I'm proud to announce the launch of the public beta for Clew, my independent web search engine! 🎉🎉🎉

Try Clew: https://clew.se
Add to your browser: https://clew.se/add/

Clew maintains an independent index and is aiming to be a copyleft (APGLv3), self-hostable, privacy-respecting, customizable search engine which prioritizes independent creators/bloggers/writers and penalizes sites with ads and trackers.

Many features are yet to come. If you'd like to support Clew's development and server costs, you can donate to its Liberapay team: https://liberapay.com/Clew/

Boosts are very welcome, as is feedback of any kind!

Some context for the currently discussed federation of Meta‘s Thread with Mastodon.

@bodomenke THANK YOU! I was quite dumbfounded not to see the DMA mentioned anywhere in all this drama about . Almost confronted my laziness and posted about it myself. Fortunately, you beat me to it.

Today is one of those days where it's just fun to be at the computer, just for its own sake. A computer day. Computers are pretty neat actually.

I also feel like it wouldn't feel the same with a laptop which I would totally use while slouched on the couch. The fact that it's a stationary object, a big screen and a chunky keyboard, makes a big difference. It's like a little shrine for computing that I go to. It feels very intentional.

I'm fine tuning my laptop a bit and that means installing all the tools I need to make this my personal daily driver machine.

Unfortunately things like MySQL need to be compiled from source which is taking some time on a 10 year old 1.5GHz Celeron.

At least it's proving a good stress test for the cooling system...it's been holding steady at 60C for the past couple of hours of this. 😆

iooioio,
@iooioio@fosstodon.org avatar

@cablespaghetti Well technically you could compile it on a different machine and then copy it over with nix-copy-closure... at least so I've heard. I'm no wizard. Never tried such a thing myself.

"Your occassional reminder that in 2016 alone, America dropped nearly three bombs every hour, 24 hours a day. A staggering 26,171 bombs rained down on Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Somalia and Pakistan - that’s seven Muslim-majority territories. The USA was running special operations in no less than 138 countries, 70% of the world’s nations. Since the so-called War on Terror was launched in 2002, the "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" has been responsible for the deaths of at least four million civilians, and the maiming or displacement of tens of millions more."

Fixed the breakage of Emojis I introduced when implementing HashTags because I am a moron.

Added adaptative timeouts when sending messages to other instances.

Thinking about uses for a forge outside code, one usecase is as a family forge, like recipes. So in a way you might have a family mastodon instance, you could have a family forgejo instance.

Improvements to family recipes could be incremental.

Like I have my recipes in an app so exporting to a binary blob, my dad put his in a word doc, and books etc.

So a repo with recipes organised into cuisine and markdown files would be cool.
