We need to STOP running DOOM on new things
and START putting new things into DOOM.

For example, today I added micro-transactions to the original game. Any time you pick up an item, the game freezes until you make a payment.

opening DOOM from the command line. start a new game. immediately walk to health item. when the character touches it, the game freezes and a QR code pops up. I scan the qr code with my phone and a credit card payment UI is displayed. I enter fake credit card details, hit submit. A second later the web page on the phone says "Payment Complete" and the game on the computer resumes.

This is my entry for the Boston Stupid Shit Nobody Needs & Terrible Ideas hackathon.

The game is actually modified! I jammed libcurl into the chocolate doom source port and wrote a little python server to generate qr codes and handle the payment info.

A portable QR code scanner/printer that turns pesky QR-based restaurant menus into physical, paper copies... right at your table.

Silver lunchbox with a thermal printer module in the front and a large antenna on top. I hold my phone with a qr code to the side, a light at the top changes color. An itemized menu starts printing from the thermal printer a few seconds later.

We've got this cheap egg cooker that plays the loudest, most terrifying alarm you've ever heard when it's done cooking. My wife requested that I make it "less aggressive" so I hacked it into the most gentle egg cooker of ALL TIME

(warning: probably loud)

Before shot: egg cooker finishing an egg before modification. Jarring alarm goes off, I say "fuck!" After shot: egg cooker finishes. A few moments later, a small mechanical music box next to the cooker starts playing Pachelbel's Canon

Then I pull out a phone with a white screen and a picture of a trackpoint in the middle. When I hold and drag it, the lights also dim wirelessly.

A physical mailbox that blocks all push notifications on my WiFi network until I get off my ass and put my phone inside it.

Start with phone next to toy mailbox with flag down. I hold the phone up, it says "no notifications". I open the mailbox and place the phone inside. A small motor lifts the mailbox's flag. After a few seconds, notification chimes come through. I remove the phone, the flag comes down, and I show that there are several notifications on screen.

Bought a cheap little USB touchscreen and learned the only(?) option for drivers on Mac costs $150 PER MACHINE. Made a little USB converter with a $1 microcontroller (RP2040) that remaps the touchscreen output to standard mouse/keyboard events understood by any computer.

Got the new Jumperless breadboard and realized that I could have a CircuitPython app WIRE UP IT'S OWN CIRCUIT and then run the actual code. You hit save with changes and both the changes to the wiring and the code boot near instantly!!

running a circuitpython app with a chunk of code commented out. There is a button and an LED on a black breadboard with an Arduino Nano ESP32 hooked up. I hit the button and nothing happens. I bring back the chunk of code, the rows of the breadboard hooked up to the button and led light up. I start hitting the button, the LED lights while the button is pressed.

Built this little bluetooth fella to play JOUNCER PX (excellent game my friend released today!)

These pro micro form factor NRF52840 dev boards have very quickly become my favorite. $6 on AliExpress, includes battery charging, UF2 bootloader, that low profile USB port, 3.3V regulator that you can turn on/off with a GPIO pin. And BLE!!

Only big downside is that they are clones of the nice!nano board:
