Ex-Wall St, ex-NYT, ex-dotcom stuff.

"Elon Musk used to be so smart? What happened to him?"

"I used to love Bill Maher but lately he's so insufferable"

"I admired Rudy Giuliani, now he's nothing but a racist alcoholic"

"How did these men change so much?"

They haven't. They've always been terrible. A columnist in 2016 compared Musk to Trump. Maher's been contemptuous of his audience since PI. Giuliani was a race baiter while running for mayor

They haven't changed. You have. We have. And it's about time we see them clearly

I think if Bluesky had launched in November, I would have been curious. But I've been here for 5 months now and there's been a noticeable change in my physical well-being, including a drop in blood pressure.

The idea of a recreated twitter experience (with all the drama and mess) holds much less appeal for me now that my body's self-regulation is more stable.

May a thousand platforms bloom or whatever, I just hope there isn't a mass migration away from here. I'd be sad to lose this place.

Nikki Haley literally autographing artillery shells in Israel

Whatever one's feelings about what's happening over there, and however much one can rationalize away the "unfortunate reality of collateral damage," the sheer bloodthirst on display here should make anyone ill

A closeup of what Nikki Haley wrote on one of the missiles: FINISH THEM! AMERICAN ISRAEL ALWAYS Nikki Haley

Amazing. Rep Jared Golden of Maine does something politicians rarely do. He says clearly and unequivocally that he's been wrong about not banning assault weapons and is hereby reversing his position.

"I now call on United States congress to ban assault weapons ... For the good of my community I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time I have left in congress. To the people of Lewiston [...] I ask for forgiveness and support as I seek to put an end to these terrible shootings"

I have seen a lot of optical illusions. I have a reasonable layman's understanding of how they work

I have stared at this for five full minutes trying to get it NOT to flip every 10-15 seconds and I cannot keep it from doing so

[Also, I have no idea how to write alt text for this]

New dress controversy. Is the water blue or gold?

Not photoshop. Not AI.

https://mymodernmet.com/kenichi-ohno-bird-photo-illusion/

"So what is happening behind the egret that is causing the illusion? In the upper right-hand corner, there is a cream-colored wall. What we see below the wall is its reflection in the water and the position of the photographer has allowed for a perfectly straight “cut” in the composition, so one side is all water and the other side is the wall and its reflection."

I just left an estate planning meeting and, dear god, if most people knew how easy (and legal) it is for rich people to essentially pay no taxes, there’d be riots every day

I literally had to step out into the parking lot and take a bunch of deep breaths when she described “crummy trusts”

Also, lawyers look at you funny when you say you want to obey the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law

The end of late stage capitalism can’t come soon enough

"An informal search of the Substack website and of extremist Telegram channels that circulate Substack posts turns up scores of white-supremacist, neo-Confederate, and explicitly Nazi newsletters on Substack—many of them apparently started in the past year. [...]
At least 16 of the newsletters that I reviewed have overt Nazi symbols, including the swastika and the sonnenrad, in their logos or in prominent graphics."

As if there weren't enough other reasons not to use SS

One life lesson that has taken me far too long to learn:

The first time someone makes you think, “Remind me never to get on your bad side”?

That’s also the moment you should have zero interest in being on their good side

The best thing is to remove yourself from their orbit, as quickly and inconspicuously as possible

They finally got me to cancel my subscription

Which one should they help elect? The one that asked SCOTUS to overturn the election? The one that's trying to impeach Biden? The one that thinks the guy under eleventy-seven indictments is the best person to lead the country?

I was looking to see which asshat wrote this, but it's the entire Editorial Board. Un-fucking-believable

I read an essay on FB about Gaza, written by a woman who lives in Tel Aviv, that captures the helplessness many of us are feeling. Two lines stopped me cold:

"Netanyahu raised Hamas much as one would raise a Pitbull for dogfights, keeping it just healthy enough to stay alive, just angry enough to preserve the killer instinct."

"I would walk away from Omelas, but where to?"

It's publicly readable and has been shared more than 500 times. Long but well worth the time

Why is it when (white, natch) Americans or Europeans look for food sources after a natural catastrophe it's scavenging, but when Palestinians do it it's looting?

And why is 'desperate' in quotes?

Given that aid organizations talk about how difficult it is to get aid meant for innocent civilians past [Hamas/Israeli forces, depending upon one's politics], isn't this a desirable outcome?

So given that Elon went full nazi after the market close, I wonder...

Will all the hedge fund managers who demanded that their alma maters doxx the students who signed ant-iIsrael protest letters (to ensure they couldn't get hired anywhere) ASLO be selling their TSLA stock at the open tomorrow?

Or is what's in their portfolios not subject to the same rigorous ethical and moral standards as their hiring practices?

Archdiocese of New Orleans Suspected of Child Sex Trafficking, Warrant Shows

One document cited in the affidavit states that one specific archbishop 'was aware of rampant sexual abuse throughout the archdiocese.' but the affidavit leaves out the archbishop’s name.

Chaser:
As of March 22, Priests in Louisiana can't be sued for abuse

That's some timing!

I will pay cash money to any reporter who asks Kevin McCarthy,

"Which six Republicans should end the gridlock by supporting Jeffries, the candidate who has consistently garnered the highest number of votes?"

And when he scoffs at the very idea that republicans should support a democrat, the followup question writes itself

Microsoft owes $29 billion in back taxes for years 2004-2013, says IRS / Microsoft says it will ‘vigorously contest’ the numbers the IRS is presenting.

I wonder if all the executives who collected bonuses based on falsified profits, and the investors who reaped hundreds of millions in stock appreciation based on same, will have to give up their unearned winnings, too

Until we create and enforce penalties with teeth that punish actual people, this will forever continue

Two things can be simultaneously true

  1. Menendez's own party will force his resignation

  2. You could produce videotape of Clarence Thomas having sex with someone who appeared before the court both before and after he ruled in their favor, and no measures will be taken to remove him from the bench

Why are so many people pretending not to know this?

I enjoy traveling to LA for Halloween because when it comes to over-the-top decorations, few neighborhoods can compete with the special effects artists that live there

Props to the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas for setting a new bar so early in the season
