Lake Bonney hut in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica.

My personal favorite camp on the continent. Fashioned out of a “jamesway” that was used in the Korean War. It’s a little more gritty and DIY than other camps, which gives it its charm and explains why I love it.

Help me #Mosstodon and #lichensubscribe folks…

I thought I had read some article a while back (within last 5 years?) that was challenging the concept of lichen as a “pioneer species” for breaking down bare rock.

Am I just imagining this?

Web folks: is there an easy-to-use, not super expensive, service that provides public member directories?

E.g. A society wants to easily manage a public directory of their hundreds of members.

Bonus if it integrates into Squarespace easily.

“This book is for anyone who loves science fiction but can’t help sometimes asking, ‘Wait, could they really do that?’ ...with commentary from experts on space technology, astrophysics, aliens, ...it’s a fascinating resource for curious minds.”

If you're someone who is interested in exploring the microscopic world, no matter your background, I recommend joining the San Francisco Microscopical Society as a member ($12/year).

No matter where you live, you get an online community of folks to geek out with and ask questions to, and if you're in the Bay Area, there are weekly events.

If you join by December 15th, you'll get a free Nikon Small World calendar to kick off your year of exploration: https://sfmicrosociety.org/join

Hey friends!

Do you have friends/family who love geeking out about space operas + sci-fi?

Gift them a copy of my book that just came out this year!

Astronaut Mae Jemison wrote the foreword. It’s about the science behind the tropes - from surviving black holes to cloning + more.

so I was excited to get a package from Amazon today with @arielwaldman ;s new book Out There The Science Behind Sci-Fi Film and TV which I had preordered months ago. But Amazon managed to ship me a brand new but mangled copy (bottom of the spine is crushed bending nearly every page of the book). So alas, it will get returned tomorrow & a replacement shipped so it will be a few days before I can read it. One of my son's heroes is Mae Jemison who wrote the intro!

The Now: Editing footage of a rarely seen Antarctic rotifer that I found living inside a glacier a few months ago.

I nicknamed it "rotifer with pointy sides" before learning which species it was. You can watch the video of this lil' friend at https://youtu.be/5qgrHvUkVVc #antarctica #micro

(Shot in 4k but YouTube is taking its sweet time uploading the higher res versions right now)

Rotifers are the smallest animals on the planet, along with tardigrades and nematodes.

They're famous for their Roomba-like head that they use to sweep in food.

You can find them all across the planet, including this one that lived embedded in a glacier in Antarctica.

It has been 6 months since I returned from #Antarctica, where I filmed an entirely self-shot #documentary.

Today, I'm excited to share that I've released a sneak peek of my film, along with a talk that I recently gave to National Geographic: https://www.patreon.com/posts/sneak-peek-of-my-87450585
