege of 2M already besieged people, with the prime minister live tweeting bombing residential buildings, “human animals.” The West’s hypocrisy knows no bounds.

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @timnitGebru It is horrific indeed. My hope, if it is possible to have hope in this situation, is that Israel completely dismantles the Hamas regime and there is some sort of Marshall plan for Gaza.

    Gaza is currently in a death spiral of poverty, delusion, hatred, violence, and anti-semitism.

    They need governance that doesn't spend all time and money on rockets and training children to commit violence against Jewish people.

    escarpment, to random
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    It is tragic that modern states have to establish boundaries which, when violated, they must commit atrocities. But that apparently is necessary in the face of brazen enemies. For example, NATO. Russia needs to know that if they attack a single square foot of NATO soil, NATO has no choice but to retaliate with devastating force. The policy has to be automatic. It has to be "you wouldn't dare do something so stupid and self-destructive, would you?"

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    So it is with Israel. Hamas already knew that slaughtering and kidnapping Israeli citizens would be met with devastating force. The deterrent has to be automatic. They did something so stupid and self-destructive that can only end with the complete dismantling of the Hamas regime and total surrender.

Thousands of children now depend on the water bottle for their lives, and would become refugees if the water bottle were returned to the mere 100s of ancestors of the student from whom you took the water bottle from. The children who now depend on the water bottle did nothing wrong and committed no crime.

    Fuck Hamas. Fuck the far-right of Israel. Fuck Israel’s occupation and apartheid against Palestine. Fuck genocidal ultranationalists of all varieties. And fuck anyone salivating with bloodlust against Palestinian and Israeli civilians.

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @VPS_Reports I appreciate the sentiment but this is a false equivalence between the far-right of Israel and Hamas. Hamas's aim is the slaughter and torment of as many Jewish people as possible. Hamas is not a friend of the Western left. Hamas is a religious fundamentalist and extremist organization founded on anti-semitism.

    What do you do with people so deluded by extremism that they pose a violent threat to innocent people? They certainly can't be reasoned with.

    TonyStark, to random
    @TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

    The actions of Hamas against civilians are indefensible. But it is also fact that Netanyahu uses his own indefensible techniques to get an extreme reaction from Palestinian extremist groups, and then uses that as an excuse for cataclysmic Armageddon against all Palestinians. It is a pattern that has repeated over and over.

    Who suffers most? Civilians on both sides.

    For years, Netanyahu propped up Hamas. Now it's blown up in our faces | The Times of Israel-

    @TonyStark I wish for once someone could say "the actions of Hamas are indefensible" without a "but" that immediately attempts to defend these allegedly indefensible actions.

    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @TonyStark I don't love oligarchs so not sure what you're misinterpreting.

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @TonyStark Fair enough. I suppose your "but" in this case, as you suggest, is "but I also condemn Netanyahu." So your "but" is better than some of the other "buts" I've seen... perhaps I was too quick on the trigger. Nevertheless, you could still even interpret this opinion as, "well, they had it coming for supporting their leader. Should have picked a different president and this wouldn't have happened to them."

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @TonyStark I'm also a Jewish person. I don't love Netanyahu either, though I'm often surprised at how reasonable he sounds compared with the lunacy of the right wing in the US.

    I just generally have my hackles up because events like this reveal how many of our neighbors would probably do nothing or quietly cheer if they started going door to door rounding us up.

    Are0h, to random

    If we're going to call Hamas a terrorist organization, then we have to do the same for the Israeli government because they have been engaging in enforcing a brutal apartheid state for a very long time.

    No, it doesn't justify what happened, but it gives the situation context.

    And the history of that context is how we got here.

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @Are0h If it doesn't justify it, why mention it? You could just say, "Nothing justifies firing thousands of rockets at civilians then going house to house killing civilians and taking hostages." But for some reason everyone is very quick to say some form of "this attack is justified."

    Another teacher asked me an interesting question today. "What do you think about this idea of replacing calculus with statistics. After all statistics is more useful."

    That's probably true on the surface, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of the "replace calc with stats" craze... even as I lament the poor understanding many people have of stats. It's obvious we need more education on interpreting datasets and visualizations.

    But, there is a subtext to this argument I dislike. 1/

    escarpment,
    @escarpment@mastodon.online avatar

    @futurebird Well put. I also wonder if there's room for linear algebra. I don't think linear algebra is any "harder" than calculus, and it seems to gain more relevance all the time in our digital world. For me at least, linear algebra introduced an element of "beauty" to math which I hadn't appreciated before. It's abstract in a way that taught me, at least, why abstractions are important: because they help you generalize, for example from 3 dimensions to 100 dimensions.
