Hey so @Nifflas 's game "Uurnog" is on steep sale RN and I really highly recommend it https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@Nifflas/112520440316710187

IMO one of the most underrated games of the last decade, especially for those of you who are game medium deconstructionists. It's surface-simple but has a lot of strange, surprising thoughts about "what is a Video Game and how do you interact with it?" simmering just underneath… it's very good at finding ways that simple mechanics can combine in ways that really surprise you.

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@mcc i bought it, go ahead and tell me the thing now so that it’s mostly forgotten by the time i get around to playing it

What gives you a Star Trek vibe without being Star Trek?

Could be from any medium, not just TV and movies. Like if you've got a board game or a role-playing game or a video game or a card game or a ball game or a tracing game or a tangerine game or a book game or a laser game, any of those would work, too.

And there's no need to mention Galaxy Quest or Orville as I am already aware of those.

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@epidiah i have a feeling you’re already aware of Iain Banks’ The Culture series but it always strikes me as a deeply thought-out deconstruction of Star Trek

Vinge’s A Fire Upon the Deep also gives me similar vibes. where Banks’ deconstruction of Trek is kinda political/philosophical, Vinge’s is more high-concept: what if Star Trek had to maintain a minimum level of science fiction “hardness” without discarding stuff like warp drive or intelligent computers?

might i suggest “touch clover” as a pollinator-friendly alternative?

The bleeding heart flowers are unfurling beautifully this morning, and you can see the delicate bulbs filled with nectar.

I keep these and other toxic species in a fenced area behind the old barn so the local animals don't get into them. I call it my “poison garden.”

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@Cat_LeFey how toxic are these? i wonder if we should take more care about where ours are located 😬

Good that @Morning_Joe opened the show with the appalling story of The Worst Justice (tough competition) displaying the insurrectionist (anarchist) symbol at his house (and blaming it on his wife, blaming it in turn on a neighbor's yard sign). This Court is ruined.

@jeffjarvis Hi, that shithead Scalia has nothing to do with anarchists. We (anarchists) stand against literally everything he represents.

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@jeffjarvis Uh…yes? Not sure what you’re getting at?

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@jeffjarvis Ok but seriously, do you understand you’re using “anarchism” and “anarchist” in senses that are directly opposed to their actual meaning?

Do you know what anarchists believe? What our political views are? How much we fucking hate Antonin Scalia?

Doing a “perfect day” for my partner today.

We started doing this for each other years back. Basically one of us just announces the other is getting a perfect day in a few days, we clear our schedules, and then just pamper the other all day long. Sometimes we do it when one of us is having a rough patch, other times we just do it spontaneously because it’s been a minute.

It’s one of my favorite couple traditions we have.

If I had more energy I'd be tempted to write a snarky, satirical, 21st century Jetson's style short story set in a future where all the dot-com 1.0-3.0 hype turned out to be true and faithful predictions of our lives in 2025. Just so I could explore the unanticipated drawbacks ("oops, the Amazon drone delivering your neighbour's new dishwasher just fell through your roof; meanwhile trades.com only shows you roofers who live in Boston, England, not Boston, MA").

@cstross Sega never stopped making home consoles…but they also never moved to 3D. Things were dicey for ~15 years, eking out on the strength of 2D MMO Sonic platformers that sold to a highly dedicated audience—an audience so obsessed with doing what Nintendon’t that they managed to keep The Sega Channel service viable indefinitely.

By 2020, the AAA gaming industry was so bloated, Sega was able to bounce back on the strength of the retro trend. Sega Channel is now the most used Roku app.

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@hannah They demolished a 150 year old mansion on this site but the balcony just…wouldn’t go.

Tools couldn’t mark it. The wrecking ball crumbled on it. When they finally tore down the rest of the building, the balcony remained, floating impossibly, unsupported, fixed in space.

At that point the new owner had to admit it wasn’t worth the escalating costs so they incorporated it into the new design.

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

@Cyrus @alex @infernusgoatus This reminds me of how I used to visualize the old USPS logo. Someone must’ve told me at a very very young age it was an eagle, but how my little kid brain interpreted this for years was like the looney tunes dodo bird

The dodo bird from looney tunes. It has a green body that vaguely resembles a kiwi bird, actually? Also wears little boots. It has a pointy head and beak that look like the USPS logo from the previous image, and it has a little umbrella on its head so you it’s silly.

Going full joker mode over how many times I’ve had to two-factor authenticate my student loan account trying to access my tax forms

jepyang,
@jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

This also feels like a situation where the activity on the account is so insignificant it would not affect our taxes by even a cent if I just totally forgot it

But it’s taxes

So it also feels like if I forgot it, this would be the one year that we get audited and it would turn out filing that one form could have kept me out of jail but instead they’ll be taking me to a CIA black site
