@toor literally came here to say this and your toot is at the top of my feed.

If you or anyone else within the sound of my voice is anxious to stay on the right side of the paywall, whatever you do, do NOT open archive.ph and paste in the URL to a paywalled article.

The Great COVID Cover-up: He fired our pandemic response team, went golfing, called it a hoax, went golfing, bragged 15 cases would soon be down to zero, and went golfing. — Let’s face it: Trump was directly responsible for our skyrocketing death rate. He’s a mass murderer.

Yeah, this totally tracks:

"Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped."

I'm giving Mastodon a shot again, but with different goals than last time, so I suppose another post is in order?

I am many things, but typically, I am a bumbling husband, awkward father, recovering alcoholic, ageing computer enthusiast, generalized anxiety disorderer, wannabe smol web developer, science fiction fan, D&D play-by-poster, repair tech, patch collector and worker rights advocate.

I want to change careers with the hope of eventually doing the digital nomad thing.

@tinsmith Welcome back! 🥳 Mastodon didn't work for me the first time either. What helped: be generous with follows, hashtags, and image descriptions.

Long shot, does anyone reading this work at Pinterest? I'd like to reach someone on the engineering team there (or, anyone that can help me resolve an issue that appears to be related to Pinterest's CDN). It is a repeatable issue that we've been investigating for several days with several customers. Boosts appreciated or direct DM to the right person. Thank you!

What if mass shootings were reported the way vehicular manslaughter is reported?

Headline: 13 People Dead and 4 Injured After They Collided With Bullets.

Story: According to police 13 people died and 4 were taken to the hospital after they collided with bullets at a café on Main Street.

A 22 year old male was walking past the café and his gun began to fire bullets at the café. Several bullets hit the café damaging a coffee machine before more bullets hit some of the diners in the café. According to the police, none of the diners were wearing bulletproof vests or military body armor when they ran into the bullets.
Of the 13 dead, 9 died at the scene and 4 died later at the hospital. The 4 injured diners were treated for non-fatal wounds and released from the hospital.
The 22 year old male gun owner is uninjured and returned to his home very shaken by the incident.

kentbrew,
@kentbrew@xoxo.zone avatar

@KawaTora I'd say this needs more passive voice. Make it sound more like a police report: "The cafe was hit by several bullets, damaging a coffee machine, before some of the diners were hit by more bullets." Nobody, not even the bullets, take any action at all. "Nine people were declared dead at the scene; four people were later declared dead at the hospital."

Now slowly grinding through Login Hell on a new Roku Express. X streaming services times Y different login UIs times Z different hard-to-guess passwords equals SO MUCH SWEARING.

Why can't I just go to a big login portal on my laptop and do them all at once? How has the state of this art not advanced one tiny bit since we were building login for PS3 at Netflix in 2009?

kentbrew,
@kentbrew@xoxo.zone avatar

(I know, the answer to the first question is "because Disney/Apple/Netflix doesn't WANT to make this easy for you, dummy.")

@jackwilliambell suggestions welcome! I'm thinking some kind of robot hand/camera combo that actually uses the remote control and TV set to physically sign in to everything.

@keithmann @pluralistic please fix the Archimedes quote 30% in. “You know the saying ‘Give me a lever long enough and a lever on which to place it, and I shall move the world’?” Second instance of "lever" should be "fulcrum."

New Shōgun is pretty sweet, but if you are the kind of person who absorbs TV while multitasking on your phone you're going to want to put it down and just watch. (Unless of course you understand Japanese.)

Careful, now: Turbify (formerly Verizon, formerly Yahoo Small Business, formerly Yahoo! Domains) will sneakily add a $25/year "web hosting" subscription to all those old domains you're not really paying attention to any longer, and until you actually get through to phone support you will get an error when you click Change Plan to remove it.

kentbrew,
@kentbrew@xoxo.zone avatar

@deirdresm yeah what's weird here is I just looked through all the domains I transferred out of Turbify and into Google Domains (now Squarespace) and there were at least three that said they were going to renew for $45/year in the future. Cancelled everything; will check back to see what happened.

A different perspective for those folks who are having trouble seeing women's point of view.

kentbrew,
@kentbrew@xoxo.zone avatar

@isotope239 I've had good luck with the Kidney Stone Example:

"Sir, have you ever had a kidney stone?"
"Yeah, that sucked."
"Okay, imagine this: the government is taken over by a cult that believes that kidney stones formed by men contain messages from God, so doing anything at all that might interfere with the stone's natural progression from kidney to bladder and then all the way out your tiny little peehole in one piece is now punishable by jail time."

kentbrew, (edited )
@kentbrew@xoxo.zone avatar

@isotope239

"Oh, but that's not all. Entire classes of medical treatment such as kidney transplants or ultrasound imaging are now forbidden to men, because they might interfere with stone formation. All remedies for pain or inflammation are forbidden to men, same reason. Urologists are nearly impossible to find; showing up at an urgent care clinic with UTI or prostate symptoms will get you sent home with instructions to drink more water and try to breathe through the pain."
