Every few days I hit an odd key combo that kills all the terminals I have open in several desktops and I don't know what it is. I'm not even in a terminal at the time! 😱

I have lots of terminals open that I set up every day so this is mildly annoying [editor: native English speaker there]

It's some combo of Ctrl/Shift/Alt and maybe tab or a nearby key.

@happyborg Oh dear! Do you remember what you're usually trying to press as far as key combinations go when that happens? I tried to reproduce this and all I managed to do was move terminals from one workspace to another

Edit: Could it be Ctrl+Shift+Q?

@liztai I pretty much fill up my time with other things and turn to social media when I feel like engaging instead of just scrolling. I haven't gotten around to using filters and further curation but that's a great idea

Have learned 100/1000 Chinese characters using mnemonics and memory palace techniques :). Apps I'm using to do this: Tofu Learn to write the characters and Du Chinese as a graded reader.

@liztai Never got a grasp on memory palace techniques but I learned a few characters by flipping through a book meant for teaching Chinese to children by sorta "seeing" the things some of the characters represent...I definitely want to learn the language so I might as well pick up those techniques as I go about it :D

@thunderbird In my last job the radio was playing all the time and I learned to tune it out after a while. Personally I only listen to music when it's lighter work and not too focus-intensive. I find instrumentals distracting as well because I hear the names of the notes as they play so I'll have this beautiful track playing and my mind will be like "E F# G# E B G F#" in the background.

@cassidy I like this a lot! I wonder if there's a problem on my end but the website shows a little different on my machine (on two separate browsers) and the contrast between some text and the background seems softer: The contrast ratio seems to be 2:26:1

Bye bye Obsidian - it’s not you, it’s me.

In the end, partly because I’m pretty invested in the Apple ecosystem, Obsidian just didn’t do it for me for personal notes. I think because it tried to span from “quick notes” to “complete documents” it just never felt comfortable for, well, note taking.

The attraction of using Markdown didn’t do it either: if I’m thinking Markdown I’ve in my IDE, writing raw Markdown

Still in two minds about using this on the work laptop though.

@thebellman After ages of trying to get used to Obsidian, Notion, and all the cool digital note-taking stuff, I ended up going back to taking notes on paper - or annotating slide decks on notability...recently started using Obsidian to link them together in a way but that workflow is a bit clunky

@harish that’s a good idea! My work notes stayed at the office since they were mostly along the lines of “Call Mr.A at 2pm” but I have a stack of scrap notebooks for day-to-day capture! Grocery lists, birthdays etc. I don’t really journal in the traditional sense so notebooks are my go-to for writing down non-linear thoughts

I was testing something in an Ubuntu VM and I am pretty shocked at how inaccessible Ubuntu’s new “App Center” is. It does not support the system High Contrast or disable overlay scrollbars settings at all.

Screen reading hardly works; it only speaks what’s focused but misses most of the app copy. It reads things out of order or with generic names (“push button”), making no sense.

Keyboard navigation is flaky, with many elements not showing a focus style and some not navigable at all.

@cassidy It feels like it's not ready yet tbh - I think the lighter font weight on the newer iteration of the ubuntu font is a bit harder to see as well 😬
I'm very interested in how this open-source ux stuff is done, I'd like to learn more about it so I can lend a hand!
