in something like a day my headmate went from "this random spool of [natural, non-CF] nylon" to "able to produce nylon parts with fusion so good that my gf has spent the better part of a night bending the [flat] part over and over trying to break it with as much vigor and force as she could and she only got one tiny part of it to delaminate a little after literal hours and hours of it"

check out this surface finish. what the heck

grumpybozo,
@grumpybozo@toad.social avatar

@whitequark Based solely on antique polymer chemistry and plastics molding knowledge, I would guess that the “sorcery” is the nylon. I would think that it would be the ideal material for that sort of application.

A lot of times when I talk about happiness to others it's as though we're speaking different languages, because so many people think of happiness as a mood, a transient reaction to a certain stimulus, instead of a default state.

Of course bad stuff makes us react badly, and good stuff makes us react with cheer. But when that passes, what's underneath it? What do you default to? And why?

grumpybozo,
@grumpybozo@toad.social avatar

@mishellbaker Nature of existence…
“Happy” as a base state can’t drive “progress,” whatever that may mean in context. Happiness by default would lead to stasis. We are wired for vigilance, competition, and anticipation of risk, not for bliss.

Gee—today is my lucky day. I've been offered the opportunity to manage $150,000,000 by the Bezos Family Foundation, $50,000,000 from the Zuckerberg Foundation, and $100,000,000 from the Warren Buffet Foundation and the Musk Foundation, plus another $80,000,000 from a dying cancer patient. Of course, I have to use all of that money for philanthropic purposes. Any suggestions on worthy recipients?

The way we write about and report on the wholesale slaughter of women in Australia has to change.

The “tragic reason” this man murdered his “beloved” wife?

He had secretly spent their savings and didn’t want to be found out.

We report on male violence from the assumption that they’re “good blokes”

Newsflash: Murdering your wife makes you not a fucking good bloke.

"He said that he came up with the idea to kill his wife to spare her from their financial problems and to avoid being embarrassed by him and his failings," Justice Weinstein said.

grumpybozo,
@grumpybozo@toad.social avatar

@Daojoan Fundamental journalism fail. I.e. “He said” is not an objective basis for saying that a murderer’s motive was ‘tragic’ WHATEVER he actually said. As they are quoting a judge stating what a criminal defendant claimed, there MUST be more to that statement...
I’d guess that his real motive was banal and selfish: not wanting to face accountability for his failure. Hardly “tragic”

Fascinating both for what it says about dev & what it says about statistics:

A gamedev realized Linux users were just 5.8% of their sales, but represented 38% of bug reports.

Then they looked at those numbers closer, and realized. Linux users were not experiencing more bugs. Almost none of the Linux-user bugs were Linux-related. Linux users were simply more likely to file bugs.

Their conclusion: A linux port pays for itself bc it nerdsnipes ppl into giving u free QA

    The speaker circus is over and the Republicans' selection is, as documented by TPM here, a thought leader in 2020 election denial/conspiracy theories. We're used to extremist Republicans but the third person in Presidential succession has openly opposed electing the President democratically, which is a new line crossed.

    Once again, what gets reported as "Republicans embarrassing themselves!" is the Republican far right being very very effective at achieving goals

    And, of course, never use a password manager that autofills without user interaction.

    Combining those 2 isn't a perfect defense against that sort of attack, but it limits the impact for some target sites and mitigates risk from a broad class of possible attacks.

    Lots of talk about Mark Meadows taking an immunity deal to testify for Jack Smith in his DC case. But what about the documents case? Cassidy Hutchinson had a lot to say about how Meadows handled documents.

    grumpybozo,
    @grumpybozo@toad.social avatar

    @Karoli Immunity does not imply deal.
    “Use immunity” is a last-ditch prosecutorial tactic used to compel testimony on particular issues.
    Smith may well have needed to know what Meadows would say at trial about Trump.

    grumpybozo,
    @grumpybozo@toad.social avatar

    @Karoli Which would still likely just be use immunity. I’m not sure I trust ABC’s anonymous sources to be precise about the details…
    Anything more extensive would probably require a comprehensive co-op and plea deal, which seems unlikely to exist, given how Meadows tried & failed to deal with the GA case. But everyone is pretty much guessing based on incomplete information.

    Ex-Chief of staff Mark Meadows just flipped.

    Ex-Chief of staff Mark Meadows who exchanged texts with 34 members of congress to overthrow the government then later burned piles of evidence just flipped.

    He testified under oath at least three times already

    2x before the special counsel’s office
    1x to a grand jury

    Trump suspected Mark Meadows would flip on him
