We probably shouldn't have named them Remy and Emil. Pinky and The Brain would have been perfect if Emil had been the pinker of the two.... https://youtu.be/WcXzTlZ8iB4

Sunrise rainbow over the pasture. That's Pu'u 'Ōpae in the background; when it's lit up like that in the morning with no low clouds you know it's going to be a pretty excellent day.

It is essential to stop using Chrome.

Under the pretense of saving users from third-party spyware, Google is creating an ecosystem in which Chrome itself is the spyware.

Given Google's overwhelming presence in the browser market, this is unconscionable.

We should all despise the ad-tech business, and have no sympathy for the companies getting whacked by Google's actions. But we should not permit one monopolist to replace them all.

@dangillmor how do you feel about Chromium-based browsers like Arc? (Which is awesome, btw.)

Today I had a spectacular view of a 180 degree rainbow over Maeshowe, and also something I've never seen before: A reflection , where light has bounced off water (over the hill) before refracting in the atmosphere. Spent some time going "huh?" before finding a website that explained it.

I was also inside the tomb close enough to midwinter to see the sun shine along the entrance passage into the core - but while special, that was less exciting than the unusual rainbows!

Reflection rainbow: At the root of the main rainbow, another rainbow seems to fork off it at a different angle.

@swaldman you saw a baby rainbow being born! Outstanding!

A neighbor brought over some milo wood to play with; I roughed out a ladle and discovered a bunch of things in the not-quite-done / needs-attention pile that wanted a coat of Howard's butcher block conditioner.

Feeling very happy with the olive-wood spurtles; they are a great all-purpose tool in the kitchen and stand up well to re-finishing.

The eternal struggle: do I set up an auxiliary computer (server/testing machines) on this flat surface, or do I leave it open so my cats can sit there? 🤔

@Lironah last time I checked a cat could fit nicely on a Mac Mini....

Alex Cabal talks about keeping Standard Ebooks on the Classic Web:

"But while the company hosting our VPS is technically a cloud service—admittedly, our desire to be self-sufficient ends just before owning bare metal in a rented rack—we don’t rely on any other 3rd-party cloud service like AWS or Azure.

Part of the reason is because just glancing at the dizzying list of AWS acronyms and initialisms makes me light-headed and woozy."

Alex also has a great solution for social media overload:

"Email me at: my short first name (four letters) at this domain. Email is the best way to contact me.

While you can also find me at Hacker News, GitHub, and Scribophile, please don’t contact me via social media—I won’t see your message and you won’t get a reply. Email me instead."

One more wonderful thing about Standard Ebooks and I'll shut up: if you find a typo, you can fix it yourself and submit a pull request!

Has it held up?

kentbrew,

@forrestbrazeal it has, yes. LLM code assistants are also super fun if you're working with a feature (like offscreen pages in browser extensions that require background processing be done in a service worker) that did not exist in 2021.
