Excited to share that Ghost is going to federate over ActivityPub and become part of the largest open publishing network in the world 🎉

@johnonolan not only am I very very excited about your upcoming federation, but this is an absolutely beautiful announcement post 😍 kudos!

Sixteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

@evan thank you for all of your tireless work on making the fediverse happen!

Did you imagine when you started that it would take 16 years to get to where we are currently?

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@evan what a rollercoaster of emotions! 😅 I really appreciate that you kept working on it even when it didn't seem like open standards would win over proprietary stuff. That takes serious dedication!

I remember feeling the same idealism each time I encountered a new federated social network I thought was going to take over (diaspora, then mastodon) and then the ensuing disappointment when it didn't happen right away. Seeing threads + bluesky has helped buoy my hopes again! Now for instagram...

Some personal news: I'm now a contributor at @wedistributemedia! I'm so excited to work with the team over there reporting everything happening in the world of distributed social media.

For my first post, I wrote about @ghost joining the Fediverse 🙏🏼

What's exciting about this is that it isn't just an ActivityPub plugin - it's a top-down re-thinking about what Ghost is as a service. This is ActivityPub for publishers done right.

Congrats to @johnonolan and team! cc Fediverse Threads

is shutting down for funding shortfalls. I can’t think of a more dire canary in the Silicon Valley coal mine than this. We can expect a social fascist turn in the IT industry from here out as the remaining jobs not taken by AI are rationed out to men only.

$4m is chump change for infotech capitalists, a few bucks tossed to a pan handler. That they won’t fund anymore isn’t an economic decision, but palpably a policy priority toward a hard social rightward turn.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@Shufei as a woman who codes, this org was always pretty disappointing to me anyway. a lot of lip service marketing and vague “networking” mixers, very little actual talking about coding 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope to see more productive orgs/communities funded.

I also happen to know a woman founder of an AI company who has been funded (by YC no less), and I’ve seen many others with women execs. I don’t believe WWC’s demise is quite the signal you’re claiming it is.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@Shufei thank you for sharing your perspective, it's super helpful to hear their impact outside of my own bubble and how they helped you. I was in Silicon Valley, so it felt a little different there, but I can definitely see how their initiatives could help in a lot of places much less saturated by tech.

A thing you’ll see on Mastodon is this kind of gut assumption that wide-open computing and platform strategies are inherently virtuous.

And that competing approaches with more proprietary or corporate-controlled mechanics are inherently evil and poisonous.

Another thing you’ll see on Mastodon is waves and waves of spam, as a wide-open community commons finds its social and infrastructure fabric torn apart by bad actors.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@danilo yup. Everyone running their own single-user instance during the spam wave got to learn this in real time. I believe in open protocols and interoperation, but still think banding together on centralized servers for safety is absolutely necessary in the adversarial world of the internet.

@molly0xfff I was reading it on my phone and managed to get through it without task switching, but not for lack of attempts by my phone to distract me! I was feeling proud of myself for getting almost to the end without even thinking about task switching when 2 text message notifications came in 😅 Under normal circumstances I would have opened them, but I thought better of it given what I had just read

I had to have surgery the morning of the second day of #FediForum so I’m still catching up with all of the demos and session notes, but I was so impressed with quality of discussions and how much exciting stuff is being built! After 5+ years hanging out on the fediverse, I feel like it’s finally happening!

Hey can anyone on an akkoma, misskey, micro.blog, or friendica instance follow @frequency and tell me if you are able to see the photos on posts?

I'm trying to test out an issue with photos with privacy signatures on s3 not federating properly to pixelfed, and I'm looking to narrow down whether this is specific to pixelfed or a more general problem with this approach + federation. So far mastodon and hubzilla instances seem to handle it just fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Google Maps encourages you to stop searching for directions to places you travel to frequently

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@soren.iverson I've been complaining for years how unnecessarily reliant Google Maps and other navigation apps have made us on them. Happy to see a step in the right direction of encouraging people to learn to navigate themselves in familiar places! I do think a lot of people still want to see data along the route, like traffic, and have suggestions for less congested alternate routes... not sure how they could do this without it being full-blown navigation

Another day, another horrifying privacy breach of highly sensitive personal data by a social media tracking pixel 🤠🤡 This time it’s your tax data!

Apple has now rejected my app and my appeals multiple times, telling me that I must offer @frequency's subscription as an in-app purchase and give them 15%-30% of my revenue for hosting the content simply because someone might access it via their platform.

I am so angry at this extortion.

When I pointed out that micro.blog offers the same service and uses the same mechanisms I was trying to use, they suggested I report their app to the trust and safety team for a violation. Unbelievable.

Kudos to Signal for this fantastic blog post detailing the cost of running an anti-surveillance messaging service 👏🏻

I especially appreciate how they point out that while privacy can be more expensive, so too can the bloated surveillance and data collection that the big ad-tech companies rely on.

Yesterday was really hard. It was my first full day apart from Cookie (she’s still in intensive care). Making the 16 block walk to the vet felt like such a slog. I’m averaging deep breathing for one block and ugly crying for the next. I don’t feel like I’m losing my soulmate, I feel like I’m losing a chunk of my soul. It was a bright, sunny blue skies day yesterday and it was weird to not see her smiling like a silly puppy next to me.

Re-upping my plea for help!

I’m really jammed up on this and blocked by it

When I get it solved, I get to delete 55 triggers and a gem!

And then a similar amount in three other rails apps

Help!?

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@veganstraightedge if fx doesn’t offer a function to do that for you, I would write the migration in raw SQL. Postgres has a DROP TRIGGER IF EXISTS: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/sql-droptrigger.html

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@veganstraightedge @jamie I’m surprised too. I would honestly expect the drop trigger function to use the IF EXISTS as the default for safety. Maybe you can submit a PR 🙂

I’ve been using the How We Feel app to record my daily emotions for the last couple years. They do a good job of keeping all the data on your phone to protect your privacy. Unfortunately this means I just lost a couple years worth of that data when I upgraded my phone last week 😢 it does have the option to back up or transfer the data to another device, but it wasn’t on my list of apps I needed to remember to do that for, so I didn’t realize I had lost the data until it was too late 😔

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

The tension between protecting privacy by default and surprise data loss is a tough design decision for each app. I now have iCloud backup turned on, but wish I had been notified that was an option before I lost data from one of the most difficult times in my life.
