Judge grants a party permission to file overlength briefs. Judge doesn't set a new page limit.

Five months after the motion is fully briefed, the judge denies the motion because he thinks the briefs are too long.

a couple of years ago on twitter I asked why man pages don't have examples and had a surprisingly interesting discussion https://twitter.com/b0rk/status/1427308140916363269

I learned that:

  • GNU tools intentionally left examples out of man pages, because the idea was that the examples were in the "info" pages instead (which I never heard of it in ~15 years of using Linux, apparently it’s am emacs thing)
  • BSD man pages do tend to have examples (for example man grep on Mac OS has some examples, on Linux it doesn't)

@ErikJonker@mastodon.social avatar

For those of you who are interested in statistics, this is a five-sigma event. So it's five standard deviations beyond the mean. Which means that if nothing had changed, we'd expect to see a winter like this about once every 7.5 million years."It's gobsmacking."

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-24/antarctic-sea-ice-levels-nosedive-five-sigma-event/102635204?utm_source=abc_news_web&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_web

@ErikJonker is there a good explanation of this somewhere? I searched for it but the explanation on quota for example said it would not be a good explanation of extreme events. https://www.quora.com/What-does-it-mean-when-something-is-described-as-a-six-sigma-event

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

fl0_id,
@fl0_id@mastodon.social avatar

Sometimes I wonder why academics aren't stampeding from corporate social media to Mastodon, and then I remember: these are the same people that give corporations their work for free to be sold back to them at extortionate prices, and then measure their value on how often they do that.

Political geniuses they are not.

@john and they are often captive in an even weirder amalgam of capitalism, clout chasing and ideally also pursuit of knowledge

Weil man will.

@alper @tante more broken then elsewhere? I mean sure it’s broken, but it is broken in one way or another in many places I’ve lived. And you mentioned linke as a party, but maybe you also meant linke as a societal group, not just limited to a party? As there is often the argument that leftist groups splinter too easily, is that you meant?

Getting back from 7 weeks of travel means I need to be adulting really hard. Today (arrived home around 7ish):

  • put veranda furniture out
  • pump up everyday bike
  • groceries I
  • dinner (see below, I was SO missing salads)
  • deinfect earth for new plants in oven
  • put plants back
  • water all plants
  • find out which battery the fire alarm needs

Bed now and let's see how much I'll be able to do tomorrow given the 32°C forecast 😭
