I guess I’m “middle aged” now even though I still feel like I’m 25 inside my brain. I’m a life long techie and geek that used to be a Systems Engineer for the Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas websites.

@gatewayy is my test account for exploring Calckey. My self hosting of the application are not going as well as I would like. I'm taking a break from that project but still want to check things out.

    Why is Bluesky suddenly “trending”? Did they open up a bunch of spots?

    I think the thing that makes me feel nostalgic about this era is two things. One, the fact that prebuilts were "unique" and had more quality in general. They are still IBM clones, but each computer was built differently. Nowadays all computers are just the same, but with different specs. Some have more RAM, others have less. Some have a decent GPU, others don't even have a GPU (they use an iGPU), or have a crappy chinese knock off GPU that is not what is advertised. They all suck.

    And the other thing is the fact that computer stores were filled with tons of products. Specially software. Can you imagine going to a store and buying software physically? Yeah, that's how things used to work back then. And they had accessories, and consumables, wires, videogames...

    Modern computer stores are pretty much empty. And their business model relies in either selling other stuff (like in tech stores, where the computer section is now a small section with a couple of prebuilts) or just tech support for companies and individuals (those are mostly empty, with some "props" that nobody will buy just to fill the windows, and they are only there to sell components (if they even have them in stock), or take your computer for repair).

    Having lived through those times, yes I can imagine it. 😝

    @enigmatico@mk.absturztau.be avatar

    This is how I remember computer stores. A bunch of computers with their screensavers. Normally it would be the text marquee screensaver, with a text describing the specifications of the computer.

    To be fair, I know some stores still do that nowadays. Normally tech stores that sell prebuilt computers. But naturally they don't have screensavers anymore and it's usually just the login screen, or a video, or nothing at all (it's turn off). And it's very rare to find computer stores still alive in this era that sell prebuilts and actually showcase them outside.

    If anything, it will be "props" just to fill the window and they will be turn off.

    @chockenberry Every demo seemed highly staged. I suspect the device is a early alpha and is basically a minimally viable product. I will admit that I am not a hardware focused engineer so maybe it is all possible, but I am pretty skeptical. It will be interesting to see how it develops and if it ever makes it to market.
