TIL @hrbrmstr ‘s handle is read aloud as “Harbour master”, or can be. Which is definitely better than what I’ve been saying in my head the past 18 months, “Herbert hamster” 🐹 🥲 https://fosstodon.org/@josi/112388541647800781

@jimgar @hrbrmstr @adamhsparks I read it as “herb master” for a long time and thought they were really into grilling or gardening.

There's a concept we often talk about in health or psych of practitioners having cultural competency.

What would culturally competent computing look like?

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@grimalkina In health or psych, I think of cultural competency as helping practitioners related to patients. What would that audience be for computing? Users or contributors, perhaps?

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@grimalkina I agree about the importance of psychological safety and care among a team. It's not generally what I think of as cultural competence (but my past exposure to clinicians gives me a more rigid definition).

You may also be interested in the emergence of "cultural humility" as an alternative. IIRC, it was to address clinicians taking a course/workshop on "cultural competence" and then believing that they can handle every interaction with patients from any background...

Hey folks, I'm thinking about doing a live stream of package development, or potentially package review.

I was reviewing a package for my research group on a video call and I think it was helpful to demonstrate the process, and see someone think through a problem.

My goal is that I want to showcase the process of doing package development and reviewing, and I think it would be fun to do it on twitch, or something like that.

I've never done anything like this before, I was considering doing it this Sunday, but could also do during the work week in the morning (Australia Tasmania time - afternoon for USA viewers).

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on how to do streaming well, is Twitch the right place to do it?

If you'd like a package reviewed I would be happy to take a look, and promise I will be kind :)

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@njtierney Having 1 or 2 guests (who are also experienced package developers / reviewers) who can ask questions to you and/or otherwise fill dead air would be a nice add, I think.

Do you know any besides:

Four days without nicotine. Proud of myself for getting this far but omg. The cravings are intense and I have been so very irritable the last few days. On the plus side, I noticed a real improvement to my breathing while running this morning. I couldn’t run any faster than last week, but it felt a lot easier. I got to 12k at my usual pace and felt like I could keep going for much longer without pushing myself. I might yet keep my tradition of doing a half marathon every year alive 🤔

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@gvwilson @djnavarro What age bracket would you slot them under?

For the last 10+ years, I have been advising a team in an Indian education nonprofit that I cofounded. My cofounder in Mumbai is maybe the only street social worker I know turned coding coach. She’s translated many American ‘coding for kids’ resources into Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. She’s figured out how to teach kids from low income backgrounds with no computer, phones, internet at home. She’s teaching children of construction workers. She has public school pilots going. She’s wonderful.

@skinnylatte Very cool! I was a former selection committee member for the CSS Event Fund - https://www.codeforsociety.org/eventfund

I think the age group might be out of scope, but Angela Okune, who runs it, might know of other funding sources.

I would simply like more people to know & enjoy this: when we studied the visibility of engineering work in our Developer Thriving project, I described visibility as top-down (from leaders to managers and ICs) as well as bottom up (from ICs and managers to leaders).

Besides being a description, this is also a reference to the language science uses about ATTENTION. Bottom-up attentional shift occurs in response to unanticipated information, it's adaptive and agile--and not directed from the top.

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@grimalkina "math complexity" as in "computational complexity"?

From my perspective, a lot of complex systems theory draws from physics and biology. (but maybe that's more in line with academic research than software dev)

Just saw a really irritating anti-remote work chart crime from making the rounds on twitter, from an article claiming that "The most worrying finding in the latest survey -- especially in a workplace that is increasingly hybrid and remote -- is that employees who can do their work remotely have an eroding connection to the mission or purpose of the organization."

https://www.gallup.com/workplace/509759/remote-workers-organizations-drifting-apart.aspx

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@skinnylatte @chu I mean, I understand that he is a comic who is sticking to the thing that brought him popularity.

As an educator, I strive for empathy when dealing with people who don't approach a task very successfully (e.g. mediocre attempts at cuisines outside of one's cultural upbringing and experience). I don't want to repeatedly expose myself to content that sort of goes against this value by poking fun at people.

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@skinnylatte @chu Agree - the border between social commentary and unkind comedy is blurry!

Had a disappointing phone call from Toronto police about Tesla lady. They talked to her, they told her the safe passing distance, then they told me that the street I complained about is in fact wide enough for cyclists to ride on the right and get passed.

hye,
@hye@glammr.us avatar

@casseagull @mbonsma And at an individual level, cops may choose to downplay or ignore problems that they don't want to deal with. This is easier when a situation doesn't fit within their preconception of a "crime".

Sorry to hear about your situation @mbonsma. 💜
