This looks interesting:

Comics Are Dying: The Comic

For the better part of a century, people have said that comic books are dying. Crisis after crisis, the comic book industry has survived and lives to this day. So, to celebrate its harrowing journey into the 21st century, a satirical OGN about the history of comic books has taken shape. Introducing the ironically named Comics Are Dying: The Comic - a brief history and celebration of the comic book industry!

Interview with the writer who planned the book and teamed up with 100 artists:

You see, this whole project started because I am sick of pessimists, naysayers, whiners, bullies, and opportunists screaming from the heavens about how comics aren’t like they were when they were a kid. I see so many bigots and ignorant folk online complaining about diversity or inclusion and how they want comics to go back to the old days. I think that’s so stupid.

Comics are changing and they’ve always been changing. They’re art and no medium of art stays the same forever. Some of the stuff people complain about has been in comics for decades anyway, so it’s really just a “complaint of the week” for some people. Truly just a miserable lot of fandom. On a more positive note, I see and know the wonderful creatives working today and the heart and soul they put out into this work. But, the joy of it is that I’ve met so many people from all over the world living vastly different lifestyles, but they are unified in their love of this business we call home. It’s a great unifier and a source of creative community.

So, the only way to fight against those clambering for death is to live your passion and express your love on the page. That’s what this book is about. It’s a celebration of not only comics but the people who make them too.

Declaring this June 1 to be Jean Valjean Day, as it'll be 24-6-01

(Ok, it's reaching a bit, but it's the closest we'll get for a few centuries)

The Hot Cha Cafe at So Cal Landmarks:

In about 1932, a small, hexagonal shingle-style Victorian building in Long Beach got a programmatic makeover, adding a large, angular percolator made of metal and glass on the roof, to become the Hot Cha Café. The name changed to the Koffee Pot Café, but it remained a coffee shop into the 1960s...

If this was still a cafe I'd totally go there just for the style. I'm glad it was restored instead of demolished!

Hmmm.... wondering if it's possible to craft a custom endpoint that enables serving different users from different software on the same hostname.

Like having blog@example.com run on WordPress or WriteFreely, then linkblog@example.com run on Postmarks, then using something small like GoToSocial or Snac2 for person1@example.com and person2@example.com

Use something that's tailored for each use case, but not have to create a new subdomain for each piece of software.

(Makes note to read up on this stuff after post-work errands)

The latest storm was the third “thousand-year” event — one with a 0.1% likelihood of occurring in any given year — to hit Southern California this winter.

-- LA Times in an article on trying to balance flood control and stormwater capture.

The current flood control system managed to handle 60% of average LA's annual rainfall hitting in the space of three days. The current stormwater capture system can't: 80% of that water is heading straight to the ocean. Projects to improving it are in the works, but increasing that capture is only going to get more important.

Assuming they can be set up with no tracking* until someone actually clicks on the button....

What share buttons should be on a tech tips site?

*I wouldn't use the official buttons, I'd use something self-hosted that would open the relevant share page with the article title and link pre-filled.

It sure would be nice if would either keep the original names for their apps or rename them completely so I don't have to remember that "Web" is still packaged as "epiphany" and "Videos" is "totem"

Fossify has forked the entire suite of Simple Mobile Tools after the original was acquired by ZipoApps, known for acquiring existing apps and bloating them with ads, subscriptions, etc. (Their TrustPilot reviews are an interesting mix of 5-stars from devs who sold them their apps, and 1-stars from customers complaining about unauthorized charges.)

The forked apps are starting to make their way into F-Droid - so far the calendar, file manager and gallery.

Is there a more general term similar to for trying to reduce your dependency on the big 5 tech companies' online services? One that's short enough to use as a tag?

Like trying to get off of Gmail, Outlook, OneDrive, iCloud and Google Drive, staying off Facebook, getting ebooks somewhere other than Amazon, etc.

Oh cool! Humble Bundle featuring 21 books by @scalzi! DRM-free!

Announcing the John Scalzi Humble Book Bundle, Benefiting First Book

I have several of these already, but they're scattered across 3 different ebook stores (and therefore apps) and a couple of print editions. It'll be nice to be able to bring them up on any e-reader I want.

The charity this bundle contributes to is First Book, "which provides books to and champions literacy for children all around the United States."

Latest release candidate of @gotosocial finally adds federated ! This brings the number of missing "must-have" items on my wish list down to just one:

There are a few other things I'd like to have working before switching my primary Fediverse account from @KelsonV to a properly-set-up , but that's the only big one left.

  • Follow moving accounts to their new location. (This is another big one.)
  • Mark account as moved
  • Polls
  • Fix Federation with Takahē (not sure how much is on which side at this point). I need to check in on what @activitypubtestsuite has been doing!
  • Federation with Lemmy (but that's on Lemmy to implement signed fetches)
