Via @ianbetteridge, people seem to forget that there are four pronoun forms, not three, and they are not consistent between number/person/gender:

  • subjective
  • objective
  • possessive adjective
  • possessive pronoun

I/me/my/mine
We/us/our/ours
You/you/your/yours
She/her/her/hers
He/him/his/his
They/them/their/theirs

This new contact form is missing the adjective form.

If you search Mastodon for “threads.net” you’ll see a bunch of people wondering why they can’t see President Biden’s account, unaware that they are on an instance that did a full suspend on the threads.net domain.

I have a crazy and probably terrible idea:

A network of medium-sized, invite-only, interest-focused instances at various subdomains -- movies.social.example, minneapolis.social.example, foodies.social.example, gaming.social.example -- that all relay with each other and operate under the same server rules.

I really would love to see a - or -focused “group blog” or “publication” — technical deep dives, long opinion pieces, etc.

I see a lot of great writing about this place but almost all of it takes place in long threads that are difficult to read and refer to, or worse, in chat rooms.

“Subscription” doesn’t feel like an accurate word for all the stuff we subscribe to.

When you cancel a magazine subscription, Time doesn’t come and take all the issues back.

When you cancel a Hulu subscription, you can’t watch the show for which you’ve been paying for months or years.

Do you like your Spotify library? Hope you’re ok with paying for it for the rest of your life.

What do we call these? “Service plans”? “Rentscriptions”?

The superior moralizing that goes on on Mastodon has real “I don’t even own a TV” vibes.

Wait do people really think Meta is actually going to use ActivityPub?

From the Fedi Pact website:

"project92 is a real and serious threat to the health and longevity of fedi and must be fought back against at every possible opportunity"

This is defederation as sabotage, not as protection of individual users.

"i hereby agree to block any instances owned by meta"

Notice it says "block," not "silence." This means "prevent any of your users from following someone on P92/Meta." That's not what most people want, and if it is, they can block P92 themselves.

One thing that's great about hosting your own PDS vs hosting your own Mastodon instance is that a single-user Mastodon instance inherently sees just a sliver of the fediverse, for better or worse.

When hosting your own Bluesky PDS, there are no similar trade-offs within the ATProto network. The user experience is identical to that of somebody on the flagship server.

It’s crazy that Apple Music has had live radio with human DJs for years, and yet you can’t set up alerts for when shows you like are about to start.

We told people, “on the Fediverse, you can follow anybody from anywhere,” without telling them we would collectively disallow them from following people on platforms we don’t personally like.

I don’t think a lot of editing was done on this “Techno-Optimism .” I’ve only skimmed it but it reads like some Reddit epic awesomesauce garbage, including phrases such as: “which is good, because, have you met people?”

It’s a pretentious stream-of-consciousness manic rambling.

I like the promise of ActivityPub because I can connect with people without using corporate surveillance apps, not because I am prevented from using corporate surveillance apps to connect with people.

A question about media outlets now having a Fediverse presence via :

How many of them know they now have a Fediverse presence via Flipboard? I would imagine a lot of these Flipboard-enabled sites are just the result of someone creating a Flipboard account 10 years ago, hooking their site's RSS feed up to it, and forgetting about it.

Something else great about alt text on Mastodon is that it’s useful if the image or video doesn’t load because of the fragility of federation.

I didn’t buy that Meta was hiding Pixelfed references the last time they were accused of doing it, either.

It would just be so petty for something that has a sliver of the userbase Instagram does.

Meta does not see Pixelfed as a threat.
