Mozilla's bad things examples: kill things that are cool, be victimized by a tracking company, and get sucked into "AI"

Google's bad things examples: kill way more things ppl liked, become one of the world's biggest tracking companies, design military "AI" for killing machines before it was trendy

Latest "doesn't work in Firefox": PayPal doesn't let you change your primary e-mail. They also don't let you "trust this device" to stop 2-factoring unless you use a chromium-based browser.

jhwgh1968,
@jhwgh1968@chaos.social avatar

@nepi my personal favorite was a janky 3rd party website used for a work thing at a prev job

I created an account, confirmed my (work) e-mail, and set a password. But I couldn't log in

After making sure I typed it right, I went to reset password. And there I discovered the issue:

The setup form, the reset password form, and the login form don't actually agree on what special characters can be in the password

So you can set a password that you can't then actually use nor clear

Latest comic: Electric vehicles gone wrong

I'm fine with the soft, whirring spaceship sounds that some EVs emit as a safety feature to alert people that they're moving. The new Dodge Charger EV comes with a deafening 126 dB roar, which is just plain obnoxious.

@jensorensen "petro-masculinity" in a nut shell:

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0305829818775817

> The concept of petro-masculinity suggests that fossil fuels mean more than profit; fossil fuels also contribute to making identities, which poses risks for post-carbon energy politics.

@whitequark novice Q: print over what? Is there a UART in your design?

gsuberland, to random
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

I was curious as to why some LDOs are MLCC stable and others aren't, and this appnote was very useful in explaining the details.

the most fascinating point was that even with MLCC stable LDOs it's often detrimental to put โ‰ค100nF capacitors very close to the output pins, and you should instead endeavour only to use a larger bulk decoupling MLCC.

https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva167a/snva167a.pdf

jhwgh1968,
@jhwgh1968@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland I saw this being detrimental in action, in an interesting EE video quite some time ago

The goal was to build a 1A constant current source with a 0.1% accuracy. Turned out building it the "obvious" way with LDOs in series according to their data sheets made the output ring mysteriously (resulting in a ~2% accuracy or something)

I believe the feedback loop used to adjust them created a similar phase effect. A well-chosen ceramic cap fixed it

Something Iโ€™m always disappointed by in apps is them not gracefully dealing with intermittent internet.
So many feel like theyโ€™ve never been tested on slow/patchy connections.

Why not let me:
๐Ÿ”นpress like, cache it, and send it when I get internet?
๐Ÿ”นpress send on a message, cache it, and send it when I get internet? (WhatsApp handles this one well IMO.)
๐Ÿ”นopen the message notification and see as much text as the notif held, & load the rest on reconnect?

jhwgh1968, (edited )
@jhwgh1968@chaos.social avatar

@mattgrayyes I wish I could fave this more than once

I'd also add, what happens if you have "partial" internet -- your DNS works, but your packets don't go where they're supposed to

This can not only happen when your connections drops for a moment, but e.g. a "Captive Wi-Fi Portal" waiting for you to agree or pay their toll

I understand if your app doesn't work fully, but you shouldn't be in a half-connected bizarro state where you can't connect bc you're connected but can't disconnect either
