From 1940s-1980, the wealthiest paid 70-94% marginal tax rates. Zero of them went broke from taxation. Zero of them left the USA. All remained exceedingly wealthy, manufacturing boomed, AND we had the strongest middle class growth in US History.

Let's do that again.

Note: I used ChatGPT to summarize what he did because I didnt' recall the details: In 1993, President Bill Clinton's administration introduced Section 162(m) of the Internal Revenue Code, limiting tax-deductible executive compensation to $1 million unless it was "performance-based." This unintentionally promoted the use of stock options as compensation across all levels of jobs.

    @aral I'm thinking separate out the community/town/city to Mastodon instances run by the local government (could even be libraries) then federate/gateway in "entertainment" which is what Twitter, etc. is?....if you want the "entertainment" channel, then there is an app for that..Twitter, Threads, whatever...

    @caseynewton I'm wondering if we should look at the functions of Twitter like the Public Library and our cities, etc. should own their instance that gets federated. Then really rich people backed by rich people who must at all costs get their billions back or end in a cage fight won't be able to foist their reality on us.

    @caseynewton also, this is another reason why open source solutions (like Mastodon) are important. Even more so for AI models. The exact craziness will happen when OpenAI owns the LLMs and open source can''t compete due to lack of funding. If open source gets strong, it balances out or improves on monopolistic tech solutions. I am not saying you have to jump to Mastodon. I am saying folks developing the technologies must exist.

    @caseynewton I sure with I could try the 3d ai conf thingy with my 94 yr old Father. We use an Echo Show. It is VERY challenging given his hard hearing and bad eyesight. We have to use the Echo Show because it is the only one he isn't able to "break". Bummer.
