Yesterday I found myself weirdly missing an abusive ex that I hadn't thought of in years. I wanted to reach out, feeling like only they truly understood how satisfying the verdict felt for me

Today I realize it's because the relief that comes with "justice" is part of the abuse cycle, and my body was feeling the familiar chemical release (adrenaline, cortisol, dopamine) that one experiences regularly in such relationships

If this is you, too, please know that I see you and we deserve better

Nikki Haley literally autographing artillery shells in Israel

Whatever one's feelings about what's happening over there, and however much one can rationalize away the "unfortunate reality of collateral damage," the sheer bloodthirst on display here should make anyone ill

A closeup of what Nikki Haley wrote on one of the missiles: FINISH THEM! AMERICAN ISRAEL ALWAYS Nikki Haley

I am convinced that the effective altruists are a more dangerous cult than the fundies. These poor kids...

"The Collinses are atheists; they believe in science and data, studies and research. Their pronatalism is born from the hyper-rational effective altruism movement [...] which uses utilitarian principles and cool-headed logic to determine what is best for life on Earth."

And this is their cool-headed science" to justify hitting a 2-yr-old across the face

One life lesson that has taken me far too long to learn:

The first time someone makes you think, “Remind me never to get on your bad side”?

That’s also the moment you should have zero interest in being on their good side

The best thing is to remove yourself from their orbit, as quickly and inconspicuously as possible

HERE'S the endorsement every politician has been vying for! I'll bet Gaetz is heartbroken he couldn't land this one

Kevin Spacey endorses Bobby Kennedy:

There’s a lot I can learn from this man. When the world turned its back on me, Bobby leaned in. 🙏🏼

He’s a formidable fighter for justice and a loyal friend that’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes.

Archdiocese of New Orleans Suspected of Child Sex Trafficking, Warrant Shows

One document cited in the affidavit states that one specific archbishop 'was aware of rampant sexual abuse throughout the archdiocese.' but the affidavit leaves out the archbishop’s name.

Chaser:
As of March 22, Priests in Louisiana can't be sued for abuse

That's some timing!

Everything feels so hopeless these days. Today I signed up to be a poll observer for the June primaries here in NV

It doesn't feel like much, but at least it's something

What's everyone else doing for self-care these days? I'm open to any and all suggestions

Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 how the polls are even close, never mind that he might win? This is a genuine question

  • deport 11m people
  • build migrant detention camps, deploy military at border and inland
  • let red states monitor pregnancies and prosecute those who violate abortion bans
  • at his personal discretion, withhold funds appropriated by Congress
  • fire a U.S. Attorney who doesn’t carry out his order to prosecute someone
  • render NATO meaningless

Appt is 9:45

By 9:50 you're in the exam room, vitals taken

"Doctor will be in shortly"

At 10:20 nurse returns, asks at which hospital you had your broncoscopy done

"You mean the procedure I had two months ago, before my previous appt here? I haven't had any procedures since you last saw me."

"Huh. Really? Okay, doctor will be in soon."

It's 10:45, doctor still has not come in to see you

Do you stay?

Hey @pluralistic ?

Any idea why iMessage has suddenly decided that your name requires a diacritic?

It's in the reply texts as well, so it isn't just me

further texts that read: Friend: That's tremendous Me: The cartoon or Cory? Friend: Cory the o's in Cory's name also contain the diacritic

I just left an estate planning meeting and, dear god, if most people knew how easy (and legal) it is for rich people to essentially pay no taxes, there’d be riots every day

I literally had to step out into the parking lot and take a bunch of deep breaths when she described “crummy trusts”

Also, lawyers look at you funny when you say you want to obey the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law

The end of late stage capitalism can’t come soon enough

Four years ago today, the Las Vegas Strip goes dark for the first time since the Kennedy assassination

Watching the lights go off from our balcony was a rather surreal experience and I regret that I was too in shock to film it. This photo is from a news org

There is a story that a bar that had been ordered to close here in LV was unable to do so because, ever since it had opened 30 years prior, the doors had never been locked and no one had any idea where the keys were

Coffee machine camera at Amazon warehouse raises concerns about surveillance in the workplace

A worker accidentally discovered that a touchscreen on a coffee vending machine had taken photos of the breakroom.

"Amazon spokesperson Alisa Carroll said a malfunction caused the camera to take photos. [...] But Carroll added that Amazon offers the coffee to employees free of charge and has no practical use for the camera. The cameras cannot capture audio, she added."

A Covid question for those who still take precautions:

I tested super positive Wednesday morning (Test line was dark before the Control line appeared) and am still infected

Spouse tested negative Wed/Thurs/Fri and finally has a faint positive Test line this morning

I'd been isolating in a separate part of the house. Do we need to continue doing this?

(I almost certainly caught it during an unavoidable hospital procedure 9 days ago)

I'm on the left...

It is frustrating to have super embarrassing information about a truly awful person, while simultaneously having too much integrity to make that info publicly known

It almost feels like integrity is being leveraged against me

[To be clear, this isn't about unlawful behavior or continuing abusive behavior. I'd go public about that stuff immediately. But it is really embarrassing, and bog knows this guy deserves it.]

On vacation with my kid, my brother, and his kids. My kid and I did the grocery shopping, they unloaded the car and put stuff away

We can quibble over whether onions or clementines belong in the fridge, but what kind of sociopath puts an opened stick of butter in there?

[To be clear, it was opened during the tasting portion of 'putting groceries away']

What is the next line in this song?

She'll only come out at night
The lean and hungry type
Nothing is new
I've seen her here before

Watching and waiting
Ooh, she's sitting with you
But her eyes are on the door

So many have paid to see
What you think you're getting for free
The woman is wild

A friend is having surgery at Cleveland Clinic to treat his cancer

He recently transferred to CC from MD Anderson. When I visited MDA for ten days back in July, they would not let anyone in the bldg without a mask — not staff, not patients, not visitors — even back then when Covid numbers were reasonably low and it wasn't RSV season. That policy remains in place

At Cleveland Clinic in December where they're doing incredibly invasive surgery on cancer patients? Masks are optional

To put the Hunter Biden prosecution into perspective...

How many arrests were made here? Much like the Jeffrey Epstein case, the bank paid the fine and the tax evading criminals walk free

"Swiss private bank Banque Pictet has admitted to helping U.S. taxpayers hide more than $5.6 billion from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and has entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the Justice Department, federal prosecutors said on Monday."
