Can someone else try the fingerprint reader on their phone after washing the dishes (or showering) and let me know if it works. Wondering if it's just me ....

Seriously, fuck proprietary software. Started using EndNote because that's what collaborators use. Now I can't access my web library without shelling out for an update to the new version. 💣 shoulda stuck with Zotero.

I love the way I can just type 'apt-get install softwarename' and 30 seconds later I have a new tool installed. No licences, no subscriptions, not even hunting in a store for it. rocks.

@blake lol. I had been using openSuse w Yast/zypper and Fedora is my current main but maybe cos my first serious distros were Debian based I'm just comfortable with apt and don't even have to think about it. Never entirely 'at home' w rpm.

The more I learn about how the streaming and publishing industries currently work, the more I just want to pirate everything and send artists and authors tips directly.

Or alternatively... help crowdfund new works! Looking forward to hearing @pluralistic read the audiobook edition of "The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation" Only 13 hours left to become a backer:

@ZaneSelvans @pluralistic oh this looks cool. And with Verso!!! I love Verso books, such a great publisher, I can read them on any of my devices, and they don't gouge on postage to Australia if I order a hard copy.

Sometimes I think of all the cool that has been authored at my current employer: BSD, vi, Pascal, UCSD P-System, Eucalyptus Cloud, Postgresql, and now the Zero to JupyterHub data science stuff I'm currently involved in implementing, and it motivates me to want to continue to build an excellent stack just to see what will come of it and what we might do next with it all, and who else will get to benefit from all of it.

@vwbusguy @mttaggart pretty damn cool.

@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

-driven disruptions are going to challenge the state structure in a few important ways:

  • People are going to move to new places, away from the worst-hit places to also-hit places that already have few resources to address the needs of people who already live there.

  • A lot of them are going to be hungry, thirsty, hot, and angry.

  • Investment in future economic activity will be worth less as climate becomes less predictable, especially in places that already depend heavily on agriculture and pastoralism for most incomes. Elites will be a lot more focused on grabbing whatever they can, now, than in investing in the public to extract more later.

  • Expectations will be thwarted more rapidly. Anyone expecting that this coup will be the one that finally fixes the mess of the last administration will rapidly become disillusioned, so surely the next coup will follow in short order.

The old state system that the world has taken for granted as an a priori obvious fixture of the global stage is already fatally broken across the Sahel and the Levant into Iraq. Mexico and Central America are in bad shape. Judging from climate models, the Indian subcontinent should be next.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@HeavenlyPossum what's frustrating me most is the whole business-as-usual thing. So few actually grapple with this. It's bizarre.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @simon_brooke I'm not. I need antibiotics and dental care, and a house that hasn't burned down, and I suck at gardening; I couldn't feed myself let alone climate refugees from the coast.

@danirabbit ah poor thing. That's awful.
Our union is currently involved in enterprise bargaining and management agreed to leave for gender affirmation, including a day a month. Which is totally beside your point but just a small positive. Like I thought them painting our stairs in a rainbow was cute but actually putting money where your purported values are in caring for staff is pretty huge.

I find myself wondering how light can a light distro be. Given you need to operate the system & software (browser, basic text editor/word processor at minimum) what is the realistic floor for hardware these days? And what is the impact of web resource bloat?

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@kyleejohnson ah yeah so I'd think of that as 'headless' even though that might not be the right way to use the term. Lite means stuff my cheapo underpowered excuse of a laptop will load in less than five minutes and allow me to run more than one app at a time. I should probably pony up the cash for a new one, but then I'd have to worry about it getting stolen.

So excited about this. One of the worst tech patents ever is now dead. I have fought this patent for 4+ years. I was the expert witness in two cases, most recently in NC. Non-practicing trolls are the worst. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/04/how-landmark-technologys-terrible-patent-has-survived @eff

Ways to fight climate change.

Easy:
Buy less stuff.
Re-use more stuff.
Fix broken stuff.
Burn less stuff.
Eat local stuff.

Feel free to add to the list.

Non ideological answers only.

RickiTarr, to random
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

The very idea that someone could "turn" a straight kid LGBTQ+ or a Cis kid trans, just continues to prove that they don't actually believe or care about any facts, doctors, or science, and their opinions should be blatantly ignored.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@ashwin @DemocracySpot @RickiTarr I tend to agree with these thoughts to some extent cf Butler via Foucault on the performativity of gender - and I think the church/establishment treatment of queer folk has actually reinforced a kind of biological essentialism, this being the only argument left when 'choice' is aligned with 'sin': 'biology' is 'nature' and unnoposable (biology as in genetic/brain structure). The key here is to oppose the concept of sin and support the validity of freedom.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@ashwin @DemocracySpot @RickiTarr (This is NOT to say that there is not a biological basis for gender self-identity & orientation, on the contrary there is some evidence for that - as always 'it's complicated'; but what I'm arguing for is that free choice, independent of any biological imperative, is absolutely valid.)

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@DemocracySpot @ashwin @RickiTarr this is not just academic for me, and I don't think arguing for freedom of choice is disrespectful. Until we are free to be who we want and act as we please and love who we love, there can be someone tell us we don't have that right, who gatekeep our identities and behaviours based on body parts or genes or scores on a test sheet. Essentialism is the antithesis of freedom.

@neurovagrant the things I regret most are the things I talked myself out of because I was scared or didn't think I was good enough. So many career opportunities through my life, in music and IT especially, missed. The best things have been when I had physical courage. Military service (yes, I know. don't @ me), adventures rockclimbing and skiing. Do the things while you can, people.
