Today's trip is Lava Beds national monument, another place I have been meaning to visit for over a decade. It wasn't even on my itinerary for this trip, I just realized last night that my motel was half an hour away from it.

@seldo it’s amazing! Have a great time and bring a jacket (some of those deep caves get mighty cold)!!

Mastodon is great, the only thing I miss on this app is quote posts. I know they have a bad rap bc of Twitter, but every major social network has this functionality for a reason (Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook, IG). As a journalist, I’d love to add commentary and amplify great info, build on ppl’s points, etc. You just can’t do that the same wait with replies! Is there any chance we might get them on here?

@exkclamation@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz I’ve been using Re:Toot (iOS app) as a substitute for quote toots and it seems to be a decent workaround…

This week for #Fossilfriday we have another #Guess that #Lego #Fossil.

This one I would rate as fairly easy. This is theropod is famous for being bizarre at best.

Reminder: hide your answer behind a CW. This will allow others to guess without a hint. I will post the answer tomorrow (and to anyone who guesses correctly).

This body was designed by Ambrosino, instructions can be found here - https://tinyurl.com/2pcc9786

Here is an updated image of all the different fossils I have made.
You can find most of them on
Only about a dozen or so are designed by me. About 1/3rd of the others are modified by me into a new species. The rest come from all over the internet.

I just learned that a style of welding is called "Fluxcore" and now I want nothing more than to turn that into a music genre.

@gabek OOH(!) …have you heard the band Igorrr?

“Fluxcore” seems like a great term to describe their style! (fusing together hardcore metal with other complimentary-but-disparate music genres)

    In 1958, fragments of a skull were found by Wann Langston Jr in the Foremost Formation. These fragments went into storage in the Canadian Museum of Nature.

    In 2003, David C. Evans and Michael J. Ryan rediscovered the specimens and in 2009 they decided to do a more in depth study of the specimen.

    In 2012, Ryan, Evans, and Kieran M. Sheppard described the new species species, naming it Xenoceratops foremostensis.

    @TheDinosaurDave xenoceratops is such a great name! It’s always so curious to me how they could go from random fragments to a full constructed fossil. Pretty amazing stuff!

    exkclamation,
    @exkclamation@mastodon.social avatar

    @TheDinosaurDave @mike it always seems so impossible, like piecing together an entire jigsaw with only a few puzzle pieces (or parts of pieces). I can see why things would change and get reclassified as they discover more samples too!

    The first fossil of Elasmosaurus was found by Edward Drinker Cope in 1867. He named it Elasmosaurus platyurus.

    Originally Cope reconstructed Elasmosaurus with its head at the end of its tail, something Marsh did not let him hear the end of.

    Living around 80 million years ago, and growing to around 10 meters in length, Elasmosaurus was one of the largest Plesiosauria.

    Its possible that Elasmosaurus used gastroliths to help with digestion
