“Subscription” doesn’t feel like an accurate word for all the stuff we subscribe to.

When you cancel a magazine subscription, Time doesn’t come and take all the issues back.

When you cancel a Hulu subscription, you can’t watch the show for which you’ve been paying for months or years.

Do you like your Spotify library? Hope you’re ok with paying for it for the rest of your life.

What do we call these? “Service plans”? “Rentscriptions”?

Something else great about alt text on Mastodon is that it’s useful if the image or video doesn’t load because of the fragility of federation.

If you search Mastodon for “threads.net” you’ll see a bunch of people wondering why they can’t see President Biden’s account, unaware that they are on an instance that did a full suspend on the threads.net domain.

The messaging on Mastodon needs to be a lot clearer.

“You cannot view this profile because your Mastodon server, example dot com, has suspended the example dot net domain.”

God bless Cord Jefferson who used his speech to beg Hollywood to make mid-budget movies again.

“Instead of making one 200 million dollar movie you could make twenty 10 million dollar movies. The next Martin Scorsese is out there.”

I have a crazy and probably terrible idea:

A network of medium-sized, invite-only, interest-focused instances at various subdomains -- movies.social.example, minneapolis.social.example, foodies.social.example, gaming.social.example -- that all relay with each other and operate under the same server rules.

The superior moralizing that goes on on Mastodon has real “I don’t even own a TV” vibes.

The second best time is now.

I got tired of how every Lorem Ipsum website has tons of intro text that isn't Lorem Ipsum, and it takes one or more steps of JavaScript to actually SEE LOREM IPSUM TEXT...

So I present to the world:

DUMB IPSUM

10kB of pure, raw HTML hosted on a Linode Object.

I think we forget that “reduce, reuse, recycle” is intentionally ordered.

First, reduce your consumption.

If you can’t reduce your consumption, reuse the things you consume.

If you can’t do either, then, as a last resort, recycle.

Masto-brained people ask: "Why would people flock to billionaire-owned/VC-funded networks like Bluesky and Threads?"

I hate to break it to you, but that's why they're flocking to those networks.

That model is "normal" and familiar. Something that runs on volunteer work and open software is alien and suspect.

No matter what you think of the “influencer” “profession,” if a TikTok ban means that some people will lose their livelihoods, that really says something about our reliance on centralized platforms.

R2D2 should get a standalone movie. No dialog, no established Star Wars characters. Just R2 bouncing from situation to situation and planet to planet in a low-stakes and lightly comic yet quietly profound series of mishaps.

A question about media outlets now having a Fediverse presence via :

How many of them know they now have a Fediverse presence via Flipboard? I would imagine a lot of these Flipboard-enabled sites are just the result of someone creating a Flipboard account 10 years ago, hooking their site's RSS feed up to it, and forgetting about it.

@tedivm As I see it right now, objections to on come in three flavors:

  1. Individual user safety, re: (a) harassment or (b) data privacy
  2. Boycotting an organization who abets genocide and hate speech
  3. Keeping the Fediverse free of corporate presence on FOSS/ideological grounds

I think these points often get conflated, and people talk past each other because they're focusing on different objections.

One can agree with any number of these and disagree with the others.
