@taylorlorenz "Meanwhile, the homeowners allege in their lawsuit, Seifu was assuring a second pair of buyers, the architects, that the downstairs unit they had their eye on was built to code. Seifu told Washingtonian he never made that assurance."

The builder's defense is that he never claimed the construction adhered to the building code?

If they continue on this trajectory, Israel is gonna turn itself into another right-wing culture war item and that will not serve them well.

“The tone of this letter is not reflective of the fact that the U.S. is the primary guarantor of Israel’s security. An unaware reader would assume that is the superpower in this relationship and the U.S. the recipient of aid.”

@JoshuaHolland Israel has been on this path since at least Netanyahu's speech to Congress in 2015 to undermine Obama, intensifying as he cozied up to Trump. Netanyahu gambled that allying with the Trumpists would help him politically, and clearly he doesn't care about whether it helps Israel.

Big Journalism's timidity is never more obvious than when, confronted with a blatant lie from a (usually Republican) politician, the news org then frames the lie as a mere mistake.

Example today from ABC News -- headline:

"South Dakota Gov. Noem admits error of describing meeting Kim Jong Un in new book"

Come on, journalists, this just makes you look ridiculous.

kcivey,
@kcivey@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor It was clearly just a typo. Her finger slipped and somehow hit the keys to produce "I remember when I met with the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor after all)."

In Republican-controlled legislatures, cruelty is policy. Latest:

"A Louisiana House committee voted Thursday to repeal a law requiring employers to give child workers lunch breaks and to cut unemployment benefits — part of a push by Republicans to remove constraints on employers and reduce aid for injured and unemployed workers."

@dangillmor Hmm: "First-term state Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, who sponsored the child labor measure and owns Smoothie King franchises across the Deep South, said he filed the bill in part because children want to work without having to take lunch breaks."

I sat down to throw together a quick blog post with an image dump from my recent NYC trip with @west_winds and somehow there’s no trivial CLI tool to batch web-optimize and resize images that allows you to say “make the bigger dimension X pixels wide and preserve the aspect ratio”? So now I’m gonna be writing something to detect landscape vs portrait orientation.

I swear I wrote this before in, like, 1998, how is this not a thing.

(Also how is ImageMagick still the best tool for this JFC…)

kcivey,
@kcivey@mastodon.social avatar

@genehack @west_winds Why doesn't ImageMagick count as trivial? Isn't it "convert old.jpg -resize 1024x1024 new.jpg" or something? It preserves the aspect ratio by default.

Journalism observers are saying NBC's craven hiring of Trump world apparatchik Ronna McDaniel "crossed a line" of some kind.

https://www.cjr.org/the_media_today/nbc_hire_ronna_mcdaniel_todd_welker.php

This is absurd. Big Journalism crossed the line in question long ago.

The only difference this time is that a few high-profile media personalities said something about it, publicly.

Even if/when she's kicked to the curb, there will be plenty of right-wing liars on network TV "news" and quoted incessantly in "news" coverage.

@dangillmor So a jury drawn entirely from the tiny fraction of the population that thinks a $500 fine for feeding the homeless is perfectly OK would be what they're calling an "unbiased" jury?
