    @vowe I administer my own instance, but if I had admins excluding everyone using Meta just because, I'd move. Leave that decision to users who have all the tools they need.

    One thing I'm wondering, aside from any ideological viewpoints: Does scale the way new potential giants like / would need it to? I remember some bigger accounts already having put a lot of pressure on / instances (i.e., see https://ar.al/2022/11/09/is-the-fediverse-about-to-get-fryed-or-why-every-toot-is-also-a-potential-denial-of-service-attack/ – thanks for the write up, @aral!)and that would be nowhere near of what to expect…

    Protocol wise, it just doesn't look like a good fit to me. Any insights or thoughts here?

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @aral Thanks Aral! Can you be a bit more elobarative one the "assumed hierarchy", especially regarding ? In the end, do I get you right on the perspective that , which is currently hyped for its decentral approach, fosters the opposite in the end, like many others do for the sake of scalability?

    I thought Musk challenging Zuck to a cage match was a new level of absurd. But wait! From a dank, Romanian prison, an alleged rapist and human trafficker just had to weigh in.

    jens,

    @georgetakei He would just fit perfectly in "Team Musk".

    People act like Gmail came in and afterwards there were no more email providers. Did a lot of people use it? Yes. Did it somehow kill off all off the small email providers? No. Some of them? Sure. All? No.

    Why did I switch from Gmail to Proton? Because I stopped trusting Gmail. And felt that I could trust Proton more. Can I still email someone that uses Gmail? Yes. Do I have to support Gmail? No.

    The purpose of an open protocol is choice. Otherwise why bother making it open?

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @Mrfunkedude @ramsey The sad difference to your analogy here is that one could always transfer their mails from one provider to another. But if Mastodon was your mail provider, all you could take with you was your address book and some filter rules… Which is a hefty cost for choice.

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @ramsey @Mrfunkedude True. Albeit that would somehow equal being allowed to export your mails, but not import them with a new account. Now please stop me should I come up with car analogies. 😂

    What interesting things are happening around Mastodon (specifically Mastodon, not the Fediverse at large)?

    It feels like all the talk about new discovery-related features has pretty much died down, maybe as a result of many people just quietly returning to Twitter (or moving on to Bluesky.)

    I don't find Mastodon's public roadmap <https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap> terribly useful, either ("AND-77 Display Settings", etc.)

    So... what's happening?

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @hmans To be quite frank, I share the same sentiment also for Bluesky. The vibrant vibes of “the early” days (gosh, this thing just exists for a few months now…) are also more or less gone, at least that’s my perception. Maybe Musk succeeds in normalising through repetition?

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @hmans Thank god you aren’t one of those evangelists hitting me with a 2000 words three pager now, because character limits are for losers. 😂 But if you want to know what a real alpha version of some social network feels like, I can get you an invite for .

    ohne Stichwortsuche und einen Algorithmus, der die jeweiligen Nutzer:innen ein wenig kennt und ihnen hilft, wird das hier weiterhin nix

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @isotopp @janboehm Hm. Calckey hat so ziemlich das furchtbarste UI aller mir bekannten Alternativen, „keep it simple“ scheint dort eher der Sündenfall zu sein. Dazu sind die Evangelisten dort fast so ungenießbar wie manche:r Fudamentalist:in hier. 🙈

    jens,
    @jens@coma.social avatar

    @beandev @janboehm Algorithmen müssen nicht vorgegeben sein, da gibt es andere spannende Ansätze. Aber ich gebe dir Recht, problematisch bleibt bei Mastodon die Datenbasis, auf der irgendwelche Algorithmen je nach Instanz besser oder schlechter funktionieren, was in Teilen so offenbar auch eine bewusste Entscheidung ist.

    jens,

    Constantly hunting the best tool for the job? It’s addictive. After a few months with Arc, I switched my default browser to Orion. Contrary to most other alternatives, the latter is based on , but has native support for both Chrome and Firefox extensions built in. I’m already in love with its focus mode and lean appearance (which shouldn’t let you underestimate its feature set!).

    Orion is currently in public beta.

    Originating from the same company, as an alternative to Google’s search makes up for a strong first impression. It’s blazingly fast.

    You have to pay for it, but you’re not a product then.
