Here's a mystery I just remembered: years ago, a relative of mine was engaging as a vendor, and expressed concerns about the solution's ability to support Quebec and the rest of Canada at the same time.

"Oh, we know Quebec, " was the reply. "They speak French there, and use Swiss francs as currency."

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

Years after that, I was working for a dot-com and had as a client. They provided access to a customer database they had as part of the project I was working on, and which people at my company were supposed to data enter into.

I was the trainer, and so of course I tested the UI. Every time I entered a test customer with a residence in Quebec... the currency would automatically switch to Swiss francs.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

Of course I reported the bug (which took some demoing to prove, because even the people were surprised about it).

Every once in a while I Google about it, but I've never got to the bottom of it, or found out how widespread it was at MS.

It's one hell of a wrong requirement, though, and it must have not only slipped through, but propagated, and stayed for a long time.

breadandcircuses, to climate

It's not an excuse, and China should be condemned for relying so heavily on coal as a power source.

BUT — it's also important to remember what the country is doing with all that power. A large part of it supports the manufacturing and shipping of cheap products to satisfy the insanely high demand of consumers in the US, Canada, and Europe. We can't require the Chinese to change their ways unless we're willing to change ours first.

"China approves coal power surge despite emissions pledge"

China has approved a major surge in coal power so far this year, prioritising energy supply over its pledge to reduce emissions from fossil fuels, Greenpeace said Monday.

The world's second-largest economy is also its biggest emitter of the greenhouse gases driving climate change, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), and China's emissions pledges are seen as essential to keeping global temperature rise well below two degrees Celsius.

China relied on coal for nearly 60% of its electricity last year.

The push for more coal plants "risks climate disasters... and locking us into a high-carbon pathway," Greenpeace campaigner Xie Wenwen said. "The 2022 coal boom has clearly continued into this year."

@costrike @breadandcircuses Plus we need to stop buying cheap quality shit that will fall apart quickly. It's a false economy, and even without hurting the planet (but it is) it's hurting us.

If "moist" is too annoying of a word to use, then how are we supposed to compliment cake?

@designthinkingcomic I totally agree. I also have a little voice in my head reminding me that switching costs for apps in that category should not be so high.

so when cats play with the wand toy... do they think they're playing with it? or are they swatting that shit away and we just decided they think it's fun.

@bunnyhero Whoever did the sound design on the Roomba is freaking brilliant. They've turned a machine into this little creature that loves to do one of my most detested chores.

We're going to have a Knowledge day for our department (a sub department of a very large IT dept), and they're taking suggestions of topics and offers to hold a session or panel right now. They have a category called tips&tricks and my boss is going to suggest a knitting for mindfulness talk, and I kinda want to send in a pitch for a workshop about mending [clothes].
I'm not a mending expert, but I can talk about why mend, and teach basics (a lot of people can't sew in a button), and...

Hmm?

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@Silhelm I went to a webinar on reusing t-shirts (no recording, sadly). They make quick market bags: cut off the sleeves, sew up the bottom, cut the neck into a bigger scoop and you've got a shopping bag. Sew on one or both sleeves (with some trimming) and you've got patch pockets. If you place one of the sleeve/pockets on the inside, to the side, you can stuff the bag into the pocket for ease of carrying.

@Silhelm This looks like a good collection of options to me (including a no-sew option) https://thethingswellmake.com/recycled-t-shirt-bags-review-of-7-ways/

Additional note to the video: at the time the Titanic went down, the precursor to the was frequented by rich (ish) people. Streetcar tickets were found in the wreckage from 2nd class. was on the right track (heh) once.

@DanielMenjivar @xibee Lately I've been watching Don Kim's sewing videos because of exactly this. No narrative, just the odd title saying what he's building in that segment in Korean and English, with dimensions in cm.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@xibee @DanielMenjivar Current day, although some of it would be useful for historical things. Mostly he makes bags out of old clothes, especially old jeans. Sometimes patchwork geometry is involved. The average video length is 15 minutes.

@xibee @DanielMenjivar No, but if you want to see someone make a zip double welt pocket with the absolute bare minimum of pins, he's your guy.

@StryderNotavi @indrora @jhilden @mcc It would be interesting (can't think of a better word) to see just how much ChatGPT has affected the "content by the yard" industry.

I know I got a weird email the other day about an old blog post (yes, I still keep a blog, no, no-one ever reads it, and that's okay), suggesting a related topic. It might have been a blandly-writing human, or it may have been an AI.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@benjaminhollon @jhilden Sure they tested it. It worked -- it left a review with a star rating.

The better question is if the person who hired out to get the scripting done for the review generation robot ever double-tested the review, or if they just took the contractor's demo on faith.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@benjaminhollon @bornach @jhilden Of those writing fake reviews, really.

There are a lot of content farms, sock puppet armies, and fake review generators which can now (probably have) laid off a lot of people. From a reading standpoint, it's both annoying and funny. But from a jobs standpoint, it is going to mean something.

"A home without books is like a tree without birds."

@GrahamDowns No, in that trees can get along just fine without birds. Houses without books are just shelter.

eyrea,

@hayesstw @GrahamDowns Depends on the tree. Some birds damage trees, so it's a wash.

@gemelliz @iamdavidmiller I just realized -- it's like the 407, except on a single plot of land instead of a whole highway. Public land, foreign ownership, no popular support, the whole thing.

@normsworld It'll be like the SkyDome. Some other corporation will buy it for much less money than the original cost, and it'll gradually become less and less publicly accessible.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@gemelliz @normsworld To me, it doesn't matter if it's a spa or a casino. The point is, the space is going from a family-oriented park with educational exhibits and art venues to a privatised space with far fewer reasons to visit. Spa, casino, supermarket... it doesn't matter.
