graphics research lifehack: you can cut out a ton of paywall scams and inscrutable academic wankery by excluding "we present" from your searches

@klara @aeva yeah Kagi is lost too. I still have hopes for stract, which you could in theory even host yourself

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

@klara @aeva I haven’t tested it sufficiently, but it is not decentralized, probably exactly for these reasons and the suggest not everyone run their own crawler. They do have their own crawler, so it’s not just an amalgamation of bing or google. They have f e optics which are similar to kagi lenses to tailor your search. While centralized is a failure point it makes sense for this, and at least code-wise they are more open then kagi.

None of the various neofetch successors seem to report the network wire speed on my macbook, but they almost all do on my linux machines. Is there an easy way to figure out why this is without reading tens of thousands of lines of bash

fl0_id,

@glyph I guess macOS is doing sth weird? Like most Unix utilities not properly working with macos‘ reporting of disk space for volumes etc…

I'm looking at @moodeaudio to replace my system with, and there's two questions I can't quite find the answers to:

  1. Does it support rebroadcasting a line-in audio source for multi-room? That'd be enough to get my TV audio to the other rooms.

  2. I have a fairly powerful NAS I can run the "main" instance on and would just need the actual RPis as audio relays. Is that topology somehow supported?

@larsmb I found roon quite interesting, though it’s probably not fully foss and not sure if it meets your needs. https://roon.app/de/downloads

Ich suche eine für:

  • etwa 1,5TB Daten,
  • etwa 1500 Benutzer,
  • Nutzer sollen selbst Daten hoch/runter laden können,
  • idealerweise Webclient,
  • einfache Registrierung,
  • skalierbar.

Bin grade ein bisschen überfragt.

My annual plea for a thing: I want a type 1 hypervisor that just has a small isolated VM and then passes through the rest of the hardware to the main VM which runs Linux. The small VM is intended to be used to run small pieces of code that the main OS should not be able to interfere with. Does such a thing exist? (Think Xen, but with a Dom0 that can't see into DomUs)

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

@mjg59 @hyc does one know how it manages this? Does it just pretend?

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

@mjg59 @hyc sure, but I just meant if the hv can technically see into all guests, who enforces the rules for security vm? The cpu or the hv or both? If the hv, this is likely more easily overridden.

The Land Before Google

The Dot com boom. Gold rush! Microsoft is king of the Desktop but AWOL on the web. Downloads are sooo slow. In NZ 28k was typical if you had it at all (today it's 50000k). People still buy print but mainly for the CD. Search was terrible, their home pages were ad-ridden chaotic mess. Some people used Copernic Agent to do multiple searches on Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, Altavista, Compuserve (link if you miss the old internet https://www.compuserve.com/), /1

@ljrk what is that? From JP?

ljrk, to random
@ljrk@todon.eu avatar

Just did some research on light philosophy books to get someone off of the "philosophy" offered by the likes of Richard David Precht ans Jordan Peterson. And I noticed that while I love philosophy, most literature is – of course – mostly considering society as a whole and less focused on self improvement. Even if self improvement is a topic it of course only exists within the context of society.

And indeed most bigger philosophical issues are actually rooted in society (at least in my view). Unfortunately that means that most literature that I'd recommend in that regard, while interesting and inspiring fight against the system ... ultimately isn't that helpful to people struggling to find their place in a system that's fucked up beyond recognition.

So you can either read JP and consider all issues as problems of the individual, or actually fight power struggles but live in existential despair. Which, yes, matches a lot of philosophers.

Maybe we need some self-help books that teach how to be egoistically content with oneself with proper self-care when appropriate without lying about the state of the world as it is. This huge gap needs to be closed, otherwise all activists are just perm burned out (hi, lol!).

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

@ljrk books like that probably fall less into philosophy, but more into psychology I guess. There is one or two that I know that might fit, but they don’t particularly address activism

I'm looking for resources, experiences, conversations, books and papers on revenue models for open source software, as I'm releasing a product that needs to be under GPLv3.

I'm specifically looking into monthly and annual donations and "sponsor a feature" sort of deals on top of service contracts.

There's already interest, so it's more about defining the methods rather than this being possible or not.
