This morning I found out 76% of women report using #LinkedIn less due to harassment and “tinder-like messages”.

WTF

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@waynedixon @aronow Some people (in this case, some men) just see contact opportunities and pay no attention to context.

I used to belong to an in-person writer's group. These two guys (friends) showed up and attended a few meetings. They never had work to critique, and never contributed feedback.

So we asked them how we could make them more comfortable, and they confessed they were there to find dates. We had to explain it really was a writer's group.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@waynedixon @aronow Not that couples have never met through a writer's group, just... not like that.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@aronow @waynedixon Oh yeah -- after all, what do people recommend if you're not comfortable on dating apps? Find a group of people with similar interests to you!

But that means, you know, participating. And actually having that interest.

IIRC, these fellows assumed a writer's group would be full of desperate single women. It was led by a married woman (and indie publisher) who specialised in erotica, but left the group open to all genres. Go figure.

Home Investment tip of the day: Buy a Cast Iron Skillet.
A basic quality nonstick pan will last you about 1-2 years if you are not particularly careful (99% of households are not careful enough). A cast iron skillet lasts you about 100 years in whatever conditions. It doesn't cost much more either. That is REAL value for money.

@noctarius2k @Dutchinvestor If anyone has tips on how to season said pan without setting off my apartment building's smoke detectors, I'd love to hear them. I've bought two cast iron pans over the years, and were never able to season them to usefulness.

eyrea,

@noctarius2k @Dutchinvestor My smoke detector is in between the kitchen and the windows 🙃

I do have a hood fan, but it was... insufficient last time I tried.

Jesus: impossible to kill, reproduced asexually. Jesus is canonically a fungus. Clearly the part the Romans crucified was a fruiting body of some kind, leaving the bulk of the organism below ground, safe and secure. And every Easter, we find Jesus' multi-colored spores hidden in dark places. The rabbits tried to warn us. But now it's too late. He's metastasized across the whole planet. Soon enough, he will come again, and when he does, no cross in the world will be big enough to keep him at bay.

Twilight Zone music intensifies

Doesn't anyone read The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross anymore? There's an entire book about Christianity as a mushroom drug cult.

@MostlyHarmless I always did think that between Batgirl and the Commissioner, the Gordon family came out better than the Waynes overall.

German is full of tales of evil, prideful nobles who were eventually punished for their sins.

So why is modern media - starting with , and moving on from there - so full of pro- propaganda instead? Lots of "Just Kings", "Plucky Princesses", and so forth. Why is the implication in media nowadays that being exalted by the circumstances of your birth is likely to make you a good person? Instead of being totally oblivious to your own class privilege - and that's probably the best case!

I wonder if anyone has done any scientific research on all these "pro-monarchy" narratives in modern media, and how they came into existence.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@cstross @juergen_hubert My history teacher (in Canada) posited just that.

He said the American Revolution was peculiar for two reasons: one, what you just described, and two, that it stopped. Most national revolutions have successive revolutions after them. The January 6 attempted coup is the closest I know of.

If it's not illegal it's not graffiti. Otherwise it's just a sparkling mural.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@futurebird There was a by-law passed which made graffiti the building owner's problem -- they had to clean it off within X days of receiving a notice about it or face a fine.

So a local business owner hired some high school students and had a mural painted on the wall of her building that attracted graffiti.

Then she got a notice because the local counselor decided the mural was graffiti.

Sigh.

I have been struggling to help my sister navigate a simple spreadsheet. She has been handwriting lists and sending them to me in the mail to help her with her job. I decided it would be so much easier to share a spreadsheet so I could help her in real time.
Now I'm not so sure.
I feel sorry for both of us because I was running out of descriptive words and ways to help her learn something I could do in my sleep.
My grandkids are so good at tech support for old people I finally had one of them walk her through it. I told the grandkids they should start a rent a grandson side hustle. My sister can't be the only one with scary limited computer skills.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@PricklyPam @NorcalGma2 The truth is, many personal computer pioneers have already passed away from old age.

I have two relatives in their 70s who regularly complain about the lack of computer literacy in their peers. One worked with UNIX his whole career. The other learned HTML and multimedia design after she retired, just because she always wanted to know about them.

It's not being old. Your sister might be having real difficulties, but it's not from her age.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@NorcalGma2 @PricklyPam I have a cousin who is younger than I am, and who is about the same as your sister -- never wanted anything to do with computers. She's only middle-aged.

It's not age. It may well be something else, but it's not age.

If it's bothering you, then most likely you did a good job teaching. Speaking as a former professional teacher, sometimes it's hard to find the right approach with a given individual.

I just made the best Green Goddess dressing I've ever made (sadly, my 20 year + stick blender died during the making of). I used chives, basil, and cilantro for the herbs. It was so tasty and cooling.

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mixed fresh herbs
1 tbl lemon juice
1 tbl white wine vinegar
1 tsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp sesame seed oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Put all ingredients in a container (I used a measuring cup). Blend and enjoy.
