Why do we have so many programming languages!?

grwster,

@rasterweb for the same reason we don’t use channel lock pliers for every job? general purpose tools are great, but they always fall short on any specific task

My 9 year old nephew (who lives in a city) refers to people who are between 18-25 "New Hires". As in "hey, look at all those New Hires" and "I saw a lot of New Hires heading to the bar". 😂

some folks have been asking what the difference between this git zine I've been writing and "Oh Shit, Git!" (which we published in 2018) is.

The main difference is that Oh Shit, Git! is about how to get out of git messes. The new zine explains why those messes happen in the first place. I think they're both very important.

Also, I didn't come up with Oh Shit, Git! Katie Sylor-Miller made https://ohshitgit.com, I was a huge fan, and we made it a zine together.

@b0rk Just so you know, you've already helped me out ;-)

I used 'git rebase' the other day when, previously, I would have just used 'git merge' because it was more familiar: https://mastodon.social/@grwster/112295193314255368

LaTeX friends!

I’m looking for a modern and native (not electron) mac OS text editor that might take the place of textmate in my latex workflow.

I'm hoping to find something with existing bundles / scripts / extensions comparable to textmate’s LaTeX bundle. The great "Watch Document" feature works so much better than “latexmk -pvc”.

Any recs? I feel like the pickings are slim. When a nice native editor has any LaTeX support it's usually just syntax highlighting and a basic build script.

grwster,
@grwster@mastodon.social avatar

@mcnees I use emacs, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

There are some more IDE-like apps around, like TeXworks, but that's probably not what you're looking for either. I even (just now) found a new one, Compositor, that looks pretty nice https://compositorapp.com

@ai6yr Huh, the W in 1869-W probably refers to a branch office to the West of downtown “Cities soon needed additional branch offices some distance from Central, to accommodate the subscriber base and expanding area, as a single office typically served a maximum of ten thousand telephone numbers. Often, additional central offices might be named by the directions of the compass, North, South, East, and West.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_exchange_names

It's a shame no one gives a fuck about what happens in a UI when shit goes wrong.

(I ended up writing a script to click and close them all.)
