Serial hobbyist; chasing delight through curiosity. Force of nature. All rules are made up; if they're not helping, we can change them. All systems are made of people. WHS, Olin, CMU, and beyond; opinions mine.

My aptitude tests as a kid came back "Analyst" which seemed like a made-up job at the time, but damn if I don't love a good spreadsheet. Currently on sabbatical after 15 years as technical staff in academia.

Who’s got two thumbs and won at bobbin chicken!

ai6yr, to random

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:

  1. Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
  2. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)

(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )

@ai6yr I second moussaka

Also baba ganoush

Eggplant bharta

Karniyarik / Turkish stuffed eggplant

Vegan bacon

Miso-glazed and roasted

You can also caramelize them like onions into a jammy texture and hide them in a stew or soup

Can you define engineering? Like what is it essentially and how is it different from natural sciences

(not looking for textbook definition)

I think engineering at its core is (or rather the core way in which it invents currently) is controlling the forces of nature in a reliable and predictable way to produce reliable and predictable outcomes via physics, math and chemistry that may or may not benefit mankind in different degrees

The predisposition to control nature is what distinguishes it

infryq,
@infryq@pgh.social avatar

@impactology one part missing from your def is “solving human problems”, which I think is important. There isn’t really basic/pure engineering the way there is with natural sciences, finding out just to understand the world; there’s no controlling the forces of nature just to see if it’s possible, it has to solve an actual problem

@sewing @sewing All this Mira top (M4M) needs is hems. I don't like the finishing on the sleeve cap. It feels very unstable, even with some fusible tricot. I will try the clear elastic trick on the next one. I love the neckline. I plan to add a skirt to the crop top view to make a dress.

@kamikat @sewing @sewing I vote strappy, but mostly because you’re practically there already and sometimes an easy win is nice

@alexisbushnell@toot.wales avatar

Ok so because patterns make me want to cry, I figured I'm gonna try and knit a vest top by winging it and didn't realise (again) that once the yarn starts coming off the needles, it's bigger than when you cast on. So I can't just cast on, measure the stitches, and then work it out from there.

So I think I'm gonna have to frog this bit and start again with fewer stitches.

My theory is I can knit a front and back square and then sew them together with gaps for head and arms.

Alright, friends with an eye for design... need your advice!

I'm making a handbag. Outside is very classy. Harris Tweed, leather, brass hardware.

I can't decide what lining to use.

Originally I got the dark green fern fabric for the lining.

Recently I got the lighter green with bees for another project but could repurpose (I bought lots).

I think I like that it matches the clasp. But... I think the darker fabric is more classy. And then, the lighter is more fun.

Spent the afternoon in my room, making a pattern out of an existing pyjama top for my wife. I still need to trace out the sleeve, but I’m happy with my progress so far. Slow but steady. @sewing

A large cutting table littered with oak tag pieces and various pattern drafting tools; you can see the front and back pattern pieces close to the front, with the scrunched up pyjama top near the back.

@DanielMenjivar @sewing a pair of embroidery scissors with very sharp points. I’ve never needed fray check for them, but then again most of my fabrics are tightly woven

It's interesting to contemplate fictional characters who would be good or bad waiting room companions at the doctor's office.

Probably good: Jane Eyre, Simone from The Good Place, Data or Chakotay from Star Trek, Dr. Rivers from Regeneration, Murderbot

Probably bad: Chidi from The Good Place, most of Zen Cho's protagonists, Beckett Mariner or Q from Star Trek, Randy Waterhouse for most of Cryptonomicon, Siegfried Sassoon in Regeneration, pretty much everyone in The Great Gatsby

So who do you have to sell your soul to in order to be able to do pattern matching when sewing?

My brain refuses to comprehend.

@sewing

infryq,
@infryq@pgh.social avatar

@BluRae @sewing remember to use red candles and black handles scissors for the sacrifice

some people say they prefer a rotary cutter but I’ve never been able to get that to work 🧙‍♀️🪡🕯️✂️

infryq,
@infryq@pgh.social avatar

@BluRae @sewing For real though, YouTube will totally help, but the short version is

  1. cut on a single layer
  2. mark the stitching line in addition to the cutting line
  3. cut each piece out as you go and use it to help you lay out the pieces that will be sewn to it
  4. match the pattern at the stitching line, not at the cutting line
  5. if one side of the seam is a different bias/shape than the other, it might be impossible 😔

A study of seniors showed that those who had weathered a prior infection were 30x more likely to catch a newer variant. This suggests natural immunity is just not a thing for COVID. Please factor this into the decisions you make for yourselves and others.

    It is incredibly frustrating that the only thing more stupid than Patreon is all the alleged Patreon substitutes that clearly don't even understand what Patreon does.

    Pro tip: Patreon has no meaningful competitors, and also it sucks, so there's a huge opportunity for somebody to kick sand in its face and take its lunch money. But to do that you would have to understand what actually Patreon does that is worth it to creators to allow Patreon to take 5% of their proceeds (and then pass on to them a second 5% in payment processing fees).

    Is it a new thing that newer technologies like crypto and AI is fantasized over before problem solving.

    Are there examples through time of people getting excited over the novelty of a technology so much so they're investing in the novelty itself and not focusing on solving real problems?

    Or is this a newer thing in digital world?
