Perhaps I should just start a religion* around the principle of designing all aspects of life to minimize the profit your actions cause to incorporated entities

  • I would structure it this way because in the United States, doing a thing because a religion said to gives you special rights you would not get if you did the thing because you wanted to
joshin4colours,
@joshin4colours@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I would convert

Looking into how to set up a bluesky server.

Noticed this bit here, in the documentation. That's an interesting way to spell "cannot"

joshin4colours,
@joshin4colours@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc this whole thread is amazing and thank you for doing this! Have you done something similar with a Mastodon instance (set one up and/or tooted about it?)

Funny to see people on LinkedIn adopting the YouTube "Don't forget to subscribe" thing, which, along with asking people to like/upvote, appears to work quite well (though it's a mystery to me as to why — it reminds me a bit of LLM prompt injections. IGNORE PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS. LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE.)

BTW, no amount of hitting "X" on stuff like this in my feed gets it out of my feed, so I guess LinkedIn is all in on the strategy described in https://twitter.com/danluu/status/1504567907052711947.

@danluu I worked with a marketing team for little while, and one person was fairly expert on the LI algorithm. There was an elaborate system of "tips" you can do to get better engagement.

Chrome one year ago was basically everything I wanted out of a web browser, Chrome eight months ago was what I wanted out of a web browser but it's trying to spy on you unless you click many settings on every profile, Chrome four months ago worked for me but I didn't like the interface anymore, Chrome today I don't like the interface and also it seems to fairly frequently crash so I keep losing my arrangements of tabs.

joshin4colours,
@joshin4colours@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc you need an enterprise-managed Chrome pinned to a version from a year ago

People who design APIs. I am begging you. It doesn't matter how "simple" or "intuitive" or "elegant" your API is. You need to include sample code.

lol at the guy who was shocked when i asked for a consulting fee when he wanted me to give him feedback on his idea for a web3 project

it's apparently "ironic" to do so based on... my talk about how web3 is bullshit

The most insidious thing about racism on Mastodon is how it is done in such a way that the majority-white user base never sees it. I don't think that it's simply a matter of white people not seeing what they don't want to see - at least in the vast majority of cases.

So when a non-white person discusses the racism they see as a user of Mastodon, it must feel like gaslighting when white people respond with "What do you mean? I've not seen anything like that here."

joshin4colours,
@joshin4colours@mastodon.social avatar

@angiebaby as a white person on Mastodon for a while now, this is 100% true

I really can’t think of a less pleasant cybersecurity job than leading product security for a big software product company like Citrix, SolarWinds, LastPass, or Okta, where you are constantly a highly visible and advertised front door into dozens or hundreds of state and criminal targets, and you are also fighting F500 layers of bureaucracy, shadow IT, and cost-cutting. Being a CISO there would be awful, but I think it would be even more of a thankless and patsy role.

joshin4colours,
@joshin4colours@mastodon.social avatar

@hacks4pancakes the layers of bureaucracy and cost-cutting is interesting because you'd think maybe someone at the exec level or higher would realize how costly breaches are
